cool post thx dawg
― flopson, Sunday, 23 January 2011 19:49 (fifteen years ago)
all the tyler & earl tracks slay + session is cool, so idk what posse cuts yr talking abt
bastard has an overarching framework that makes it hang together as an album whereas earl is barely a record, 'just' 25 mins of dope loose tracks
seems to me that mellowhype & domo have their charms

Who would think that a group of teenagers who released 12 albums in a year would have some that vary in quality

PS I posted 'ofwgkta!' as my Facebook status the other day and it went 103 posts before I deleted it. Dudes were calling each other douchebags, hipsters, making threats...

man tyler is such a great rapper. i feel like he's improved? my faves are his verses are on blackenedwhite (when i saw wolfgang you say fuck that/room full of wolves inhalers & used blunt raps) also looove his verse on fuck the police. definitely two of my favourites verses of the year. i like the character stuff & wolf haley interplay plus such dense rhymes spit so mean yet so nonchalant & graceful (houston we have a ni**er down and the ni**er that did it loves them gun sounds/bust triple six rounds now thats six cops found on that ground)
― flopson, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:03 (fifteen years ago)
Wasn't bragging - didn't know half the cats on there posting. It just got outta hand. I was just trying to sorta illustrate how divisive this shit is. But, you know, whatever.
zvook - "Session" was what I was thinking about. Domo and Hodgy are ok, but who the hell are Jasper, Taco, Casey Veggies, Vince Staples, etc? Some of these fools are sub-Ice T's Syndicate. I can't hang with 15 tracks of Tyler, either, dude just doesn't have the lyrics or the flow to sustain an album IMHO. I dig the idea of an overarching framework, but it just isn't original to me. Dudes have been mining the 'I"m troubled and suicidal and I'mma shock you now, look, I'm a cutter and shit" thing for a while now - Cage has made a career of it.
Earl, to me, is something special. "How the fuck I fit a axe in a satchel?" LOL
As for Biggie etc - I think there's plenty of reason to name-check dudes who've made hip hop classics (and, err, Theodore Unit) when discussing a dude who has the potential to make one in 2011. Just sayin.'
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
oh my god, they've been a band for like a year, wait for the other dudes to come up or like turn 20 before dismissing them entirely for fuck's sake.
― Fuckin' perfect. Like Marilyn Chamberz perfect (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:08 (fifteen years ago)
I'M SO OVER THIS BAND I'VE HEARD OF FOUR MONTHS AGO, THEY REALLY NEED TO STEP THEIR GAME UP
― Fuckin' perfect. Like Marilyn Chamberz perfect (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:09 (fifteen years ago)
yeah heaven forbid that ppl evaluate music that exists here and now instead of judging artists entirely on their potential
― bernard snowy, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:10 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I was gonna say. BTW I'm dismissing them entirely while listening to nothing but for the past 48 hours.
Also, seems like hip hop's a young man's game - you bought a Jeru or a Black Moon album recently? - and so if cats are putting this shit out, why not judge it on its merits instead of trying to justify the (occasional) wackness?
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:11 (fifteen years ago)
I can see Whiney in like '91 - "I don't know, I think these Da Youngstas' best days are ahead of 'em. Illegal, too. Give 'em a chance, fellas."
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:13 (fifteen years ago)
rap is a young man's game but it's rarely as young as 16. And it's hardly ever made by teenagers who come fully formed with such a defined aesthetic. Like, all I'm saying is, I'm not ready to dismiss Taco because I'm not 100% sure we've been shown what Taco can really do yet.

de la soul and ice cube were teens when they both debuted with some pretty fully formed aesthetics

if assholes u just come off like like an angry boring dick when u barge into a thread like "ok let me set it straight: 90% of this shit is worthless & i've got hundreds of people i've never even met before on facebook"

