whiney is this because i called your corny samples thread bad? lmao

what board is good for a "the Whiney soundboard" c&p metathread btw?
― zvookster, Sunday, 23 January 2011 21:56 (fifteen years ago)
also btw, lol @ calling earl's release "in the tradition of life after death and 36 chambers" and calling a late 90s fondle em freestyle complete with eminem ref "irrelevant"
― zvookster, Sunday, 23 January 2011 21:58 (fifteen years ago)
lol no one is holding a grudge, i just want to know why you think it's somehow OK for cage to say the n-word in a freestyle!

it's certainly not up to zvookster to decree it was never ok to buttfuck a pygmy goat on the A train, but i think we can all agree that's not OK and not worth picking a fight over?

Actually, zvook, the album is called Ready To Die, and the freestyle you posted was indeed irrelevant to your argument. The Cage you linked to is not the latter-day Cage I was pretty specifically referring to in relation to Tyler. Dude pretty much reinvented himself, didn't he? I mean, his early shit wouldn't sound out of place next to Necro and Ill Bill on a mixtape. Now he's like the evil version of Slug. Derailment, whatever, just defending what I said since you obviously misunderstood.
travel makes a good point re: Shyheim, who had a lot of promise early on - those first few 12"s and even parts of the Rugged Chyld album or whatever it was called. Not sure what happened there but it definitely helps illustrate my point that most rappers - Wu included - do their best work before they're aware anyone's really paying attention.
I love how there are like four different arguments going on at once here.

I dig the idea of an overarching framework, but it just isn't original to me. Dudes have been mining the 'I"m troubled and suicidal and I'mma shock you now, look, I'm a cutter and shit" thing for a while now - Cage has made a career of it...

i thought ofwgkta were doing it for the lulz? i dunno, but they don't come across as particularly "troubled" to me, more like they're having a ball.

these guys have collectively released 6-8 hours of music in a two year period and their hit rate is pretty damn impressive. calling tyler a subpar rapper is o_O of the highest degree.
my argument for hodgy beats as OF secret weapon is this comp with no earl or tyler tracks (ok so I may have slipped one or two tyler alias tracks in there).

Hodgy isn't as much of a character as Tyler or Earl but dude is still pretty awesome.

Yeaaaahhh, it all sounds alright and all, but it's kind of....functionless? It doesn't feel like it fits into any context where I want to listen to music, just kinda sound for sound's sake. A couple of the tracks with actual raps are keepers tho:

so far i've read that earl is: at boarding school/boot camp/grounded/on vacation.
because his mum: heard his album and was disgusted/upset at general bad behavior/ just wanted to move anyway...
what's the deal?

ah come on, this is the hit:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqNw9EnBSZg
haven't got my head around the jet age of tomorrow album yet, but i like it a lot. it's not mind-blowing or anything, but it makes for some v nice dead-brain late night chillout music. would probably go well w certain chemical enhancements, but i can relate just fine without. fwiw, i don't like either of the "tracks with actual raps" that rev posted. there's a lurching, goofy, all-elbows quality to "welcome home son" and "dust off" (another rap-centric track) that annoys me. i think TJAOTF is stronger with spacey/droney stuff like "pack up", "the finer things", and the last minute and a half of "fallen angels". of the more antic, upbeat tracks, "wonderland" stands out. no rapping, but the beats & production kill me.
but i know one thing though, you better hate me (hate me hate me)i'm all business like a blackberry, smellin' like some strawberriesin the south of france on a FERRY...cuz i want all the finest things in this life, smell gooddress nice, got a kid, maybe a wife settin', money gettin'and i got five whips, hangin' with my homies doin' acid tripsnow it's all about the shorty with the sexy lipsand the gold-plated automatics with banana clips
