The thing is, there's only so much I can listen to Odd Future, too. It's the same reason I was never into Slim Shady LP-era Eminem, or songs like "Kim" (which I detest); much like Lex, that aesthetic just doesn't do much for me. I love a lot of Odd Future stuff, but I never play it over and over, if that makes sense.

you're the one who posted the gangster rap is more offensive because they're more sincere which is clearly absurd
man yr reading comprehension failure rate never fails to astound

also just wanna say that youth was also important to jerk, and it's not like no one ever mentioned the youth element of various emergent cultures. and this is rather like jerk was produced by one group of teens, crewing up like teens do, with whatever youthful virtues of energy & fun & etc. and with sophisticated raps & technical chops, which jerk was always (charmingly?) deficient in. so i guess 1) it's not like youth wasn't important to jerk 2) there are unsurprising reasons ppl mention they are kids from time to time
― zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:42 (fifteen years ago)
But I mean, at the same time, when ISN'T youth important to music, period?
― rihanna rennavated my dick (rennavate), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:43 (fifteen years ago)
OK GUYS all the quivering vaginas re: OF go in the OF thread

what kind of question is this
― assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:44 (fifteen years ago)
it's important to varying degrees, and is usually mentioned in rough proportionality to those degrees
― zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:45 (fifteen years ago)
if you still can't decide whether murder fantasies are for you, raise your hand so i can chop it off

zvookster otm. youth isn't really important/relevant to, say, the mid-70s work of Willie Nelson.

let's talk about how good the jacka/laroo album is
and this is rather like jerk was produced by one group of teens, crewing up like teens do, with whatever youthful virtues of energy & fun & etc. and with sophisticated raps & technical chops, which jerk was always (charmingly?) deficient in
i guess the biggest difference is class - not social class but, y'know, what ~type~ of kids the jerk kids were vs. the odd future kids - ie kids who love dancing, dressing up, chatting shit about sex and status, vs. kids who like being gross and watching jackass
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:47 (fifteen years ago)
jerk kids def seem more well-adjusted heheh
― zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:48 (fifteen years ago)
kids who love dancing, dressing up, chatting shit about sex and status, vs. kids who like being gross and watching jackass
this is like some silly T/S teenage girls vs. teenage boys dichotomy
― assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:49 (fifteen years ago)
chatting shit about sex and status
tbh i'd much rather have talked about "gross" than "status" at any age in my life, sex always tho
― one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:50 (fifteen years ago)
jacka/laroo album is really good and i think anyone would like it not just rap-heads

― ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:51 (fifteen years ago)
so addicted to picking out the organ in this
jacka & laroo "about me"
― zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:51 (fifteen years ago)
i dunno, i was not well-adjusted at that age, to say the least. like... i would definitely been more likely to hang out with the of kids than the jerks.
― i don't even vacuum, i'm roomba pimpin (The Reverend), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:51 (fifteen years ago)
i liked jacka/laroo a lot because i think there is a perfect balance there -- be it laroo or andre nickatina, i think jacka's style works best when it's overtly contrasting someone more deep voiced/typical
― J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:51 (fifteen years ago)
we were specifically discussing why it was important that they were young, don't be a dick
― zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:52 (fifteen years ago)
would have derided the jerks as the fucking popular kids.
― i don't even vacuum, i'm roomba pimpin (The Reverend), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:52 (fifteen years ago)
so addicted to picking out the organ
sounds like an odd future lyric
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:52 (fifteen years ago)
the jacka & laroo was one of those records where the first track started and i just thought, oh i am gonna love this
― zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:53 (fifteen years ago)
^^^lol perhaps the ILX Heathers thread is relevant here
― assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:54 (fifteen years ago)
i would def have identified more w/ odd future socially but jerk wd be my aesthetic guilty pleasure

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:54 (fifteen years ago)
i love all the light, airy synths on the jacka & laroo album that make it feel like you're cruising around on a cloud or something - it feels really opulent, but super-casual too. one of those albums i had to rebuy just for the higher quality.
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
shakey: what is that?
― i don't even vacuum, i'm roomba pimpin (The Reverend), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
lol about what rappers you would have hung out in high school. they would have probably thought you were all fucking dorks
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
yay, another one of my picks. glad that did well.
i love how suddenly the album starts! like, BANG just straight into this sweet, sweet chorus

okay I don't know why I dismissed Odd Future based on the way you guys talked about them before, but based on you all essentially being like "they're like a young black better version of ICP" here I looked up "Orange Juice" and holy shit I should have been up on this earlier
― Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:01 (fifteen years ago)
also the energy on SO FUCK AROUND AND POP OFF FOR YOUR WHOLE TOWN~~
there's a thread on ILX right now about the movie Heathers (the central plot of which involves gruesomely murders of the popular kids)
