I actually spent so much time talking/thinking about it that I thought I must have cracked and voted for it but I just checked my ballot and no.

Groke, Friday, 17 December 2010 09:52 (thirteen years ago) link

The John Grant album is the one that's come out of nowhere for me, never heard of it before.

17= Anaïs Mitchell Hadestown

Never heard of this either. What is it?

The Ikonika album is good but I can't help but feel that the Guido album is better and would play better with Guardian readers. Respect for voting Love King so high though.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 09:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, the Anais Mitchell album appears to be a recording of a "folk opera" on Righteous Babe records described as "the story of Orpheus and Eurydice set in post-apocalyptic Depression-era America." Sounds kind of ludicrous but probably more interesting than another placing for Deerhunter.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 09:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Matt DC, I don't know how many critics are polled but it must be a fair number because neither Tom, Lex nor I voted for Kanye. I'm surprised by the same placings as you - not even heard of Anais Mitchell and found the Ikonika record very dull. But then it's good to be surprised by your own publication. Would never have predicted the National coming below Drake and Kelis.

Anyone else think it's a bit weird P4K putting three James Blake EPs in their albums list? It's not an album is it?

Obvious from ScottPl's #1 earlier that was going to happen. Doing that and having a tracks rundown and not singles is a bit of a case of cake being had and eaten.

Art Department - Without You

That's an odd number one, it's a good record but kinda... 2002? Still, it's a nice mix of stuff I already know and like and enough tunes I haven't actually heard. No idea what Skeng is doing in there though.

^^YES

why is "skeng" in a 2010 list lol. i'm sure "reckless (with your love)" was 2009, too. and actually i prefer oni ayhun's 003.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Reckless With Your Love is actually the placing for the Tensnake mix rather than the original.

For all the fuss about dubstep or post-dubstep or whatever, Coma Cat still feels like the 2010's big undisputible dancefloor anthem, happy to see it so high.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 11:11 (thirteen years ago) link

28. Tony Lionni feat. Marvin Belton - Precious
26. Space Dimension Controller - Journey to the Core of the Unknown Sphere

These two are fantastic as well. Tony Lionni is such a great producer.

'Skeng' = Autechre remix from that recent EP? (this might not totally refute your point lol)

Different Geir, Still SBing (DJ Mencap), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:14 (thirteen years ago) link

That Autechre mix of SKENG is one of my favourite tracks of the year.

Ha. I also like this one:

this is a very guardiany list. A mix of hotly tipped new bands, world music and commercial junk, to alienate no one at all. Very indecisive.

Yeah, what indecisive bastards, liking a whole range of music.

A lot of the albums up there will be forgotten in a few years time. I'd go further to say that perhaps 2010 was a poor year for music. Is there anything up there you can safely say will become legendary?

amazing

Has Gaslight Anthem not placed anywhere yet?

Mordy, Friday, 17 December 2010 11:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Gaslight Anthem placed at #2 in Kerrrang. Album is DULL though, too much mid-paced chuntering.

The idea of Los Campesinos becoming "legendary" in any context is almost so ridiculous as to not be worth a response.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 11:46 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost to Lex. That guy seems to have confused an end of year albums list with The History of the World in 100 Objects.

i know dude and lold myself. was thinking more classic than legendary. owen p has a sword and a cape on his album cover, p legends of the relm type thing going on

btw lex did you attempt listening to the pallett? it is about as un-indie as a white boy indie album can get, and its v. pretty

this is the extent of my interaction with o.pallett, sam: http://www.thesinglesjukebox.com/?p=2074

god i loathe los campesinos. as i was saying to alex o on fb the other day, i feel even more hatred for them because one of them was music editor of the university magazine THAT I FOUNDED. i feel like i might have inadvertently nurtured them and the consequent guilt is, i imagine, similar to that of a parent who discovers their child has grown up to be a serial sex offender.

LOL. Indeed. There's nothing more dispiriting than seeing these whining canonical UNCUT readers in training. They're more depressing than Young Conservatives.

That RA list is probably my favourite so far this year, but I'm with lex - Oni Ayhun's OAR-003B (why couldn't these tracks have easier names?) has sounded perfect in every context I've heard it or played it in this year.

Lol at all the Guardian comments complaining about how low the National placed. Ultimately I tend to agree with the old boring line that there's no accounting for taste. I have trouble imagining even liking the National (though perhaps I shouldn't since it mostly sounds to me like a third rate version of the post-punk I used to enjoy).

did a double take there because a Baltimore band that released one of my favorite local albums this year is called The Art Department. i guess it figures someone else has used that name, though, hope they don't have to change it!

let me be the first to guess at the pfork top ten without seeing anything in the top 50 or honorable mentions list, mostly based on the trax list, album rankings, and a few other factors:

- kanye west (two tracks in top 10, plus 10.0 rating, obv.)
- ariel pink (#1 track, breakout album, 9.0 rating, major chillwave influence)
- lcd soundsystem (tracks ranked at #3 and #12, 9.2 rating)
- robyn (best "pop" track of 2010, endless pfork hype, three highly rated albums/EPs)
- big boi (#5 track, most highly praised "actual hip-hop/rap" album of 2010 [kanye doesnt count])
- joanna newsom (#6 track, 9.0+ rating [9.2 maybe?])
- janelle monae (#10 track, "cold war" hot as well, most highly praised r&b album of 2010 while not being "traditional r&b")
- deerhunter (not sure why this got a 9.2, but it has two trax in top 30-40-ish area, incl. #11)

plus, two of the following three, making 10 total:

- beach house (another couple highly ranked trax, 9.0 rating, breakout album for a band pfork's been hyping for years)
- sleigh bells ("best new debut album") -- though this could fall in 11-15 and i wouldn't be surprised
- titus andronicus (great/praised album by an "albums band" despite no track in the top 15 or so)

8 outta 10 not bad, huh?

shame i didn't foresee pfork putting the three James Blake EPs together as an "album" (seems kinda lame, though), and obviously, someone pointed out vampire weekend missing from my list almost immediately

Krishnan Guru-Murthy's top 10 albums of 2010

1 Plastic Beach, Gorillaz
2 Progress, Take That
3 Recovery, Eminem
4 Come Around Sundown, Kings Of Leon
5 Body Talk, Robyn
6 The Lady Killer, Cee Lo Green
7 Wake Up The Nation, Paul Weller
8 Glee 1, The Glee Cast
9 Contra, Vampire Weekend
10 High Violet, The National

So, I lost track of this thread a few days ago, and maybe this has already been talked about. But yesterday I noticed and slightly skimmed this end-of-year Village Voice "SOTC Roundtable" called "Was 2010 The Best Year For Music Ever," and I'm confused....That headline's just a joke, right? Or are there people out there who actually believe that?
