Uh oh. Here's Xgau:
Big Boi: Sir Lucious Left Foot . . . The Son of Chico Dusty (Def Jam)
Last things first: I wish I could never again hear the jocularly misogynist David Blaine skit at the ass end of "General Patton" in my entire life. But it's not tracked, so insofar as the pervasive albeit incoherent musicality of this overrated good album calls me back, it will always be there to waylay me. Granted, so will a succession of enjoyable songs with plenty to offer. But direct comparison to any post-Aquemini OutKast establishes not Andre's superiority‑-that's ambition and always has been‑-but the congruence of two timbres and deliveries that resembled each other far more than did the big boys who put them across. I feel the juice of Big Boi's "dark fudge brownie with the nut of your choice" and cheer when he mocks "coke-ayena." But without OutKast's synergy, few of his many good moves are slam dunks. "Like a crocodile walking round with alligator skin"? Couldn't have said it better myself. A MINUS

that's like the first published review of this album that confesses to missing Andre, isn't it?

whoever sauid dre & big boi are like the lennon /mccartney of rap where they are ok and clearly talented dudes on their own but need to complete each other's thoughts to be really genius otm

i feel guilty saying this, but i look forward to big boi solo album #2 more than a new outkast album ;_;

also, xgau: the david blaine skit doesn't come across as misogynist to me. i mean, doesn't it go, "...when you're fuckin a girl from the back, or somebody from the back, right" -- i mean, if it's misogynist, it's also conceding that the maneuver can be used on men, too, right?
― slouching, unshaven, thick-necked, unstylish, pig-eyed (ilxor), Saturday, 1 January 2011 21:14 (fifteen years ago)
it's "fucking YOUR girl from the back, or somebody from the back"; that's clearly a no homo line
― predeep natsvitika (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 1 January 2011 21:43 (fifteen years ago)
ehhh i dont buy that 100%
― slouching, unshaven, thick-necked, unstylish, pig-eyed (ilxor), Saturday, 1 January 2011 21:44 (fifteen years ago)
me neither. and it's way too totally self-incriminatingly stoopit to really come across as significantly misogynist, at least from where i sit. no more so than several lines in each of the songs xgau says he likes...

it seems a weird combination to me, i wouldn't really want to fuck when i was on mdma even if i could achieve erection (tmi). obviously physiology differs from person to person vastly, i've known people who want to start fights when they're on mdma instead of getting all empathetic.

went to see Big Boi last night..... total cost: $65.... $25 tickets (with fees.... 2x).... $15 bar tab..... and then Big Boi played for, uh, 20 minutes?? setlist: The Way You Move, Shutterbugg, Kryptonite, Tangerine, Follow Us (excerpt), Daddy Fat Sax (excerpt)..... and then he exited the stage while the DJ played "B.O.B." over the system. fun 20 minutes, but easily the worst value for $$$ i've ever paid for a show.
― i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Sunday, 18 September 2011 01:54 (fourteen years ago)
yeah that seems like par for the course for most club shows by mainstream rappers, although you'd like to think Big Boi would be too good for that kind of bullshit
― some dude, Sunday, 18 September 2011 01:57 (fourteen years ago)
My experience seeing Sleigh Bells (recently, not pre-LP release) was roughly the same. 20minutes equated to about 30minutes of them actually being on-stage. GREAT show, but it was like they didn't even breathe in between songs
my worst was seeing Mister Heavenly. 18 MINUTE SET.
― Hullo, I'm Jon Moss (kelpolaris), Sunday, 18 September 2011 02:04 (fourteen years ago)
ugh, wtf, i meant
"50 bucks equated to about 30minutes of them actually being on-stage"
but we did get to see somethingsomething w/ spanish name (leather jacket, big jew fro, elvis swagger... anyone know what i'm talking about) and neon indian. both which i left and smoked cigs for, but i tend to think my tickets also sport themselves bar covers
― Hullo, I'm Jon Moss (kelpolaris), Sunday, 18 September 2011 02:06 (fourteen years ago)
well, there are newish bands with one album who you can't really expect to play that long no matter what you paid to see them, and then there are guys with hundreds of songs they could've played doing like 6 of them.
― some dude, Sunday, 18 September 2011 02:10 (fourteen years ago)
then Big Boi played for, uh, 20 minutes??

― symsymsym, Sunday, 18 September 2011 03:04 (fourteen years ago)
The Joy Formidable show recently was short but then again, one album, a couple of EPs, etc. And it worked great, wouldn't change a thing about it.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 18 September 2011 03:24 (fourteen years ago)
I used to favor short sets because of artsy asshole theoretical concerns but once your ticket price goes above a certain level - say, twenty bones - you should check yourself and put the fuck out imo. working people paid to get in, if you're headlining don't work at least eighty solid minutes you're kind of a dick imo
― pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 18 September 2011 03:45 (fourteen years ago)
that should say: headlining and you don't work at least eighty solid minutes
In other news, Outkast just signed to Epic, where they'll be reunited with LA Reid.
― skrillex pretend (The Reverend), Sunday, 18 September 2011 03:49 (fourteen years ago)
w/ the sleigh bells concert, i was hoping they'd give us a peak at some new material or play some stuff off their EPs to fill gaps... which i was actually genuinely convinced was going to happen (the former) considering the seeming lack of reason for going on tour
anyway, resumebigboi

well see that's the thing.. i saw him earlier this year, good 60-70 min set, about half & half outkast vs. solo material, really good & fun show all around, just enough to leave me wanting more. so i told my wife, hey, let's see big boi, he's back 6 months later and it will be real good! so we shelled out $50 and sat around for 2 hours and then dude came on for 20 min and left... none of the same vibe or enthusiasm as the show i saw alone.
― i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Sunday, 18 September 2011 05:38 (fourteen years ago)
saw him a few weeks ago and it was 60-70 mins. for 80 bucks he could have played a lot longer but tbf he did cram about 920 songs into that time.

yeah i think a real shitty part of this is the build-up/wind down, as much as the limitations of the show itself. like i entertain thoughts of short shows, think that there is a theoretical half-hour set that is a perfect fit with our frazzled attention spans, flexes respectable variety in its picks but also gets to careen wildly from one thing to the next riding high on energy, & can imagine that a high-energy half hour would be a blast that people might not necessarily feel cheated by (bc it is nice when shows aren't 'they played both of my favourite songs!' or 'i wish they'd played creep' but 'we all had a wild & communicative time in that room it was musical'). BUT i kinda feel some of that might be contingent on the preceding hours not being the usual ritual of just waiting & standing & queueing & a guy walking past and putting his hand on your back & you are carrying your stupid bag & you wish you could be at home checking your e-mail. a real bill - not even a bill, just djs!, or whatever, distractions, a support act you give a shit about - would go some way towards depleting the 'quantity = value' proportionality of shows imo.

― moonshit journey to caca (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 18 September 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)
sometimes it is good to just leave. an hour and a half is a long period over which to have a kind of 'arc', also.

I honestly cant do much more than 45 min withou gtting antsy

well but Whiney yr attn span isn't exactly legendary
― pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 18 September 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)
not an insult btw, don't you kind of take pride in your short attention span
imo set lengths are like movie running times -- obviously sometimes a little goes a long way and sometimes you're happy to be there for a couple hours or more. but i definitely agree with underrated that once you're a headliner people pay a certain amount to see, you gotta put some work in.
