What is the American equivalent of Britain's Simply Red fixation?

I'm listening right this second to the reggae compilation *Run It Red: Mick Hucknall Selects from 10 Years of Blood and Fire Classics.*

It is great.

Not w/ the lead pipe in the conservatory he's not, Geir!

agreed Micheal Bolton does not run a first-class reaggae reissue label.

Dave Matthews comes from sort of an "alternative" background, but so did Simply Red at the very start as well, so maybe they aren't so far off after all.

Yes, but has Mick Hucknall ever (literally) shit on a boatload of tourists?

I don't know if the Dave Matthews thing works. Do lame college kids (err, university i guess?) in England love simply red and discuss his musical prowess to great lengths, referring to him only by his first name... Simply?

Whatever the equivalent is, it needs to spawn horrors that look like this:

Dan Fogelburg isn't still making records is he?

HA HA HA

I love that bit in 24 Hour Party People when Coogan the narrator lists all the people who would later be famous that were at that Sex Pistols show in London. When they mention Mick Hucknall the scene jumps to some HUGE arena/stadium where the dude is singing...I'm always like, WTF? Never understood the appeal. Is the band named after his hair?

...in Manchester, obv.

Don't forget Hucknall put some of that money in the excellent Blood And Fire reggae reissue label.

they're named after red schoendist right?

I've heard that Mick has a diamond embedded in one of his front teeth. Ultimate bling if it's true.

Michael Bolton is the best choice for 1992, except that no one still cares about him. (Do people still care about Simply Red?)

Only Hucknall.

In some freaky way I always see SR in the same way as Mariah Carey. I'm most probably alone in this.

Not an American, but interestingly, as a perennial big seller in the United States:
Sade

(Maybe it's a lite-R&B thing. Hucknall should keep promoting himself to Quiet Storm radio.)

I wish Hucknall was a Commie.

Quit glaring at Ian Riese-Moraine! He's mentally fraught! (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 18 March 2005 00:34 (nineteen years ago) link
