There are a few nice sounds in the Gayngs track but my problem with a lot of this stuff (including Games) is that they're paying tribute to a lot of the '80s ethos that I hate, so even though they're playing with it/subverting it, it still just reminds me of stuff I abhor.

that taio cruz gives me a headache. slots in with lady antebellum, that taylor track and ke$ha as music with undeniable pop appeal, but no discernable character. like a clip-art version of the guetta/BEP sound. do not want.

I said "forgettable radio pop".

this song gets the production horribly wrong which is a shame because organ when done well is a brilliant sound. sadly this is more cliff richard than blonde on blonde.

being "lol kanye", i definitely agree that if every one of those guests was audible, particularly elly jackson, the song would be even worse. nah it's more like lol kanye, you made a big deal about getting all those names on your record, flying them out to hawaii, the roster implies its own importance, and for all that the musical effect is exactly the same as if he'd just got rihanna and fergie on a track. except that doesn't look half as impressive to critics!

Ariel Pink goes a lot of different directions, though, where Bethany has on blinders. xps

the punchiness of BLBS sounds great after all of the indie & mainstream excess of that last few entries. A dollop of Cliff Richard is fine by me!

From Lex's rant I'd expected Gayngs to sound a lot more like, say, the Dirty Projectors but this is just like really bland trip-hop with some soft rock leanings. Do not want.

The Beach House album got pretty boring pretty quickly but Zebra is sublime, wish they could have kept up that level of quality over an album. Otherwise, this is a pretty dire stretch we're in.

gave that ariel pink song 5/10 when i reviewed it. i remember it had one nice surf guitar line and was otherwise entirely forgettable. not as bad as gayngs tho.

yeah this is much better than most of the other stuff recently, but it isn't as breezy and summery as it wants to be, and in the end isn't my thing either. just a bit dull.

but shit, cat, how much of this was there this year? indie bands reviewing smoothed-out 80s pop sounds through a gauzy (but pointedly not "lo fi") filter, i mean. there was gayngs, ariel p, twin shadow... who else?
