since you guys are all here, i'm getting tonight's DJ arsenal ready... Is it racist to spin out "Arab Money"?

like whatever, some dude, it's not like i'm not banging Mouse On The Track and Roachy Gigz and Odd Future all fuckin day either, its just that i don't throw away my old toys when i'm done playing with them.
And also, Em's rap on this is incredible and I'm not gonna stand idly by while someone growing his first pube on ILX shakes his head at me

i don't really listen to any of the people you referred to and i'm not exactly a poster boy for casting aside old rappers. i'm just saying, picking the occasional defensible nu-Em or nu-Jay track and championing it as THE BEST OF THE BEST just looks so square that even if you think you're right you should probably be ready to take some shit for it
― some dude, Saturday, 15 January 2011 04:12 (thirteen years ago) link
"i ain't into s&m / but my whip off the chain" is a v dope line imo
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 05:09 (thirteen years ago) link
also the grocery bagging on this works for me -- the british nonsense at the end is of course unforgivable
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 05:12 (thirteen years ago) link
i'm torn re the beat tho -- when it flourishes it is jarring & not in a good way -- they should've stayed as minimal as possible imo -- the backing vocals are awesome
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 05:14 (thirteen years ago) link
His faggot baiting is more obnoxious than ever, but he's just as good at being obnoxious as he was in 2000, if that makes sense; and paired with Minaj it's a real competition. They foil each other perfectly. In addition, Minaj's "playing a character" shows up how poorly the difference between Em and Slim Shady looks like in 2010.

fwiw earl on "earl" > earl on anything else this year also > anyone else on anything else this year
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link
between the two they don't merely fag bait -- they bait everyone. Equal opportunity malice.
― Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 15 January 2011 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link
his verse is way more sexist than it is homophobic, aside from the use of the word "faggot"
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 05:17 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah, they're cruel to everyone, and pretty good at it.

that one was a little too obvious imo but I liked pretzel for a brain/razor for a head/pretzel for a brain
but he also says he's gonna stick a falcon wing up a fly ass so it's a zero sum verse in the end

errr pencil for a frame
Roman's Revenge would have made my Pazz and Jop were it a single in 2010.
it was released as a standalone thing on halloween. are we really still stuck on old-skool definitions of "single"?
i love bits of eminem's verses - beginning and end of the first one especially, and how he reworks the chorus ("make that face, go on, scrunch it up at me/show me the target so i can LUNGE AND ATTACK IT"), but between that he kind of falls off the beat and tries to get too many words in. his second verse is ehhhh, though i do like how the faggot line is accompanied by the one moment of sonic pretty girlishness.
every moment nicki's on the mic is astonishing to hear and to rap along to, she sounds unhinged, and the beat is insane. top 4 moments:
1. the outraged vibrato on "i see them dusty-ass FILAAAS, LEVIIIIS, raggedy-ass HOLES IN YOUR KNEE-HIIIIGHS" that reminds me of missy's guest spot on trina's "rewind that back"2. "i'm a BAD BITCH - i'm a CUNT" - what other rapper has even gone there with the c word3. "OVERSEAS / CHURCH / VATICAN" - beyond the grocery bag and off the deep end4. "M-M-M-M-MANNING ELI" - hearing his names in the right order feels completely wrong now
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:05 (thirteen years ago) link
3. "OVERSEAS / CHURCH / VATICAN" - beyond the grocery bag and off the deep end
^^ i actually agree w/ this -- same thing with "hang it up... flat screen... plasma"
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:08 (thirteen years ago) link
i realized that my original problem w/ grocery bagging was not how lame the punchlines were or how the structure highlighted them, but just that it was such a boring & monotonous way to rap, just very assembly line -- the triple bagging sort of subverts that tho in a way that's kinda free form
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:10 (thirteen years ago) link
also her grocery bagging in the second verse doesn't even consist of punchlines, it's literally just random words hurled at the beat, but i love how it actually ends up making a fragmented kind of sense where you get to fill in the bits in between, and that it really conveys a sense of menace - the lunatic asylum of mumbling/cackling connects to the mass hysteria of scared/shook/panicking that leads into the need to pray combined w/all the sinister connotations of vatican...

"hardest diss track in forever" is pretty ridic
― some dude, Friday, January 14, 2011 7:10 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark
the thing about the song is that it's a great diss track in an unconventional way. obv there are only a few lines shot directly at kim and certainly no "takeover" style point-by-point breakdown (which would be unnecessary anyway), but it's still a very aggressive & confrontational track. like, just the general theme of the track & the medieval via bowser's castle flourishes during the chorus, right down to 'rah rah/ like a dungeon dragon' create just a very sinister & foreboding atmosphere that, in combination w/ the fact that we KNOW that it's about kim, elevate nicki's threats & taunts -- and she does say she'll put a hit out on her!
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:23 (thirteen years ago) link
damn, i just realized the odd (intentional?) coincidence of eminem being on the song where nicki goes at kim
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 15 January 2011 08:26 (thirteen years ago) link
ha! i would guess unintentional. has eminem ever done a song with lil kim?

i like "moment 4 life" a lot, tho i wish the chorus was more interesting & less repetitive droning

first time i heard "Moment 4 Life" on the radio i only heard the Drake verse and thought it was his song, and i was like who the fuck is singing this hook? maybe Chrisette Michele on a really really bad day?
― some dude, Monday, 17 January 2011 23:13 (thirteen years ago) link
i really like nicki's first verse in "moment 4 life" but the chorus starts to sink it and drake's verse finishes it off

also v. disappointed the string of F1 rhymes doesn't go for "You need some help... F1"

"did it on em" is incredible, sometimes you just have to give in to the grocery bag. U AIN'T MY SON U MY MUHFUKKIN STEPSON
right now i kind of think "super bass" might be the most perfect bubblegum rap pop song - really no wonder taylor swift and selena gomez were so taken by that one particularly

i can't tell if "did it on em" is worse on the radio because 40% of the words are bleeped out, or is better on the radio because 40% of the words are bleeped out

altho i will give it to nicki, pissing on your children would be pretty disrespectful
the beat seems so spare, and not in a good 'ether' kind of way either

"Did It On Em" is a totally mediocre mixtape song but compared to most of Nicki's other hits (and "Roman's Revenge" if j0rdan is still pretending that's a hit) it's kinda dope.
"Bed Rock" is a landmark piece of shit but it 'works' on some level that most stupid Young Money songs don't
