is lex the only one to vote for pink friday?

that was a bit of a "real talk" vote - i was as dismissive as anyone when it came out (not so much disappointed cuz i expected how watered down it'd be - or seem, anyway) - i'm just not going to front on how much i came back to a lot of that album, esp with the bonus tracks, and how GREAT it is when it's good

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

i mean sure the rah digga album, say, is "better", but at the same time there's nothing on it that's clocking up the last.fm scrobbles a tenth as much as the best stuff on pink friday

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

sisilafami, Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

zvookster, Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

i tried to listen to danny brown's mixtape before the album and it was boring as fuck tbh

zvookster, Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

The Gangrene album is another good one I got on too late.

yes, alphabetically.

I think danny brown's personality is the opposite of boring

sisilafami, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

gangrene was on a whiney ballot

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

well it was just a cursory listen, to some of detroit state of mind 4, so u cld be right. i think i'd confused him with someone else in my head and was expecting something diff

zvookster, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

na'tee is incredible but that mixtape is an old school definition of a mixtape, im not sure she even really reinvents any songs on it -- shes just a great rapper
looking forward to new shit from her tho

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

lol @ premo's first record to get 5 mics since... life after death? coming at the butt end of his list.

"jobs" (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

honest question: does "5 mics" still mean anything? i have no idea.

gr8080, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck 5 mics, I'd rather have... a fan base I could tour form?

dunno if you noticed (prob not) but i thought it was pretty lol #shotsfired that tom b. at pfork gave bun's album 5/10 after the source gave it 5 mics

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

'the number was right, its just the scale that was off'

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

i guess thats what i mean-- like does anyone give a shit what the source has to say anymore

gr8080, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

does anyone give a shit what the source anyone has to say anymore

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

is this the real life
is this just fantasy

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno what whiney's point is, but in terms of editorial direction, no one cares what teh source has to say no

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

but like do dudes still rap about being the "next 5 mics" and shit is what i'm asking

gr8080, Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:10 (fifteen years ago)

well maybe, but only as a metaphor for "give me my credit" or w/e -- rappers don't actually care about the source/critics & there are really no influential rap critics right now

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

critics now are more influential in creating/forming a narrative or pushing an unknown artist -- i.e. noz w/ lil b or xxl w/ their freshman stuff -- but no critic/publication can affect an actual album/mixtape

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

i'm like mike, the greatest i need five mics
and five dykes to sit next to me fight night

flopson, Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

^^

J0rdan S., Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

five dykes more helpful than five mics in that scenario.

Tim F, Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

unless he means five men named mike

flopson, Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:57 (fifteen years ago)

fuck 5 i want a hundred and eight mics

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

yo son

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 8 January 2011 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

i thought the rap up's were played out, esp. when he stopped going over a hit which was part of the whole point. that said, it's kind of a return to form this year imo so

Mr. Pookie & Mr. Lucci - 10th Anniversary - The Classic

i have this & still havent had a chance to listen

ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

i like it alot obv...but yeah i don't know my list is def more "this is what i felt like listening to this year" than "this defines the year" kinda stuff...

one album on there in particular i was too chicken to even mention on ilx lol

mekka lekka hi mega-hiney hoes (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

Nineteen Ninety Nerd?

President Keyes, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

hahahah no dessa, basically it's like "jagged little pill" for a generation of girlz that grew up on atmosphere

actually found out about that celph/buck thru the goon thread

mekka lekka hi mega-hiney hoes (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

Dessa from Doomtree? Post the best track, I would be interested in hearing it, tbqphaf

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

u def posted abt dessa btw

zvookster, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

ah good! i can't remember all this shit i post tbh

yep dessa from doomtree, it's def (like i said) a lot more singer/songwriter type stuff than straight up hip hop

i like this one a lot, probably my fav

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-v9Ej8rkxE&feature=related

some of it's more singing style like this, my pal jess produced the music for this track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK8Jys3K6rI&feature=related

and finally i like this one alot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSxSCv7Cegc&feature=related

aaaanyway, this is all i guess corny and about as far from goon approved jams as possible, but i dunno, i ended up liking it a lot

mekka lekka hi mega-hiney hoes (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

saw DJ Premier nominate Ice Cube's "I am the West". I'd heard similar good comments on it, even though nobody said it was like amazing or anything.

after first listen, I'm bored to tears. dude just likes to throw up half-assed quick little verses and then run annoying choruses into the ground now.

mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

i really enjoyed it the first listen and then... never felt inclined to listen to it ever again.

"jobs" (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 09:59 (fifteen years ago)

Ok, so far Marcberg is awesome.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 07:58 (fifteen years ago)

I like some low-key menace in my NYC rap, I do.
