best part is that those initial 14 posts consist almost entirely of an argument about which mia the thread properly concerns

― metal panda (San Te), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 12:57 (fifteen years ago)
are you incapable of posting in the other m.i.a. threads, seriously?
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 12:59 (fifteen years ago)
i've said my piece, lex. at this point, i'm just messing, and you're keeping the discussion alive as much as anyone else. nor is there anything preventing anyone of us from starting a nice, clean, new thread specifically and clearly devoted to whichever mia they're excited about. not telling you to go do that, mind. just casting about for options...
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:04 (fifteen years ago)
Michaela Grobelny was a very fine DJ when I saw her a few years ago, has anyone seen her play recently?
― Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:12 (fifteen years ago)
xpost jesus if it means that much to you, request the thread split, but idg what you're so up in arms about. It's not like M.I.A. fans intentionally jacked an active thread about someone completely different.
The thread had been dormant and inactive for six years, nobody was talking about the german MIA (hell, half the people in the ORIGINAL thread weren't talking about her), and forks revived it about the other M.I.A., which then generated 3,000 posts.
the other m.i.a. threads as I said are mostly about specific albums or polls where it wouldn't make sense. and also who in the hell is going to post to them now after the conversation has mostly been held here in the last year?
― metal panda (San Te), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:13 (fifteen years ago)
Can the MIA thread be 'split'
there, we can move on with our lives
― metal panda (San Te), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:15 (fifteen years ago)
i've never seen her dj ;_;
i thought she'd been quiet recently, but it seems she quietly released a couple of EPs last year, which i'm now gonna check out...
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:21 (fifteen years ago)
We were lucky enough to have her play twice in Brighton. From memory she played more techno-y than her records would suggest, almost Detroit-y at times. Also seemed to have a love of the party - dancing on the floor after he set, which is all too rare among DJs.
I find her very hit and miss on her releases but like you I haven't checked out the recent tracks yet…
― Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 13:37 (fifteen years ago)
MIA aka Michaela Grobelny
New thread from mods for German MIA containing the initial conversation from this thread.
― Moodles, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 14:59 (fifteen years ago)
FWIW I confine all of my M.I.A. talk to this thread because Lex uselessly rages about how it's the "wrong" thread even though it's not true, hasn't been true since the original 20 posts, and never will be true.
― Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 15:19 (fifteen years ago)
also lol @ claiming that confusing MIA and M.I.A. is the same as confusing Toni Braxton and Tonetta, who for one thing don't have the same name
― Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 15:22 (fifteen years ago)
Is it alright if I use this thread to talk about the hardcore band M.I.A.?

speaking of the MIA vs. M.I.A. confusion, the first mia thread was actually this mya 'gilang'.
started by me because i'd only heard the name said on XFM, never seen it written down. turned out there was a mya, and mia and an M.I.A. !
― piscesx, Thursday, 20 January 2011 02:24 (fifteen years ago)
ugh why do people keep bumping this thread to talk about that m.i.a.? it's not like there's a shortage of threads that are actually about her.― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, January 19, 2011 4:22 AM (17 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

why do people keep bumping this 3,000 post thread on some german artist no one's ever heard of ever?!?!?!
― domo genesis p-orridge (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 20 January 2011 02:25 (fifteen years ago)
this is the newest and also the longest thread relating to the last album, so that's why folk kept reviving it as opposed to the others.

But MAYA was everything M.I.A. wanted it to be, which is why it's great.

I argue that "It Is What It Is" and "It Takes A Muscle" are the exact opposite of "great"
I eventually came around on "Tell Me Why" but I'll never like those two.

whats the matter with them DJP? too sellout?
They are too laconic for my tastes.

That's kind of how I feel. Take out those tracks where she sings (Takes a Muscle, It Iz.., Story to be Told, Tell Me Why) and you've got a strong experimental electro world hip-hop album.

bringing discussion over from the Nguzunguzu thread. Nguzunguzu mixed Vicki Leekx but did we ever figure out who produced what?
The cover says production is from Danjahandz, Munchi, Diplo, Blaqstarr, Switch, Rusko, VIIXIIV and So Japan. Munchi's two tracks are clearly the two called Tamil Beat Munchi and Muder Sounds Munchi. Let Me Hump You is Blaqstarr and Gen -N-E-Y is Diplo, I think, given how pissed he got when she posted it for free on that website, but what did Danja do? I can't hear him here anywhere.
― Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 28 March 2011 17:11 (fifteen years ago)
okay just to be clear... MIA has a song called LET ME HUMP YOU? lol
― fuck this bullshit excuse for a biscuit (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 28 March 2011 17:25 (fifteen years ago)
Blaqstarr ft. M.I.A. but it's on the M.I.A. mixtape, yeah.

Also, as much as I love Beyonce, hearing Maya intone "A Hustler is a female version of a Hustler" in 'You My Love' is something I will never get tired of.

I'm a bit behind the times, and only discovered on saturday that "Jimmy" is just MIA singing over a Bollywood track of the same name. I found the original lost a bit by not having her vocal on it.

That's why I like Story to Be Told as well - it's where autobiography meets polemic, very movingly.
― Pop is superior to all other genres (DL), Saturday, 9 April 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)
She did polemic autobiographical better on MIA from Arular imo. Born Free is a good 'get you going song', it's fun to run to.

2003? That's even before Piracy Funds Terrorism. And that sounds a lot more produced and better than PFT.
― The Sunspots In Your Eyes Are Actually Cataracts, Mr. Rudich (AWALL), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 20:48 (fifteen years ago)
whoops. recording for Arular was apparently in '03, so I guess it's an Arular track. I guess it could fit.
She puts a lot of good songs as bonus tracks, which kind of annoys me since I have to go hunting for them. URAQT, Big Branch, Illygirl are some of her best tracks and all are Japan only or iTune bonus tracks.
― The Sunspots In Your Eyes Are Actually Cataracts, Mr. Rudich (AWALL), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 20:56 (fifteen years ago)
"URAQT" is on the American rerelease of Arular, and "Big Branch" is on the rerelease of Kala.
