Ariel Pink goes a lot of different directions, though, where Bethany has on blinders. xps

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

love that ariel pink song

challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

lex otm^

the punchiness of BLBS sounds great after all of the indie & mainstream excess of that last few entries. A dollop of Cliff Richard is fine by me!

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

From Lex's rant I'd expected Gayngs to sound a lot more like, say, the Dirty Projectors but this is just like really bland trip-hop with some soft rock leanings. Do not want.

The Beach House album got pretty boring pretty quickly but Zebra is sublime, wish they could have kept up that level of quality over an album. Otherwise, this is a pretty dire stretch we're in.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

so nice of ariel pink to counter indie excess

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

gave that ariel pink song 5/10 when i reviewed it. i remember it had one nice surf guitar line and was otherwise entirely forgettable. not as bad as gayngs tho.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this is much better than most of the other stuff recently, but it isn't as breezy and summery as it wants to be, and in the end isn't my thing either. just a bit dull.

this kind of thing is total quiet storm radio fodder & i could see it fitting in pretty easily on V103 here. but then theyve always played, like, loggins & messina too so

lol, right? i think that's what we call 'irony'

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

i prefer "round and round" and "can't hear my eyes" to this ariel pink tune, but dut dig the elpee in general.

but shit, cat, how much of this was there this year? indie bands reviewing smoothed-out 80s pop sounds through a gauzy (but pointedly not "lo fi") filter, i mean. there was gayngs, ariel p, twin shadow... who else?

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:50 (fifteen years ago)

"dug"

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:50 (fifteen years ago)

this kind of thing is total quiet storm radio fodder

except with fkn awful straining, strangulated vocals and completely inadequate songcraft, neither of which are problems traditionally associated w/quiet storm

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:50 (fifteen years ago)

you're supposed to *vibe out* to it

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

Well into day two and Diddy still surprisingly leading my favorites thus far.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

2010 was a great year for dream pop

i will admit A Pink song seems like '10's Lust for Life

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

Nonsense, Lust For Life has dynamics and build and power and momentum and force and actually feels like ROCK MUSIC whereas the Ariel Pink song is just limp and feels over-studied.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

Also Iggy has personality and charisma in abudance which isn't something you can say about most of yer Pitchfork faves.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

twin shadow's just reviving a strain of post punk tho imo? maybe an unexplored one but def less outside-trad-indie than the others

challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

Girls' Lust for Life...I wz making the this-year/last-year traxx countdown comparison...

Sorry for not being clear.

Youtube

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

I realised that immediately after posting it. I'd forgotten that Girls song. existed. In which case Ariel Pink sounds like a Donington monster of rock in comparison.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

I blame m83.

gorgeous track, so glad it made top 50

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:56 (fifteen years ago)

idg whats not rocking about that, its a punk-ish cover of a 60s rock track, fun jam

challopian youtubes (deej), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:56 (fifteen years ago)

the ariel pink is great, only my second pick to place though, i thought i'd have way more in here. does being able to fit something into a trend devalue it? does avoiding matt dc's nightmare beavis&butthead conception of ROCK MUSIC make it a success?

ogmor, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

so what is every taylor swift album track going to place?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

"Mine" is the best of the Taylor Swift showings imo

This and "Mean" are just kinda meh

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

YES taylor - this is my favourite song on the album, i think! it ~moves~ me so much. the way she switches between "i go back to december all the time" and "i'd go back to december all the time" slays me.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

haw, taylor swift is this year's fever ray

'bright lit blue skies' is good but i feel like ariel pink didn't really make it his own, his take sounds pretty much the same as the original in mood/arrangement. i mean, it fits in with his aesthetic but i think he could have done SOMETHING novel with it. still like it tho

ciderpress, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

ariel pink's 'house arrest' is one of the best albums of the 00s and obv he is responsible for the superb 'trepanated earth' but i haven't felt compelled to find the new stuff

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

even though this is pure thomas kinkade it's possibly better than the other two TS trax? such utter saccharine tosh but can imagine it over the end credits of a movie that is only 60% shit

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

I do think that Taylor, at her best, has an uncanny pathos that is not easily explained, sort of operating on the 'more-than-the-sum-of-its-parts" level

Hey, the pitch of the youtube you linked to for Back to December is wrong / too high

abcfsk, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

think i have heard two entries (swans/lcd) so far itt cuz 2k10 was all about spacemen 3, 'viva', digital noise, palestrina, russian liturgical music & eldritch hardcore continuum derivations ime :x

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

There's probably a fair bit of Big Boi to come.

Youtube

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for the APHG track - I missed the old drowned production from his earlier stuff on this album but think he really hits a good pop vein at times. I didn't know the original before the album came out, so it didn't suffer so much from whether he made it his own or not.
