Hey, the pitch of the youtube you linked to for Back to December is wrong / too high

abcfsk, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

think i have heard two entries (swans/lcd) so far itt cuz 2k10 was all about spacemen 3, 'viva', digital noise, palestrina, russian liturgical music & eldritch hardcore continuum derivations ime :x

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

There's probably a fair bit of Big Boi to come.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's 2 high, i searched for the video instead. it has lots of snow.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

46. JANELLE MONÁE "Cold War" [272 points, 11 votes, 1 first place vote]
Youtube

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for the APHG track - I missed the old drowned production from his earlier stuff on this album but think he really hits a good pop vein at times. I didn't know the original before the album came out, so it didn't suffer so much from whether he made it his own or not.

emil.y, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

and them yeah xxp, kinda edging into diginoise territory tho!

lj is making taylor swift sound interesting

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

spacemen 3, 'viva', digital noise, palestrina, russian liturgical music & eldritch hardcore continuum derivations ime :x

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

Hey nakh - you noticed that Bieber placed, right?

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

Cold War is my favourite Janelle song, she's pretty good at rock music.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

haha i missed that xp! awes

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

Have tried to get into Janelle Monae but for all the crazy outer-space hype it just sounds very ordinary to my ears. Might still try again with it, though.

emil.y, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

not one of the better tracks from archandroid, she has a great face though, i could have it blown up huge to fill my living room wall.

ogmor, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

was gonna say xp to seandalai

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

loving this

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

i think one of my favourite things about "back to december" is how it demonstrates that, for all taylor swift always gets pinned with the fairytale-happy-endings tag, she also believes in unhappy endings and the futility of emotion.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah her album is basically a broadway take on retro rock'n'roll. really not that crazy.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

haven't heard anything from Janelle yet...this does hit all the "Hey Ya"/Gnarls buttons, so I can imagine why people would not like this...

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

this is the best song since bieberslow by a fucking mile

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

surprised at taylor swift's voice.....expected something more effusive kinda

she sounds like a shrewish 15 yr old rather than a platinum diva

song is kinda gloopy but nice enough

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

Prefer "Tightrope", "Wondaland" and whatever the Of Montreal collaboration is called to "Cold War".

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)

nakh if you're listening to the linked youtube, it's been pitched up, so that's not really t-swift's voice

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

...and it's STILL nothing truly special, but can get w/ it, may even grow on me

loved tightrope

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

I thought Swift sounded very sweet-natured in the verses, is that just bcz it was sped up?

omg the ending is noizzzzze :D

i totally buy the hro line on janelle monae:

"why do ppl keep trying to hype her? Seems like a failed mnstrm artist 2 me who has to settle 4 'blog buzz'"

45. NICOLAS JAAR "WOUH" [274 points, 8 votes, 1 first place vote]
Youtube

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

Oh wow! That's my favourite Nicholas Jaar as well, usually I find his music a bit dry but those chords are so lush.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

"blogs" have much lower standards than your avg mnstrmr probably tho xp

"many moons" still easily janelle's best song

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

nico jaar!!!! i thought he'd suffer from vote-splitting. i voted for "a time for us" but really good to see "wouh" in here.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

prefer time for us but still, awesome

just sayin, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

hah! my number one!

plax (ico), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

YES Jaar, voted for that one. Sounds like a subway train rattling through NYC, creepy and cold but kind of life affirming track.

skip, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

@Cpapa18 shut the fuck up you moron ! why do you want to destroy a beautiful song like this ? eminem and kid cudi or the worst rappers ever man, go listen to some real hip hop like wu tang clan, a tribe called quest, pharcyde, fugees etc. but not kid fuckin cudi !

man this is the shittiest comment i've ever read, go kill yourself

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

afaik, this is the first time I've ever heard anything by Jaar. This is kinda nice, but it leaves me unsatisfied. I need more buildup/payoff.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for this, such a lovely vibe...I have a nagging feeling with Jaar that his early work (i.e. this) might turn out to be the pinnacle of his output.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

i now have 2 votes placing. For a while I thought the only one that would make it was the bieber, lol

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

I do like the gearshift right around the 5min mark, tho

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

i like the janelle monae record but it seems like some of the styles she's mining on it (broadway music, 60s psych/folk) are ones that are not at all in vogue right now (or ever?) so its not surprising that it fell by the wayside commercially

ciderpress, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

i thought you said you voted for swans, AG...?

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

Naw i checked and i only voted swans on albums ballot

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

I do like the gearshift right around the 5min mark, tho

I think that's the payoff, the point of all that repeition in the first place, to then hit you with the chord change after you've zoned out for ages.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ LJ referring to Lady Antebellum as "her."

Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

this is awesome! list got goooooood
