& yeah i do think that triple grocery bagging is novel in a way that transcends the second grade-level construction of your typical grocery bagging into something that's like borderline impressionist

Oh god, all the sudden I feel 90 years old.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:29 (fifteen years ago)
imo grocery bag isnt an inherently bad technique, every rapper slips them in, its the idea that an entire rapper's career can ride that gimmick that makes it unbearable (im starting to wish Drake would stick w/ that instead of the postmodern 'slow burners' hes been into since ... SQUARE ROOT OF BLOWJOBS

lol JF http://www.facebook.com/pages/If-you-lovedknew-Eminem-before-not-afraid-or-love-the-way-you-lie/153893614638489
nicki on that song doesn't remind me as much of drake anymore as like something in the spirit of the most obtuse mystikal flows or something
― wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:30 (fifteen years ago)
yeah - stacking mumbling/cackling/panicking on top of each other like that gives it a real lunatic asylum feel, then shunting the action so unexpectedly into religious territory with overseas/church/vatican lends it an extra sinister edge - like nicki's playing the demons in her foes' heads

dude eminem broke when i was 12 -- who the fuck you think was buying his shit?
― wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:31 (fifteen years ago)
tho i'll admit to being ignorant of moby circa "without me" outside of his mtv cribs
eminem has seemed p corny to me since white america

xp lol used to sing that song when I worked in a deli slicing white American cheese
― some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:32 (fifteen years ago)
well i don't agree w/ that at all
it's an inherently shitty technique

eminem needs to become dreaminem
― I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:34 (fifteen years ago)
there's a Recoil track from 1992 that has Moby rapping on it
it is more listenable than a lot of stuff on this poll so far.

ryan leslie is a perfect example of someone who makes a grocery bag punchline work 4 him
― challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:35 (fifteen years ago)
i'd say that grocery bagging works one out of every ten times (being generous here) & doing anything correctly 10% of the time is inherently shitty & would get you fired from every job (aka gudda gudda you are the weakest link goodbye)
― wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:36 (fifteen years ago)
eminem's verse is terrible & he sounds like a creep on that track
its not his 'technique' that is at issue whiney. if it were, then his most recent album would be aoty quality

deej otm here. of course em's shit is clever and insanely tight, because he's always been great that way. but the tone and persona are unpleasant, and his style fucks the track up wr2 what i actually like about it (i.e., nicki, whose shit is head-spinning even if it does lean on punchlines). there's a difference between appreciating someone's rapping skills and appreciating their contribution to a piece of music in other respects. with em, i do the former here, not so much the latter.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:39 (fifteen years ago)
i also find his voice really harsh and unpleasant to listen to
― plax (ico), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:40 (fifteen years ago)
that angry rasp on his voice is just unpleasant, minaj sounds like shes having fun ... dont get me wrong, i totally prefer em's rhyme construction but he & her are tonedeaf matches
― challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:41 (fifteen years ago)
How is Eminem on Roman's Revenge creepy and unpleasant and sexist and terrible but ILX is bending over backwards for fucking Earl Sweatshirt
― when the president talks to based god (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:41 (fifteen years ago)
that rhetorical trick is what i like to call a classic whiney
earl sweatshirt is making a song where 'creepy' is the point
― challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:42 (fifteen years ago)
plus earl sounds good. pop is mostly about that.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:44 (fifteen years ago)
i mean, like old eminem, earl usually sounds like he's having fun
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:45 (fifteen years ago)
Eminem is great on Roman's Revenge. He's unpleasant and creepy on his latest album, trying to be sincere and emotional.

I HEAR THE MUMBLIN / I HEAR THE CACKLINI GOT EM SCARED / SHOOK / PANICKINOVERSEAS / CHURCH / VATICAN
It took Lex helpfully writing it out in full upthread for me to get that Nicki is saying her enemies need to seek sanctuary from her. How did I miss this before.

filling space =/= genius
― challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:50 (fifteen years ago)
Actually that makes even more sense.
I always thought the line was kinda random.
I'm so dumb.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:50 (fifteen years ago)
difference is in tone, whiney...the tone in eminem's raps these days are pretty much desperately, hysterically overbearing...directly opposed to E. Sweatshirt's tone which has a youthful, boastful, almost lighthearted quality that amps up the giddiness of his complicated flows and adds an extra frisson to his creepy subject matter...

― when the president talks to based god (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:51 (fifteen years ago)
Em's new shit sounds to me like he really fucked up how his brain works with all those drugs -- the "technique" is there in some sense with all the internal rhymes, but he's lost all sense of how people talk or how natural and relaxed he used to sound on record, he's just this constant hectoring, repetitive irritant.
― trv kvnt (some dude), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:55 (fifteen years ago)
yeah thats a good point too
― challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 22:56 (fifteen years ago)
^yeah, in some ways, it's almost punk rock
in other ways, it definitely makes you an unwelcome addition to any random Nicki Minaj song

I like the album because it reminds me of late 80s New Order and Pet Shop Boys, it's got their best songwriting, it's got an emotional warmth they've rarely achieved before,
― I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (Dorianlynskey)
I completely agree with this, I really think they have it in them to make an album as good as Very of technique. The latest album was the sound of them becoming a really great band.
Can i also just add I had never heard of Javiera Mena before this list but I have fallen in love with that song, that would have easily made my list if I'd heard it before. I'm really excited about hearing her album now.

this. almost hate to see it put so bluntly, but yeah. i may be in the minority in agreeing with this, cuz sure, he's still making hits, but i haven't liked anything i've heard lately, off remedy or elsewhere. and i used to be a fan.

― when the president talks to based god (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 23:08 (fifteen years ago)
thing about eminem is that his style was really well suited to his youth and the exuberant giddiness of his persona back in the day. he rapped like kids think, like a goofy kid brother all gooned out on froot loops. the same style doesn't suit the angry, bitter-seeming man he's become. like what if weird all had turned into a rage-venting ex-junkie with a massive chip on his shoulder? would anyone want to hear his wacky pop send-ups?
