mean's kind of great (first time i've ever heard anything by taylor swift) and horrible in equal measure. i mean, the voice and tune and arrangement and musicianship and even the bulk of the lyrics are excellent, can totally see why it'd be a huge hit. and then there's the word "mean," which seems to deflate and flatten everything the song is trying to say, worse yet the cringeworthy "mean and pathetic and a liar and alone in life" part that everybody's rightly complaining about.

that said, the lifeless word "mean" and that sneering and would-be-crushing bridge are the most explicitly teenage things about the song, so they read as canny in a way, reinforcing her persona, perhaps making her more relatable to the young women who'd like to be saying something similar, i dunno. i appreciate it, but could never see myself listening to such a thing for pleasure (never say never...)

i've only heard "hollywood" and "i am not a robot" by marina but based on those she brings me out in hives. does she do the moronic quirkygirl enunciation on "shampain" too?

Hmm, Marina. Didn't like her at all at first, but she was loads of fun to interview and I ended up warming to "Shampain" in particular.

(But not enough to vote for it, though; "Celestica" is the only one of mine to place thus far. Another act that I changed my mind on in 2010, and absolutely totally fucking AWESOME when I saw live. The records cannot prepare you.)

It's like Florence And The Machine jamming with the Pussycat Dolls.

They're pretty big in the UK having sprung up in the Florence & The Machine slipstream but I find Marina & The Diamonds pretty much unbearable, it just reminds me of second generation Britpop glammed up a bit.

Crystal Castles strike me as one of those bands who will one day put out an amazing album only to find out the world has stopped caring.

haw, well, i gave "i am not a robot" a 1/10 on the jukebox. perhaps best if i don't bother with "shampain" because the idea of a song that's many times worse than "robot" is giving me the fear.

fyi marina & the diamonds is a solo project. the "diamonds" refer to her fans. yeah i know. afaik this was her stage name from the beginning, ie before she had any fucking fans to speak of bar her a&r men.

"Shampain" is fun, but I can't say that I love it, and Taylor Swift is a pretty painful listen for me. Can't say I'm in a place in my life where teen country sensations really have much relevance.

I've remembered which Crystal Castles song it is now, that one's really good actually.

kinda surprised anyone cared about "what's my name?" enough to vote for it. the original is...catchy but kind of boring, and dragged waaaaay down by fucking drake. however! these two remixes are BRILLIANT:
