Well, Pitchfork is basically the textbook definition of "I WANNA BE A TASTEMAKER" so that's not only is that particularly surprising to me, it's completely expected (I didn't see that discussion/article and honestly couldn't care less about it).

yeah, i was just surprised they were so open about it, because that to me is the textbook definition of critical dishonesty - diluting individual critics' opinions for the sake of some "greater good".

which is why Big Boi seems dumb & relies more on a response to critical hype than anything resembling critical perspectives

what? does anything else about the wire list give the remotest impression they're even aware of mainstream critical hype, let alone influenced by it? the big boi album is, as you say, just ok - but it's a super-likeable and way catchy and replayable kind of ok; i'm not remotely surprised at any love given to it, from any quarters.

could just be that they liked it?

its easy to like it when the rap you listen to is limited to rap cosigned by other critics in the bubble. im just giving them shit for not having an independent perspective

i think Big Boi on the Wire list represents the same thing Grinderman or Joanna Newsom does. "Here is an less-underground person who uses avant-garde ideas to make accessible music. We like that stuff too."

rmdfe. since when has wire been about what other critics think and not having an independent perspective?

Sleigh Bells sounds messy and brash and excited, which is why I love that album so much.

signed, thet last dude on earth who still loves Atari Teenage Riot

i think whiney makes a pretty logical case for why anyone, including the staff of 'the wire', would like the big boi record

I thought it was more like, the editorial crew figure out roughly what kind of score it's going to get, then find someone in the pool of reviewers whose opinions concur - ie kinda manipulative, but not really at the expense of the critic(s)

Lil B & Odd Future are exactly who the Wire should be ranking in year end ish.

Sure, but it's not like they were covering Lil B in the main section of the magazine until "Rain in England".

oh my god please don't let this thread turn into another "how your pitchfork sausages gets made" boreathon

skrrr boi (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:24 (thirteen years ago) link

it seems weird to jump down their throats more than any other publication -- sure their magazine basically runs on a bunch of outsider records, but critically acclaimed albums are that for a reason, cuz lots of ppl like them -- it doesn't seem like a very hard thing to figure out

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 14 December 2010 16:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Can we set up a killfile so deej, whiney, and a hoy hoy just don't see each others posts?

its because they are typically so independent in other music worlds that big boi feels like a cop to critical consensus

Or possibly that Big Boi album is much, much better than you think it is but you are too far down in the weeds to notice.

Guess which scenario EVERYONE on this thread thinks is more likely?

When Stylus still existed, our grading system was....more idiosyncratic, rarely matching the review's outcome. But we were less conscious about being tastemakers though.
