Can your monkey do the Bot? (seandalai), Monday, 24 January 2011 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

that is surprising

bouquet brigade (electricsound), Monday, 24 January 2011 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

is that the one that goes "you are the best thing that's ever been mean"?

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Monday, 24 January 2011 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

re: Die Antwoord, I liked the vaguely rave-y feel of "Beat Boy" (yeah the best), & "I Don't Need You" and "Very Fancy" & mostly love Yolandi Visser's brattiness on "Wat Kyk Jy" and "$copie". Fish Paste i thought was funny, esp the Mariah Carey bit. As I said before, the premise is pretty thin...

This just in: Drugs A. Money still crzay (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 24 January 2011 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

love this fives song

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Monday, 24 January 2011 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

if i voted my ballot would have been:

1. Yung Humma - Let Me Smang It
2. The Dream - Yamaha

and then a bunch of other tracks

gr8080, Monday, 24 January 2011 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

Seeing The Fives actually place and seeing people check it out for the first time is making me kind of emotional.

Tim F, Monday, 24 January 2011 22:32 (fifteen years ago)

that is how i feel about 'lemme smang it'

challopian youtubes (deej), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

That's how I'll feel when people find out the top 5 is all witch house. j/k

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 January 2011 22:36 (fifteen years ago)

cool list so far u guys

flopson, Monday, 24 January 2011 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the Fives thread was kind of a dismal failure in turning people onto the song but if everyone who voted for it put it in their top 3 it's got to be doing something right, even if there were only five of us.

77. DIDDY-DIRTY MONEY "Ass on the Floor" [222 points, 7 votes]
This is kind of a revelation. I was only half paying attention when they did it on SNL, and J0rdan says it wasn't the greatest rendering of this song. But it sounds really great today!

76. VAMPIRE WEEKEND "Giving Up the Gun" [222 points, 10 votes, 1 first place vote]
I only found out recently that this song actually predates VW as a band (apparently it was something Ezra wrote a while back?) and it sounds like it. Good, but far from great.

75. AZARI & III "Reckless (With Your Love) (Tensnake remix)" [228 points, 8 votes]
I like the throwback hallmarks, but this remix is probably 3 minutes too long.

74. CRYSTAL CASTLES "Celestica" [232 points, 8 votes]
Nice aural candy, but it's a really shallow song with limited replay appeal.

73. TAYLOR SWIFT "Mean" [232 points, 8 votes, 1 first place vote]
I've grown to like Taylor, but this is almost like a caricature of her worst qualities as a writer/performer.

72. MARINA & THE DIAMONDS "Shampain" [234 points, 10 votes]
Love this. There's a whole thread on ILM about tbh.

71. RIHANNA "What's My Name" [234 points, 11 votes]
It's better w/o Drake on it. It was WAY better when it was "Rude Boy".

70. THE FIVES ft. VANYA TAYLOR "It's What You Do (Hottest By Far)" [236 points, 5 votes, 1 first place vote]
Was just introduced to this. I could see myself listening to it until I burn out. So, about 150 times over the next three weeks.

69. YUNG HUMMA ft. FLYNT FLO$$Y "Lemme Smang It" [236 points, 8 votes, 2 first place votes]
Like I said before, this track seems bad to me. It doesn't fill me with rage, but it just makes me wonder what 8 people on ILM think makes it SO GREAT. Might as well be "Chocolate Rain" or something.

68. RICK ROSS ft. STYLES P "B.M.F. (Blowin' Money Fast)" [238 points, 12 votes]
Didn't vote for it, but I like it okay.

67. THE KNIFE "Colouring of Pigeons" [242 points, 7 votes, 1 first place vote]
I like my Knife less epic/outsider than this, I guess. I'll give it the 2am test later and see if I like it more in the middle of the night.

66. CASSIE "Skydiver" [242 points, 8 votes]
I've heard some good Cassie songs thanks to ILM, but this isn't really one of the best.

(TIE) 64. KELIS "Acapella" [242 points, 9 votes]
Like this more now than when I first heard it months ago.

(TIE) 64. FOUR TET "Love Cry" [242 points, 9 votes]
This is good, but likely won't turn me back into a Four Tet fan.

63. JAVIERA MENA "Hasta La Verdad" [244 points, 8 votes, 1 first place vote]
She could be singing in Martian and I'd still like this. It's mostly about the sound of it anyway.

62. SWANS "No Words/No Thoughts" [248 points, 7 votes, 1 first place vote]
I've mostly only ever appreciated Swans rather than actually liked them, and this is much the same. I'm glad some people are really into it, though.

