ACTRESS - GHETTOVILLE (WERK DISCS)
not partic anticipating, can't get into his stuff
APPARAT - THE DEVIL'S WALK (MUTE)
heard this, it's ok
BJORK - BIOPHILIA (ONE LITTLE INDIAN)
the three tracks i've heard are underwhelming and the whole ~multimedia~ ~app~ thing is tremendously offputting
COOLY G - TITLE TBC (HYPERDUB)
yup, hyped
DJ SHADOW - THE LESS YOU KNOW THE BETTER (ISLAND)
this ain't 1996
DRAKE - TAKE CARE (YOUNG MONEY / UNIVERSAL MOTOWN)
kmt
THE-DREAM - L.IV (DIARY OF A MADMAN) (DEF JAM)
radiokillaaaaaaaaa! my expectations are somewhat tempered but i'm still looking fwd, will drop everything to d/l it when it leaks
THE DRUMS - PORTAMENTO (MOSHI MOSHI / ISLAND)
these people are terrible wtf
FLORENCE & THE MACHINE - TITLE TBC (ISLAND)
hahahahahahahaha i'll stick to "damn i wish i was your lover" thanks
JOKER - THE VISION (4AD)
kinda felt the single with jessie ware wasn't all it could have been, guess i'm still anticipating but i don't expect anything to blow my brains out like "gully brook lane" did all those years ago
JUSTICE - AUDIO, VIDEO, DISCO (ED BANGER)
fuck off
L-VIS 1990 - NEON DREAMS (PMR)
yes!
MARTYN - GHOST PEOPLE (BRAINFEEDER)
i guess so
MATTHEW HERBERT - ONE PIG (ACCIDENTAL)
smh
RUSTIE - GLASS SWORDS (WARP)
this album is AMAZING!!!! i wasn't expecting it to be so good but it really is awesome
SANTIGOLD - TITLE TBC (WARNER)
i liked the single with karen o but not as much as the singles off her first album
SULLY - CARRIER (KEYSOUND)
yeah i guess
THEO PARRISH - UGLY EDITS (SOUND SIGNATURE)
yes, definitely
TOM WAITS - BAD AS ME (ANTI/EPITAPH)
i liked the single until the self-parodic vocals came in - i guess i'll still give it a listen though
THE WEEKND- ECHOES OF SILENCE (SELF-RELEASED)
I WILL KILL YOU

ACTRESS - GHETTOVILLE (WERK DISCS)Hey cool, I didn't know about this! I'm still getting into the last one. He was VERY techno-y at Field Day, so maybe this will go in that direction.
JOKER - THE VISION (4AD)Yep, interested!
ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER - REPLICA (SOFTWARE)This guy is just a little too prolific maybe? I only feel like I've scraped the surface of his previous works.
SULLY - CARRIER (KEYSOUND)I've heard it, it's nice - somewhere between dubstep, garage and footwork. And then after rinsing the album for a couple of weeks, I found out it's an old friend of mine.
TOM WAITS - BAD AS ME (ANTI/EPITAPH)Well, duh, of course I'm looking forward to it. But I'd rather hear a new direction. I enjoyed Real Gone, but I do prefer his other styles more than the raggedy blues stuff he's been doing these last few years.

Lex, you have me interested in the Rustie album. The last thing I heard by him didn't do much for me, but it showed potential.
― Sonny Chevrotain (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 13:59 (thirteen years ago) link
so I'm the only one who loves how dated Bjork's new singles are, then?
― beemer douchebag (DJP), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 13:59 (thirteen years ago) link
Have not heard the new singles - are they like 1993ish?
― kkvgz, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:04 (thirteen years ago) link
i don't think it's nec that they sound "dated" as such, though they do sound like they could have come from any recording session she did over the past decade - they just don't hook me with their, uh, hooks. or lack of. judgment not set in stone, maybe they'll sound better in album context, but they're just a bit...forgettable

What do you call it when you're over-generous with your time on something you don't like, but you want to learn to 'appreciate'? As in you've read five Murakami novels even though he's your least favourite? Or when you earmark a recipe for kohlrabi because you're determined to enjoy kohlrabi one day? Anyway I'll be listening to that Actress record, a lot, probably.

I like the clips from the Bjork record that I've heard. Nice vocal 'sound', less sibilant, lower in the mix. Excited for Cooly G and Theo Parrish. Have no idea about Rustie but love the clip above.

ugly edits are all old although I guess it would be nice to have them in one place. That cant be an official release can it?

You have to be in a very very very dozy state of mind to truly appreciate that Actress album. Only then can the mindworms start weaving their magic. Or something.
― Sonny Chevrotain (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:46 (thirteen years ago) link
At least, I really like the first track, the one that's supposedly based on Erotic City.
Hubble - that's it
oh really, as in it samples erotic city?

awesome track btw

oh god, all the time with acts i love in the first place - is it worse when it doesn't pay off, and you feel like you've wasted all that time, or when it kind of pays off but, you suspect, only cuz you gave it those 940339 chances that you wouldn't have given to anyone else
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:48 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah!
Man, Splazsh should come w a how-to guide. I get told how to listen to it as often as I get people telling me I should try acupuncture
― Ópen W. (Ówen P.), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:49 (thirteen years ago) link
I like Actress because it's house music for dimensions with different physical parameters to our own. Or something...
'Hubble' is apparently a "study" of 'Erotic City'. I tried playing them back to back, and really there's little similarity, but at the same time I can kind of understand this. Something about the jitter - the groove in there.

I'll listen to anything new by Actress and Cooly G tbh
the Martyn album is good, I think, but he is definitely down the (loosely dubby) techno rabbithole more than anything now

last time i spoke to someone IRL he started telling me about how to listen to actress as well - he even started talking about deleuze & fkn guattari as part of this stupid guide, at which point i tuned him out and may have actually wandered off mid-conversation. can't be doing with stupid people.
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:54 (thirteen years ago) link
Some of these people make records I might be interested in, but have no real desire for there to be albums by any of them. I realize this is my issue but whenever i think of the word album, i think "track wasn't good enough to release by itself"
I have no real feelings about Herbert either way (in 2011), but why the smh, lex?
― post, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 14:54 (thirteen years ago) link
Actually I don't give a shit about the rest of the Actress album, but Hubble is great. It reminds me of this experimental track I made in Reason that's largely based on semi-generative ideas but comes off sounding like the world's most complex 8-bit video game.

God forbid anyone try to explain why they like a record...?
― Sonny Chevrotain (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:01 (thirteen years ago) link
rustie is great....the anti-actress
The second scenario is worse, because at least with the first you can decisively say "NOPE" and move on. The second leads to this vortex of indecision combined with the dead dullness of a weak response to something you really want to like, which leads to overthinking your feelings about a record, which further damages your ability to truly respond to it... I've gotten better over the past year or so with differentiating between the "meh" of indecision and the "hmm" of indecision; the "meh" rarely results in me coming around to a record (so I'm less inclined to spend lots of time with it), but the "hmm" often means something will eventually click.
― Clarke B., Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:03 (thirteen years ago) link
that is like academic or beard-stroking intellectual analysis
fwiw I like splazsh and to a lesser extent the first actress record and my greatest enjoyment of them comes from the times I think as little as possible and crank up the volume
