Here's a measure of how good 2010 was in metal, for me: I've got a provisional draft of my all-metal P&J ballot, and the massive, monumental Triptykon album is currently 13th out of 10.

13th out of 10

some funny math going on here

stats don't lie, man.

You're Twistin' My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Man! (Ioannis), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 16:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I meant that it's a great, important album, and yet there were 12 I rank, in some sense, even higher.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 16:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Only one of which is controversial as "metal". (But it's #1.)

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

New Rose Kemp is a last minute game-changer for my year-end lists.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link

The Rose Kemp gets better with each listen. I had it at 17 in my top 20 but it's climbing in just the couple of weeks since I made the list. So good.

Not really metal though - it's something else. I'll go with awesome.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 19:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Nate should just state that these bands stand beyond any criticism. If any man should attempt to criticize them, he should be thoroughly patronized for his obvious, etc etc.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Anyone can criticize any band. But to call me a fascist sympathizer and trade my private cel # around is not fighting fair. Especially since this group of cowards will not post my comments in response to their specious claims.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 16 December 2010 04:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I wonder if they realize the irony in their fascist approach to their anti-fascism.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 16 December 2010 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Probably not.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 16 December 2010 17:21 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm sure they don't. But you certainly nailed the dynamic. Also, Allerseelen stayed at my house last night and they are total gentlemen, frown on the right wing, and are about to go have coffee with me.

I like to make my judgments of character based on first hand experience; not based on internet rumors.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 16 December 2010 18:03 (thirteen years ago) link

"Hi, I'm Nate, are you guys Nazis?"

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 16 December 2010 22:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Do fascists like one packet of sugar or two?

"would you mind not goosestepping in public please?"

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it's as funny as you guys do. But the harassment and underhanded tactics this Antifa group is pulling towards me is very real.

Nate Carson, Friday, 17 December 2010 10:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, in no way am I trying to make light of your situation, I'd be furious is my private number was all over the place for crazies to call me. But I'm glad your sensibly sticking up for the guys.

Have any of you heard the new Hypnos 69 album, Legacy? Not entirely metal, more of a psych-prog record with stoner touches, but a really great example of when the progressive sound works for me.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 17 December 2010 16:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah dude, these guys are total creeps. I've been blasting them to everybody I can. I am 100% on your side.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 December 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link

does that say
TURDS

?

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure this is going to be in my top 10 for 2011 without having even heard it.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Turisas are such a blast - if they can come close to writing music that deserves such and awesome cover I'll be happy.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 17 December 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm still trying to figure out how to download the new track.

A. Begrand, Friday, 17 December 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I think you need to battle through barbarian hordes to get to it.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually, it looks like you have to give Centurymedia access to your Facebook or twitter, which I'm not entirely comfortable with.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:24 (thirteen years ago) link

THEN DONT DO IT

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:24 (thirteen years ago) link

You need to stop before I cleave your head in twain with righteous Viking fury.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Turisas/Paganfest in Montreal was one of the greatest metal shows I have ever seen. Huge expectations with this album.

A. Begrand, Friday, 17 December 2010 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

saw Brutal Truth a few days ago. man what a great show. all of the opening acts were good (a rarity, but oddly were all local too). bought me a Brutal Truth hoodie from Dan Lilker (was in awe, dude's hair is next level). learned that Dan A. isn't good at making change, and B. the hoodie musta been made in a sweatshop, cuz it leaves junk on everything you wear underneath it. but it still looks cool.

oh the show? phenomenal. they're all weird individuals, Kevin Sharp wore a cowboy hat, his voice/shrieks were impeccable, they played a lot of new stuff, but did include several tracks off of Need to Control and Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses. and for $10. best bargain of the YEAR.

Bitch, it cold outside!!! BURR (San Te), Saturday, 18 December 2010 15:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I know it's from last year but what do you guys think of Animals as Leaders? My TA just tipped me off to them. Seems pretty remarkable in its intricacy and precision. Well-crafted compositions too. Is there anything else I should look for?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 18 December 2010 23:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Tosin Abasi is one of the most extremely talented guitar players of the last decades. Really, that guy can do just about anything with a guitar.

Marty Innerlogic, Sunday, 19 December 2010 12:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Check out Scale the Summit as well. Also, Lye by Mistake. Both heavy instrumental dexterity units.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Tesseract is better than Animals as Leaders, in my opinion.

A. Begrand, Sunday, 19 December 2010 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

It's that time of year. Everyone (including lurkers) are allowed to vote ~~~~VOTE IN THE 2010 ALBUMS OF THE YEAR (METAL EDITION) POLL~~~ Voting Ends Sunday Jan 9th

Cathedral if you're British. High On Fire if you're American. The Body if you're disturbed. Electric Wizard if you have an spiritual bond to the dark arts. Encoffination if you're terminally ill. Iron Maiden if you're a classicist. Kylesa if you're hip. And all of them if you're righteous.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Monday, 20 December 2010 17:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Also the new Enslaved.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 20 December 2010 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

High On Fire is close but sucked compared to all their other albums

the Kylesa is ok but approached alt rock from 2001 at points.

some of these other suggestions could have come from the Rolling Metal 1995 thread.

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Monday, 20 December 2010 18:17 (thirteen years ago) link

that th eHigh on Fire doesn't really approach some of their other albums, but is still one of the best things i've heard all year in metal, either says volumes about the state of metal in 2010 (nah), or the consistency of this band (YES), or the fact that i just need to hear more metal (quite possibly!)

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 20 December 2010 19:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I know and enjoy Scale the Summit, although right now I think Animals as Leaders are a cut above. I'll look out for Lye by Mistake and Tesseract.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 20 December 2010 23:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't mind the Cathedral album but I never really got into it in the way that so many people on this board seem to. Seems kind of hokey, actually.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 20 December 2010 23:46 (thirteen years ago) link

ILM is the only place ive seen people rave about cathedral (or kylesa) people who are hardcore fans of both are very split on it.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 23:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I like the kylesa and the cathedral is ok but nothing special really.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 23:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I like the Kylesa better than the Cathedral, if only because the Cathedral is too long and too eclectic; it's like a buffet platter, where the Kylesa disc does one thing really, really well for a concise 40 minutes.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 00:08 (thirteen years ago) link
