There's an unexpected piece in this week's EW about why Robyn can't seem to crossover in the US. In short, too many people who sound like her are crowding the market. Now Pink's trying to cop her look too, I guess.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 24 January 2011 06:22 (fifteen years ago)
much as i don't like pink i'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say that was just a coincidence and that the photo just happens to look unusually robyn-esque. i mean, the two don't look that different to begin with and pink has always gone for the androgynous thing.
one of my old friends talked to me the other day and he lol'd about how she (robyn) is going to open for katy perry's tour.
― teledyldonix, Monday, 24 January 2011 14:18 (fifteen years ago)
god someone find my long post from last year about how exasperated I am with the "{female pop singer x} is stealing {female pop singer y}'s look!}" conspiracy theories.
btw one of the reasons Robyn isn't a huge star in America is she looks mannish even compared to Pink
― trv kvnt (some dude), Monday, 24 January 2011 14:29 (fifteen years ago)
pink looks more like herself than robyn in that picture
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 24 January 2011 14:32 (fifteen years ago)
femme fatale lipstick + lacy bra showing + smoky eyeshadow = not very robyn at all, in fact
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 24 January 2011 14:33 (fifteen years ago)
xp and also because while robyn's material may be stylistically pop in every respect, from the hooks to the production, her vocals are much more diffident and detached than most.
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 24 January 2011 14:34 (fifteen years ago)
if robyn was popular would she have this much critical attention?
― *gets the power* (deej), Monday, 24 January 2011 15:54 (fifteen years ago)
why not? her most successful singles are usually the ones that get the most critical attn
― teledyldonix, Monday, 24 January 2011 16:14 (fifteen years ago)
what is it that critics like about her, that makes her stand out, that doesnt resonate w/ the general public?
― *gets the power* (deej), Monday, 24 January 2011 16:19 (fifteen years ago)
idk why the public doesn't like her tbh and i don't really care that much. in 2007 america didn't like her b/c she looked like a dude but i guess ppl would be more receptive to that now.

Am trying to think of moments in Avwiw videos where she has hate for people trying to do their jobs. Taxi theft in this, shoving over hot dog man in "Complicated"... are there others?
(song itself = congratulations, you are the League One Ke$ha)

I know it was released last year but Charice - Pyramid is fucking gorgeous. That's all.

this would be frontrunner for single of the year if it was a straight akon song w/ no flo rida -- in any event i still think the hook is awesome and can tolerate the flo rida parts

― kl0pper city in the ghetto (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:29 (fifteen years ago)
when i say "tolerate" flo rida, i'm using a different level of toleration -- it's not like tolerating ants biting your ankles like w/ some of the worst drake raps, it's more like tolerating sitting in a waiting room w/ no reading material
― kl0pper city in the ghetto (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)
i should note that i mean "single of the year SO FAR"
The lyrics for the new Lady GaGa single (it's being premiered at the Grammys I think) have been released:
http://www.twitlonger.com/show/8e8bt7
They're... really really bad.
― prolego, Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)
damn, FREE RED ONE
― kl0pper city in the ghetto (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:32 (fifteen years ago)
I think this is the worst bit:
DON'T BE A DRAG, JUST BE A QUEENWHETHER YOU'RE BROKE OR EVERGREENYOU'RE BLACK, WHITE, BEIGE, CHOLA DESCENTYOU'RE LEBANESE, YOU'RE ORIENTWHETHER LIFE'S DISABILITIESLEFT YOU OUTCAST, BULLIED, OR TEASEDREJOICE AND LOVE YOURSELF TODAY'CAUSE BABY YOU WERE BORN THIS WAY
NO MATTER GAY, STRAIGHT, OR BI,LESBIAN, TRANSGENDERED LIFEI'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK BABYI WAS BORN TO SURVIVE

lol i'd never heard of "Fernando Garibay" so i looked him up on wiki & he's definitely a classic case of "random pop/rap/r&b producer that obsessively updates their own wikipedia page w/ random productions that no one has heard of"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernando_Garibay
god this song is gonna be massive & holy shiiiit are these lyrics bad
― kl0pper city in the ghetto (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:33 (fifteen years ago)
that said lyrics have really never been that important to her music so w/e
scrolled past those Gaga lyrics -- i can't think of any situation where reading a song's lyrics before you can hear it would do you or the song any good at all
― williamstevenjames (some dude), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:35 (fifteen years ago)
if the new gaga singles aren't at least really good we are all fucked -- feels like it will be so decisive
― flopson, Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:38 (fifteen years ago)
i've been thinking of doing a definitive 'fame era' gaga singles poll before this new one is released
― kl0pper city in the ghetto (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:41 (fifteen years ago)
i kinda feel like the new Gaga album will have like 4-5 huge singles no matter what, so if the first one sucks balls we'll just kind of tolerate it for a month or two and then a good one will kick it off the charts
― williamstevenjames (some dude), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:43 (fifteen years ago)
^^pretty much
― kl0pper city in the ghetto (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:43 (fifteen years ago)
and that if the album does have one terrible single it will probably be the first one. just a hunch i've had, even pre-shitty lyrics leaking.
i've also been wondering whether or not the first week numbers for the album will be the most for the next 5 or so years running
― kl0pper city in the ghetto (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 27 January 2011 23:45 (fifteen years ago)
playing online poker w/ someone in the same room as you is a pretty lame excuse to have a computer in the music video
― based god kwassa kwassa (dayo), Friday, 28 January 2011 01:16 (fifteen years ago)
I know it's a 'thing' now but those casio chords sound really similar to tik tok's casio chords

i remember seeing a youtube clip of her performing "born this way" live a few months back? it was outdoors somewhere, and it was one of her piano-driven elton john style numbers, like "speechless". i didn't catch the lyrics then obviously :o
― lextasy refix (lex pretend), Friday, 28 January 2011 01:22 (fifteen years ago)
more songs like "speechless" would be cool w/ me

there was a live piano-driven song someone posted a youtube of somewhere on ILM last year, i liked it a lot but i'm pretty sure it was not "Born This Way"
― williamstevenjames (some dude), Friday, 28 January 2011 01:37 (fifteen years ago)
it's called "you and i"

I dunno if anyone else here will like this besides me, but it's the new song by Dash & Will who I've been tracking since 2008 (their first batch of singles was really good, and the album wasn't too spotty). This is the first new music since, and they're reportedly working on the second record for later this year.

It's probably "heavier" (?) than most of what gets play in here, but it's not indie and it's not rock, so I don't have any idea where else to slot it.

"Black and Yellow" at #3 ^_______^
― The Reverend, Friday, 28 January 2011 03:34 (fifteen years ago)
Gaga has too much of the 'craftsman' instinct presently to release more than one outright dog at a time.
― Rich Lolwry (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 28 January 2011 03:37 (fifteen years ago)
The GaGa song is interesting because it seems like the most explicit and self-conscious attempt by a big star to make some bwwig universal "generational anthem" (her words) since errr, Madonna's "Vogue"/"Like A Prayer"?
