to paraphrase a classic quote out of context anyone who isnt voting 'lemme smang it' in their theoretical new lists is lying to themselves & to god
― challopian youtubes (deej), Monday, 24 January 2011 19:53 (fifteen years ago)
I was talking about Javiera Mena, but I guess it applies a little to Games too.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, January 24, 2011 11:50 AM (1 minute ago) Bookmark
jeez, i'd say it applies way more to that games track. it's all blurred and half erased, in the style, but would otherwise slot in fine on 80s MTV, between lucky star and smalltown boy or something
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Monday, 24 January 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)
xp MIA will be nowhere near the Trax top 10. Possibly /\/\/\Y/\ has a decent chance in albums..
― Davek (davek_00), Monday, 24 January 2011 19:54 (fifteen years ago)
the language barrier almost always stops me loving foreign-language pop
Depends on the language for me. I listen to a ton of Swedish and French music that I don't understand at all, and some Espanol stuff in lesser numbers. If the songs are good, though, I don't care if I can't properly sing along.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
I am still baffled by 'Lemme Smang It' but I'm sure it will grow on me eventually. About to check out the stuff I haven't heard.
― Alex in Montreal, Monday, 24 January 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
I think maybe I put Taylor Swift's "Mean" as my #1? can't remember, dashed off a ballot on the run last week. I thought at first that "Mean" would be a country smash since on the album it's the most trad country-ish song but I wonder if its triumphant foreshadowing of big city life is gonna fly with country radio programmers.

and Games generally are considered chillwave
more because people prefer to define chillwave by the nebulous 80s aesthetic rather than specific sounds or musical aspects tho i think. also it depends on the track (but never gonna win that argument).
― idgi fridays (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2011 19:58 (fifteen years ago)
xxp Yeah, "Mean" kind of has a bluegrass feel, doesn't it.
― Tyler/Perry's "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" (jaymc), Monday, 24 January 2011 19:59 (fifteen years ago)
^i'd agree with that...think the Games song V79 posted is much more chillwave-sounding (& better)
xp: blueski

i'm half expecting/hoping to see teqkilla place, but prob just wishful thinking
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Monday, 24 January 2011 20:02 (fifteen years ago)
I'm so often put off by what passes for lyricism that I sometimes find it easier to like foreign-language pop than English pop, as I don't have to cringe my way through. Not always true, but often enough.

the wong kar wai effect
― plax (ico), Monday, 24 January 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
xp idk, I just have a pretty broad definition of chillwave. well tbh arguing what is chillwave and what is not is at least pointless (not to say it's stupid)
― V79, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:08 (fifteen years ago)
wouldn't be too fazed if 'Everything Is Working' was some old Casino vs Japan track tho tbh (but maybe they're a reasonable foreteller of chillwave as a thing in some ways)
― idgi fridays (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2011 20:09 (fifteen years ago)
Chillwave is a lifestyle, doods
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:09 (fifteen years ago)
Azari is the only one I voted so far, but Diddy-Dirty Money/Kelis/Four Tet are all standouts from albums I voted for. Fives is my best new discovery.
― knits you a baby (The Reverend), Monday, 24 January 2011 20:11 (fifteen years ago)
xp I thought it's obvious (well it's obvious to me) that "chillwave is a vibe" and mainly a vibe

I wish I'd heard "Lemme Smang It" before the poll results, I would've voted for it. I love these kind of novelty songs that are also good tunes.

lemme smang it is pretty terrible. love the diddy track.

why is it terrible
― challopian youtubes (deej), Monday, 24 January 2011 20:23 (fifteen years ago)
Because it's like Drop It Like It's Hot, except more limp and dumb.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:24 (fifteen years ago)
hate the vocals, negative-to-ambivalent on the music

There's little need to personally insult because we don't like a particular song. I'm happy that you enjoy it.
― omar little, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:29 (fifteen years ago)
deej, I wouldn't expect you to like some borderline twee indie pop song that I think is great, and I know that going in, so I'd never bother asking you to explain yourself.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:29 (fifteen years ago)
i question the sense of humor of anyone that doesn't crack up @ the "smang it" video

― Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:31 (fifteen years ago)
and on top of it the song is hilarious & catchy -- it's the "lazy sunday" of strip club songs
― wee-based god (J0rdan S.), Monday, 24 January 2011 20:31 (fifteen years ago)
does this mean tonetta gonna show up?

Get back to me when one of 'em shows up in the countdown and you bemoan it. (I can't remember what's ahead and I'm not going to look, but if one's there I don't expect you to be quiet about it.)
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 January 2011 20:32 (fifteen years ago)
"crack up" is def. the response elicited from me -- but in a smh.gif way, not good
― the new mordant & zingy ilxor persona (ilxor), Monday, 24 January 2011 20:32 (fifteen years ago)
it is much better than lazy sunday
