vienn?tta (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, I was ready to hate this song during the country cheese verse buildup but that chorus is fantastic.

52. BEACH HOUSE "Zebra" [266 points, 9 votes]
Youtube

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

Sharpen your knives folks

Davek (davek_00), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

"need you now" is sublime when it actually is 1am and you're a little drunk

Yeah, I can see that maybe.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

yeah def. hearing echoes of APP in the Lady Antebellum...

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

whatever, Zebra kicks ass!

skip, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

But it does sound like a "hit song" fwiw.

yeh but from 1992

idgi fridays (blueski), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

Every Beach House CD should have Julee Cruise - Falling Into The Night put in as an intentional factory error.

Davek (davek_00), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

Voted for this. The standout track on the album I think. Just lovely.

waka flocka flamini (pandemic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

Wanted to vote 'take care' or 'walk in the park' instead of 'Zebra' but weren't nominated iirc. Still happy to see it around.

Moka, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

my other music-nerd friend has listened to Beach House, but I have yet to hear any yet...

so far, it's...decent.

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

hmm... on paper, beach house should be something i really love, but for the most part their music bores me

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

Catch the wave!

Moodles, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

Is the spotify list being updated? I want to take a listen when I get home.

Moka, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

lady antebellum is overproduced tosh otm can we forget about her now plz, shelf-life of abt 3 minutes let alone 25 years

oooooooh beach house is sumptuous! ACTUAL MELODIES YOU GUYS

sadly it's also softer than a baby's skull

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

This is fine, not sure I'll return to it...if I was more allergic to indie sounds I'd probably hate it though.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

the beach house album is definitely best heard on headphones or in the car

Dan S, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

I learned to love Teen Dream during snowmaggedon 2010, stuck in my apartment while we got 2 feet of snow in 1 day. Seeing them play live kind of ruined it--they are a glorified drum circle--but if you can separate the people from the studio product then it's still a great listen.

Same. I did rather like the 7" version of "Used to Be," but they sucked all the life out of it when it was re-recorded for the album.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

re: "need you now" - i am maybe more simpatico with pop-country than i realize because there is nothing in that song that really puts me off or that codes as "cheese" to me? as it is though i only ever end up listening to a small handful of country songs every year

beach house placing in the 50s seems about right to me

opeth winfrey (donna rouge), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

This song is purty. After hearing a couple of Beach House tracks, I may need to check out the whole album.

Moodles, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

Beach House sounds like it should appear on a hoy hoy's fuzzwave thread

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

Forgot to vote for 'Zebra', but remembered to vote for 'Need You Now'. Glad to see both of them place. Things they have in common: they both capture their respective creators' aesthetic so well that they pretty much obviate the need for the rest of the albums that they are on.

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

Beach House is pretty but not very interesting.

emil.y, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

idk, even if you don't like it surely you can hear the MASSIVE HOOK?

― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, January 25, 2011 9:53 AM (56 seconds ago) Bookmark

thing is, big hooks aren't all that hard to come by. corny indie records you wouldn't blow your nose on even got em, sometimes. so does that kanye record you couldn't spare a kind word for. it's not the hook (which is great), it's how it's delivered that kills the song for me.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

lost interest before the end tbh

btw what is with 'country' being a genre with a bit of slide guitar and a whole load of glossy big-studio sheen? i am no conservative but isn't country something else?

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

my friend said the Beach House record was a good one to fall asleep to...

Sounds about right.

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

The bit that sounds like "Anything You Want" is annoying in the way it recalls a catchier song and I get distracted every time.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

With Beach House, I'm liking the music more than the singing though...

Moodles, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

Beach House - another I'd never heard before. Prettily inoffensive. Have they licensed it for fabric softener ads yet?

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

my friend said the Beach House record was a good one to fall asleep to...

Ha! That's always a plus for me with both music and movies.

Moodles, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

xps to lj: the term "country" has the same amount of worth now as the term "punk" (neither accurately describe what they originally described)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

sorry, ILM, I liked the poll yesterday but today's results have been mostly fucking awful. will persevere tho.

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

i can't even listen to any of their pre-'teen dream' songs all the way through so i was amazed i enjoyed this album as much as i did

opeth winfrey (donna rouge), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

LJ I have a feeling you are OffTM irt the shelf life of Lady Antebellum...I have a feeling that song has a bright future being pumped into supermarkets barely above audible level...

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

one of the best things about the beach house album is victoria legrand's voice!

Dan S, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

If its not dream-housey enough: Zebra (Ring Trick remix)

Pauper Management Improved (Sanpaku), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Beach House is like Angelo Badalamenti producing Best Coast

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

or scratch off Badalamenti, and put Robin Guthrie in there

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

I suspect that Angelo Badalamenti producing just about anything would be good.

Moodles, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

I always forget that Beach House and Best Coast are different things.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

This next one marks the end of the bonus round, as these countdowns usually start at #50. I'm a little sad it didn't make it in, but at least it's the closest runner-up...

51. GAYNGS "The Gaudy Side of Town" [266 points, 13 votes]
Youtube

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

i still don't think i've got beach house and best coast straight. both are inoffensively dull i guess? kind of like if wistful nostalgia was a product and you had a tv advert for it

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

on the other hand FUCK GAYNGS

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, this is a good one. Still trying to decide if I like the rest of the Gayngs album though.

lol I know what this feels like...

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

this sounds like I expected Grizzly Bear to sound. leaving it at that. I suppose it'll turn out that a member of Grizzly Bear is in Gayngs now...
