wtf @ "shades" love - i mean it's not unlistenable, and justin's verse is kind of mesmerizing even if it's objectively evil, but of all the songs??

90% for the "Woah!!!! What you gonna do when I'm perfect for you??" multitracked pinnacles. But I do love JT's sub-Drake verse too.

It's kind of the most Last Train To Paris moment on Last Train To Paris.

Shades is fun. JT's grocery bags are at least forgivable because they aren't done in earnest as a serious rap. whereas Drake/Weezy/kayne and company I can picture leaning back and going "whoAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" after every hashtag they toss out

'someone to love me' is dope is that the one whiney liked

lighten up -- the marmalade thing is hysterical and a huge part of why that song is good

the dirty money verses are my favourite things about "ass on the floor", i think - i love the tension, that slightly drunk "i'm about to do something really fucking stupid" feeling (which turns out to be giving her soul up in that super-pretty bridge)

also the slight shift from "now i'm drunker than a motherfucker, tryna find my way back to your heart you motherfucker" in the first verse to "got me madder than a motherfucker, tryna fight my way back to your heart you motherfucker" in the second is perfect

are dead prez in the credits for "hate you now" or did diddy just thief the "hip hop" beat, incidentally? (think it works really well whichever way)

^^ yeah, I highlighted that part awhile ago - I really love it because 1.) it kinda encapsulates the vibes of a nightclub so perfectly, as a place where people go and prevaricate and stop at nothing to get what they want - including treating heavy concepts like true love* with careless abandon 2.) the last two lines are a perfect summation of weezy's m.o. as a rapper

*of course, I don't actually think anybody is really hurt by this - I can't imagine whatever girl weezy is saying this too actually thinks weezy means what he says - it's all part of the game

I also love the stage metaphor because it highlights the performative aspect of being at a nightclub

tnx - to expand on the second point i like the faux-humble aspect of it. it's like weezy is taking the schoolyard argument of 'what's the big deal, they're just words' and applying it to himself - but of course he knows how powerful words are, he's hyperaware, but he's hiding in this defense of 'I just put words together'

the talkbox at the end of "your love" <3 <3 <3 didn't even notice it til this week - i love the climax, male/female/digitised voices all intertwining w/each other.

i caned this album this week cuz i had to do a review of it, and in most cases when that happens i feel a bit sick afterwards, like i've overdosed on the album and can't go back to it for a couple of weeks - not the case here, i was finding it completely fresh and exciting right up until i filed.