― Fuckin' perfect. Like Marilyn Chamberz perfect (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:23 (fifteen years ago)
I just accept every friend request that comes in, really.
I'm not 'barging' - I've been active on the Earl thread. This one too, I think, upthread, but who can keep track, really.
I came here because I've been listening to thsi so much I think it's soundtracking my dreams right now. Sorry you disagree with my assessment and it's made you butt-hurt and territorial. If anything, I'm just going on record, because, like a lot of you, my first exposure to this I was all "OMG best shit ever, love of hip hop officially restored" and now I'm just sort of taking the time to take it all in and listen more critically.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:24 (fifteen years ago)
And I still think it's pretty awesome.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:25 (fifteen years ago)
"barge into" vs. "post in" (xp oh assport touched on that already nvm)
I mean I like these guys but I don't understand why they have to stand or fall as an entire crew? just seems like laziness/unwillingness to engage critically with something u love & are excited about
― bernard snowy, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:25 (fifteen years ago)
I'm just going on record, because, like a lot of you, my first exposure to this I was all "OMG best shit ever, love of hip hop officially restored"
Literally no one in this thread had a reaction nearly as hyperbolic or embarrassing as this or the one you posted in the Earl thread.
― Fuckin' perfect. Like Marilyn Chamberz perfect (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:28 (fifteen years ago)
LOL embarrassing from a dude who's claim to fame is using the 'F' word at a sxsw conference or whatever
xpost That's correct, bernard, I see what you're saying. I mean, I'm firmly in the pro-OF camp here. I hope that's clear. I'm just saying that following a critical engagement with some shit I love and am excited about, patterns have emerged. I hope I don't ruffle any feathers for evoking the Wu again, God forbid, but I guess all I'm saying is that every crew has a few Cappadonnas for every Raekwon.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:32 (fifteen years ago)
i don't even disagree rly i just found the way he phrased it kind of unnecessarily confrontational & self-righteously not befallen to hype & saw the zing opportunity & took it. for the record: earl is my favourite, tyler is my second favourite, those are the only two w/ imo very solid & unique personas/styles, the rest are all sort of a blur in my mind. sometimes some of the kids they let rap on their records are p bad at rapping, but idk i can let that slide p easily given the magnitude of their output & quality of production
― flopson, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:33 (fifteen years ago)
^^^^ pretty much exactly what I said.

― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:39 (fifteen years ago)
I dig the idea of an overarching framework, but it just isn't original to me. Dudes have been mining the 'I"m troubled and suicidal and I'mma shock you now, look, I'm a cutter and shit" thing for a while now - Cage has made a career of it.
...this is like, cohesive albums are an unoriginal concept. your thing abt cage applies more to earl than tyler, who deepens a shock aesthetic into explicit teen alienation "our imagination are creations of these fucking situations". does this sound like tyler to u?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKvvAOMmDHI
but u attach it to tyler bc u think it a disparaging association, how lazy and dishonest. and i think coming into a thread and dropping allusions to biggie wu tang in relation to something u happen to be digging is the kind of thing that gets rolling rap dudes tagged as "unwelcoming",
― zvookster, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:39 (fifteen years ago)
I never said it was a disparaging association - you ascribed that all by yourself. As it happens, I dig Cage - more his recent Mike-Muir-as-emo-rapper style than the irrelevant freestyle you just linked to which is probably older than half the people who post here.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:43 (fifteen years ago)
Tyler's album kinda reminds me of Cage's last two. That's all I was saying.
it just isn't original to me. Dudes have been mining the 'I"m troubled and suicidal and I'mma shock you now, look, I'm a cutter and shit" thing for a while now
sorry i took this as disparaging somehow ;)
― zvookster, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:48 (fifteen years ago)
B-b-but I love the 'I'm troubled and suicidal and I'mma shock you now, look, I'm a cutter and shit' thing! :)

Cage said the n-word like three times in that, what the fuck
― Fuckin' perfect. Like Marilyn Chamberz perfect (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:54 (fifteen years ago)
basically if u show up on an ilm thread three months late being all like "i have OPINIONS 4 u!" u gonna get clowned a bit most likely.

he says nigga, let's call that "the other n-word" or something just so we don't equate a term that stands in for any male person in a lot of hip hop with "nigger". not saying there's no issues with that word ever but c'mon
― zvookster, Sunday, 23 January 2011 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

wow rapper Cage said something shocking
― bernard snowy, Sunday, 23 January 2011 21:12 (fifteen years ago)
or did something dumb
xp Three months late, reppin' for these dudes for months, you know, either way. Wasn't aware I was 'clowned.' How was I 'clowned,' exactly, destroyer? Oh, right by reviving a popular thread, no wait, 'showing up and being all like 'i have OPINIONS 4 u!', aka, umm, ILX.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 23 January 2011 21:12 (fifteen years ago)
or whatever it is that whiney's wtf-ing about
