afaik, this is the first time I've ever heard anything by Jaar. This is kinda nice, but it leaves me unsatisfied. I need more buildup/payoff.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for this, such a lovely vibe...I have a nagging feeling with Jaar that his early work (i.e. this) might turn out to be the pinnacle of his output.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

i now have 2 votes placing. For a while I thought the only one that would make it was the bieber, lol

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

I do like the gearshift right around the 5min mark, tho

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

i like the janelle monae record but it seems like some of the styles she's mining on it (broadway music, 60s psych/folk) are ones that are not at all in vogue right now (or ever?) so its not surprising that it fell by the wayside commercially

ciderpress, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

i thought you said you voted for swans, AG...?

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

Naw i checked and i only voted swans on albums ballot

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

I do like the gearshift right around the 5min mark, tho

I think that's the payoff, the point of all that repeition in the first place, to then hit you with the chord change after you've zoned out for ages.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ LJ referring to Lady Antebellum as "her."

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

this is awesome! list got goooooood

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

44. CARIBOU "Odessa" [278 points, 11 votes]
Youtube

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:25 (fifteen years ago)

Not the Caribou track I voted for, but I love love love this!

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, been wanting to listen to some Jaar for a while. This is nice, but I feel like it's either a) too subtle for listening to on only one working headphone from a youtube, or b) a tad inconsequential.

emil.y, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

i think one of my favourite things about "back to december" is how it demonstrates that, for all taylor swift always gets pinned with the fairytale-happy-endings tag, she also believes in unhappy endings and the futility of emotion.

― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:08 (15 minutes ago)

I'm not sure it's my favourite song on the record but it's probably the most moving. I can't recall her ever coming forward and saying that she was entirely responsible for a relationship dissolving before - that she's not always the victim of terrible boys and that she fucks up like everyone else. The line "if we loved again, i swear i'd love you more" is a killer.

ShariVari, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

Love the drum sounds on "Odessa"

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

46-45-44 a very nice run

skip, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

This was the track that led me to checking out the Caribou album. Still think this is the best thing on it.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

Thinking about it, I'm not sure why anyone would choose "Wouh" over "Love Cry". Love them both though.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

Love the drum sounds on "Odessa"

― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:26 (45 seconds ago)

THIS, that break is what made me vote for this song, been stuck in my mind all year <3

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

the youtube for back to december itt is 4:28, should be 4:55

so it's not a USMILEAMBIENT level timestretch but yeah you need to year the proper versh

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

wrt Jaar: i find it hard to get sick of pared down piano sounds, i feel like his rhythms feel really like things you do with your body when you dance. as in they're *organic* but i dont necessarily mean that in a *sound pallette* way. I definitely like him more at his more ambient and spacey, devotional vocals (john the revelator, love you gotta lose again) eyes wide turned to heaven ecstatic. the way his lulls you with his grooves, spaces you out, tangles up your limbs dancing.

plax (ico), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

basically the drum-break in Odessa is one of the best uses of syncopation I've heard in ages. LOVE IT :D

awesome run

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

Dan S, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

LJ you should go see Caribou live, he absolutely slays.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

Actually you all should.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

I have. It was okay.

emil.y, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I've heard! especially with the drumming. caribou has always been about the drums, dude's IDM masquerading as indie house hehe

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)

dude's IDM masquerading as indie house

handy little explanation of why i've never been able to get into caribou

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

btw taylor swift isn't pure thomas kinkade in retrospect, fleet foxes are (as I believe I said once)

aw lex :( chacun a son gout

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

nicholas jaar track is gorgeous, so easy to get lost in

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

nico jaar is ethiopian liturgical hardcore masquerading as lynchian diva house

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

Odessa video is cool too...

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

plz keep this run up, ILM

o nakh

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

also Odessa is the best song on the album IMO, Jamelia is the only other contender

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

taylor swift isn't pure thomas kinkade in retrospect, fleet foxes are

no. fleet foxes are whatever the indie-parent version of thomas kinkade is (i wouldn't know). that taylor track just IS kinkade, nothing but kinkade. she is painter of light.

43. EL GUINCHO "Bombay" [280 points, 11 votes]
Youtube

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

Probably not a good idea to peep this video on a work computer.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I voted for this, sexist video tropes and all.

emil.y, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ this getting votes purely on the video

challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

Love that song, but that's the least intriguing screencap of the video.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

on shitty mobile broadband now so can't really listen to youtubes but really want to hear that nico jaar. i voted for 'back to decemeber' - my favourite song from the album. still holding out hope that the remix of that drake song that i voted for places.

whitney from mtv's the city (tpp), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

Only heard the whole album once, though, so he missed my albums ballot.

xpost to self, I guess

emil.y, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

you're right contendo, just that fleet foxes are quite a good fit too :)

bombay is quite banging, has amazing if derivative video, officially not misogynist, cool stuff

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ this getting votes purely on the video

I didn't factor the video into my vote, but I also probably wouldn't have heard the song if not for the thread on the video.

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:36 (fifteen years ago)