61. GAMES "Strawberry Skies" [250 points, 7 votes]
Great experience hearing this for the first time today. Then I heard another Games track and realized it's probably an anomaly (right?).

Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 January 2011 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the Fives thread was kind of a dismal failure in turning people onto the song but if everyone who voted for it put it in their top 3 it's got to be doing something right, even if there were only five of us.

i'm wondering if funk butcher's "pull me close" got any other votes - i think i prefer that to "it's what you do"...

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Monday, 24 January 2011 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

"chocolate rain" is a jam

gr8080, Monday, 24 January 2011 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

a) yes thank you! i feel like such an idiot for not keeping up with funky because i fucking love everything recommended to me
b) i feel like what you said about people hearing and liking "ass on the floor" for the first time. would have been my #1

I have some picks coming up in overflowing bounty, though keep in mind that The Fives is my number 1 so you're coming in at the top.

Tim F, Monday, 24 January 2011 23:09 (fifteen years ago)

i'm wondering if funk butcher's "pull me close" got any other votes - i think i prefer that to "it's what you do"...

Shit, I knew I'd forgotten one. I did vote for 'Stupid', which probably won't place here.

Matt DC, Monday, 24 January 2011 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

i didn't see in on the list - would have voted for it otherwise

whitney from mtv's the city (tpp), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

btw if you dont use "old.css" in preferences, try it out on this thread cause jordan's jpegs look way cooler BIG

gr8080, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 06:37 (fifteen years ago)

^this is true, altho i find the css in general to be kinda intolerable

wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 06:43 (fifteen years ago)

that's cause you're a n00b

gr8080, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 06:54 (fifteen years ago)

I am srsly looking forward to the rest of this list. Just wish I didn't have to work so I could listen/comment in real time.

Thanks and kudos to everyone who put in the effort.

alpine static, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 07:17 (fifteen years ago)

ogmor, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

good lord lemme smang it. finally, a song that draws on lawns&the wild thornberrys, i knew 2010 would deliver eventually. the tone&delivery of these lines is exquisite. thank you ilx for bringing this into my life

ogmor, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

J0rdan's working today, so I'll be counting down the next set of results.

60. TAYLOR SWIFT "Mine" [250 points, 7 votes, 1 first place vote]

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

Hi!

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

Hello!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

Don't have much to say about this, I'm not a big Taylor Swift fan and this just sounds like a catchy Taylor Swift song to me.

Glenroe in 3D (seandalai), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

yep, same for me

Moodles, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

it's a great song but not the taylor swift song i voted for

whitney from mtv's the city (tpp), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

I'm unable to connect emotionally with the yearnings of down home teenage girls.

Moodles, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

taylor swift

when the president talks to based god (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

not bad

omar little, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

ok this is a taylor swift song i love unreservedly, though i don't think i have any more to say about it than i already have in its thread/on the jukebox. i didn't vote for it though, and it's not in the top 5 of the album for me - still, 9/10 easy. it bridges the gap between fearless and speak now really well, i think.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

Hi, I have yet to peruse this thread properly. And so far I think I've only heard a couple of things off it.

Very pleased the lex is giving Swans a bit of a go. I'm not a huge fan or anything, but that track is pretty good. It doesn't surprised me too much because I know lex has expressed some love for things like Elbow, Tom Waits etc who are all suitably dark and epic in a particular way.

The Games track that mystifies me is Planet Party. I hope it shows up.

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

Also, what are you guys like? What the fuck is the appeal of Taylor Swi... hehe, only joking - JOKING!

Bernard V. O'Hare (dog latin), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

you like Tom Waits, lex?

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

lol I didn't expect there to be only two degrees of separation between Lex & Van Vliet

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

taylor swift always sounds a bit like the americana equivalent of faux-oirish celt-rock tbh, except with pop! production!

dgi but hey I guess she does it better than Vex Red

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

if you can't say anything nice...

skip, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

"Mine" is good, but I like "Mean" a little better...

some hills are never seen (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

this song -______-

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

"mine" is okay. certainly catchy enough, but it belongs to a genre of things i don't care for and can't relate to. like the girl version of nickleback. unfortunately, i don't like nickleback, and i'm not a girl, so...

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

i totally said something nice. cotton eyed joe is an all-time great

I've been dancing since 9 and I'm tired and hungry (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

'mine' would sound good in the middle of a 40 min block of country tunes, i wouldn't switch it off, but i'm not sure what's particularly special about it.

omar little, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

RE: "Mine"--I like the lyrics alright though: Swift breezes by the "careless man's careful daughter" line, but details like that redeem the singer-songwriter tradition imo...
