It was kinda weird that they played "Give It Away" as their second song on SNL last night. I was looking forward to hearing another song off the new one.

I dunno. I liked it that they didn't do the "we're only here to hawk our new album" that everyone on SNL does.

After all these years, I still kinda like RHCP... One of my fave shows ever was back in '84 or '85 when they played UCI and Anthony didn't show up - so Hillel and Flea grabbed people out of the audience to sing.

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 11 May 2006 20:56 (twenty years ago)

they played that big auditorium at UCI? i too saw them around '85 and i think it was at Fender's in Long Beach (fairly small club).

I have spent 2 hours reading all this, to see what other people think about my favorite band. I've heard that their first two albums are great, and that the other ones suck, well, you know what, like few bands, the red hot chili peppers' music has evolved with the time but it always have something in common, GREATNESS, they are really the best of the best, they love their job they really have passion for music. This week I bought Stadium Arcadium and its pretty cool, it will have a lot of hits, lets see, until now, the best albums are Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication and By the Way. (Not the first cd, those cd didnt make them famous the cd that make them famous was Blood Sugar Sex Magik)...oh and By the way Id try to say i'll be there, waiting for.....

Steve Rodriguez, Thursday, 18 May 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

They're better than you'd think considering their drummer is Will Ferrell.

Jackpot!!!!!! Somebody thought the same as I did

Pedro J., Thursday, 18 May 2006 23:38 (twenty years ago)

gotta say, i am really liking 'stadium arcadium'. it's like the half of 'californication' which was great, sustained over 2 discs.

swvl (vozick), Monday, 22 May 2006 02:45 (twenty years ago)

still maintain that Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic is an incredible album ... you'd probably haev to pay me to listen to the new one but for the first time in about two years I kinda psyched to pull out BSSM as I grill my pork chop. It's definitely due for its bi-annual listen.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 22 May 2006 02:52 (twenty years ago)

I always feel a little sad when I hear them on the radio - hearing "Scar Tissue" on the radio before the rest of that awful album was the last time they seemed capable of doing anything worth listening to. Now it's all ballads and going through the motions.

four weeks pass...
I'm having a hard time with Stadium Arcadium. I'm currently fighting the temptation to shut it off halfway through the first disc like I did the first time I tried listening to it. At least the guitar playing is good.

BSSM is the only album of theirs I've liked all the way through, and I've heard all of them but Mother's Milk and the debut.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Despite the lukewarm songwriting on Stadium Arcadium, it's totally Frusciante's showcase guitar-wise. I'm tempted to say he's never sounded better.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed, the solos are just killer.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 02:55 (nineteen years ago)

'give it away' is a pretty good tune when overheard loud in a bar...but apart from that never dug em . but am currently a bit obsessed with with 'desecration smile' - first song on disc 2 of new album . frusciate has some beautiful licks and b. vocals ( very CSNY) going on

grapple (grapple), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

x-post -- That will NEVER surprise me. He's like Dom Perignon, regrettably paired with horsemeat hash.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 03:00 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a "great guitarist, shit band" thread? There should be.
grapple: I'll listen for that one, I'm currently on track 12 of Jupiter.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 03:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'm having a hard time with Stadium Arcadium.

Hell, I'm having a hard time with the title alone!

Re Frusciante solo work:

A couple of albums recorded in the depth of his heroin/cocaine/cheap motel/no teeth period - painful to listen to, not even amusing in a "Syd Barret/ evesdropping on someone's insanity" kind of way.

"To record only water for ten days" (Pretentious title, granted) is just guitar, vocals and cheap sounding keyboard/ drummachine and it is a totally and utterly classic record.

"Shadows collide with people" is hit and miss but generally hilarious fun, and gets extra points for a a couple of tracks which are basically just beatless electronic droning

Since then (2003) he has released, without exaggerating, about 10 albums and EPs, pretty much all of which is pish.

He's also always namechecking good music in interviews (Joy Division, Gang of Four etc). Seems like a nice fellow, if slightly deranged in a California post drug sort of a way.

iain macdonald (the_article_don), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

found this on wiki re: Mars Volta:

Frusciante has also been working with The Mars Volta in the studio on their new album Amputechture. Band leaders Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala have been quoted saying that Frusciante will have a much larger role in The Mars Volta in the next CD. He also tracked all of the guitar work for the next record by The Mars Volta during the creative process, which allowed Omar to work more as a producer for the album.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 08:37 (nineteen years ago)

cheers iain.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

John Frusciante's recent albums are anyfuckingthing but "pish". Curtains is a very pleasant, organic, folky, rainy day affair (not to mention a monstrous dueling solo bit between Frusciante and Omar Rodriguez). Sphere In The Heart of Silence is like a Kid A where the robots are all rusty and broken instead of all-powerful and shiny, with one of the most awe-inspiringly raw vocal takes of any performance by any rock vocalist ever ("Walls"). Inside of Emptiness is the ill, raunchy rock record most modern rock bands keep trying and failing to make. Each of those 7+ LPs/EPs have a very distinct tone & character from one another.

Shadows Collide With People is still the most magnificent though, most likely.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

I've always thought of TRWF10D as being his "goth" record.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

I wish the Chilis would just kick Anthony Keidis out.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

And there are some really gorgeous haunting ballady moments on To Niandra Lades (the first one), mixed in with the utter brainmelting insanity, which is exactly how I like my records.

Okay, I'll shut up now.

mummy wrapped in bacon (nickalicious), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

Ned is an incorrigible Chili Pepper groupie. It's true.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, the "pish" comment is a wee bit harsh, but no one can sustain a high level of quality over such a number of releases in such a short time. If you took the best 10 tracks from all of "Curtains", "Sphere" "DC EP" etc then you might have a half decent album.

"Shadows.." and "TRWF10D" (as it is called above) still piss all over the other solo stuff, however.

Finally, I'm all for "brain melting insanity" as well, but "Niandra..." is more like a voyeuristic delve into one man's emotional collapse. And not in a good way.

Holy hell...There are people who hate the Rhcp? thats fcuking mad...Heres what would be amusing, listing out wat you consider as good music and then we can all have a good laugh. They've done alot for music the rhcp have, and you cant deny that, and if you do then your an asshole. Millions cant be wrong huh?

Titchio Burrell (titchio), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

Millions cant be wrong huh?

Millions would disagree with you.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

I deny it, Titchio; I hope 'your' not mad at me; I hope music recognizes everything rhcp has done for it

Roque Strew (RoqueStrew), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

1) FALL OUT BOY

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Monday, 24 July 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

They've done alot for music the rhcp have

This is true. By their example, good music shows up more readily for the contrast.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 July 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

Are we talkin' 'bout these Red Hot Peppers?

They've done alot for...your...asshole.

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha

I still love RHCP, btw; "Dani California" might just be "Californication" crossed with "Scar Tissue" but it's still miles better than anything off of By The Way. Plus my band is convering "Under The Bridge".

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 July 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno...i like that blah blah i tried to be part of the wave can't stop song better than dani california.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 24 July 2006 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I don't dislike em, but they are HUGELY overrated...

Flea is a little legend, I'd say without a doubt the highlight of the band...

But they are just a little bit meh, I don't think they're anything special... I tend to end up saying I don't like 'em to make my point, but I'll try very hard not to, as I am known to choose to listen to 'em every now and again...

Oh and I've even seen 'em live (headlining the VFestival) and they really weren't that great, an off day perhaps? or just not my thing live... I enjoyed Queens of the Stone Age and The Hives FAR more :)
