Funny how various commenters say that the Guardian list is so much worse than the NME or Pitchfork ones when, let's face it, about half the entries are exactly the same. When you've been reading this thread for the last few weeks the same names just shuffle around.

dorian i'm about to embark on the john grant album! i'll let you know how it goes.
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 17 December 2010 09:38 (fifteen years ago)
I voted for 6 in the Guardian 40. Hot Chip/These New Puritans/John Grant near the top, and Ali & Toumani/Glasser/I Am Kloot near the bottom.
― mike t-diva, Friday, 17 December 2010 09:46 (fifteen years ago)
I thought the Guardian music team spent about two weeks being vocally underwhelmed en masse by the Kanye record so I'm genuinely surprised to see it turn up so high.
― Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 09:50 (fifteen years ago)
I actually spent so much time talking/thinking about it that I thought I must have cracked and voted for it but I just checked my ballot and no.
― Groke, Friday, 17 December 2010 09:52 (fifteen years ago)
The John Grant album is the one that's come out of nowhere for me, never heard of it before.
17= Anaïs Mitchell Hadestown
Never heard of this either. What is it?
The Ikonika album is good but I can't help but feel that the Guido album is better and would play better with Guardian readers. Respect for voting Love King so high though.
― Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 09:53 (fifteen years ago)
Oh, the Anais Mitchell album appears to be a recording of a "folk opera" on Righteous Babe records described as "the story of Orpheus and Eurydice set in post-apocalyptic Depression-era America." Sounds kind of ludicrous but probably more interesting than another placing for Deerhunter.
― Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 09:57 (fifteen years ago)
Matt DC, I don't know how many critics are polled but it must be a fair number because neither Tom, Lex nor I voted for Kanye. I'm surprised by the same placings as you - not even heard of Anais Mitchell and found the Ikonika record very dull. But then it's good to be surprised by your own publication. Would never have predicted the National coming below Drake and Kelis.
Anyone else think it's a bit weird P4K putting three James Blake EPs in their albums list? It's not an album is it?

Obvious from ScottPl's #1 earlier that was going to happen. Doing that and having a tracks rundown and not singles is a bit of a case of cake being had and eaten.

Aww bless. I like Janelle much more than I like her album, really hope she goes on to make an honest-to-god classic.

Art Department - Without You
That's an odd number one, it's a good record but kinda... 2002? Still, it's a nice mix of stuff I already know and like and enough tunes I haven't actually heard. No idea what Skeng is doing in there though.

^^YES
why is "skeng" in a 2010 list lol. i'm sure "reckless (with your love)" was 2009, too. and actually i prefer oni ayhun's 003.
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:09 (fifteen years ago)
Reckless With Your Love is actually the placing for the Tensnake mix rather than the original.
For all the fuss about dubstep or post-dubstep or whatever, Coma Cat still feels like the 2010's big undisputible dancefloor anthem, happy to see it so high.
― Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 11:11 (fifteen years ago)
28. Tony Lionni feat. Marvin Belton - Precious26. Space Dimension Controller - Journey to the Core of the Unknown Sphere
These two are fantastic as well. Tony Lionni is such a great producer.

'Skeng' = Autechre remix from that recent EP? (this might not totally refute your point lol)
― Different Geir, Still SBing (DJ Mencap), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:14 (fifteen years ago)
That Autechre mix of SKENG is one of my favourite tracks of the year.
― Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:17 (fifteen years ago)
ha no I do like it, still doesn't feel like a *SONG OF 2010* to me tho
I think ILM may find this apparently earnest post from Drowned In Sound amusing
― Different Geir, Still SBing (DJ Mencap), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:27 (fifteen years ago)
Ha. I also like this one:
this is a very guardiany list. A mix of hotly tipped new bands, world music and commercial junk, to alienate no one at all. Very indecisive.
Yeah, what indecisive bastards, liking a whole range of music.

A lot of the albums up there will be forgotten in a few years time. I'd go further to say that perhaps 2010 was a poor year for music. Is there anything up there you can safely say will become legendary?
amazing
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:38 (fifteen years ago)

shame owen p has never joined in wdyll for an easy zing, but i genuinely think that dude made a classic. also los camp (lol me & jordan)

Has Gaslight Anthem not placed anywhere yet?
― Mordy, Friday, 17 December 2010 11:44 (fifteen years ago)
Gaslight Anthem placed at #2 in Kerrrang. Album is DULL though, too much mid-paced chuntering.
The idea of Los Campesinos becoming "legendary" in any context is almost so ridiculous as to not be worth a response.
― Matt DC, Friday, 17 December 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)
xpost to Lex. That guy seems to have confused an end of year albums list with The History of the World in 100 Objects.

And huge thanks to I am using your worlds for the Spotify playlist. I've been doing so much EOY listening already that I just gave up when I got to the RA list.
― The baby boomers have defined everything once and for all (Dorianlynskey), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:48 (fifteen years ago)
i know dude and lold myself. was thinking more classic than legendary. owen p has a sword and a cape on his album cover, p legends of the relm type thing going on
btw lex did you attempt listening to the pallett? it is about as un-indie as a white boy indie album can get, and its v. pretty
― irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:48 (fifteen years ago)
ok he doesn't have a sword, must have remembered it rong

this is the extent of my interaction with o.pallett, sam: http://www.thesinglesjukebox.com/?p=2074
god i loathe los campesinos. as i was saying to alex o on fb the other day, i feel even more hatred for them because one of them was music editor of the university magazine THAT I FOUNDED. i feel like i might have inadvertently nurtured them and the consequent guilt is, i imagine, similar to that of a parent who discovers their child has grown up to be a serial sex offender.
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 17 December 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)
LOL. Indeed. There's nothing more dispiriting than seeing these whining canonical UNCUT readers in training. They're more depressing than Young Conservatives.

That RA list is probably my favourite so far this year, but I'm with lex - Oni Ayhun's OAR-003B (why couldn't these tracks have easier names?) has sounded perfect in every context I've heard it or played it in this year.

Lol at all the Guardian comments complaining about how low the National placed. Ultimately I tend to agree with the old boring line that there's no accounting for taste. I have trouble imagining even liking the National (though perhaps I shouldn't since it mostly sounds to me like a third rate version of the post-punk I used to enjoy).

did a double take there because a Baltimore band that released one of my favorite local albums this year is called The Art Department. i guess it figures someone else has used that name, though, hope they don't have to change it!
