it is a mystery.

Senior.
― djh, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link
how can it be a lost classic if it was just released a few months ago? it was better than Junior but nowhere near as good as their debut.
― brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:24 (thirteen years ago) link
you jest
― just woke up (lukas), Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link
Oh, you know what I mean: great but ignored or ignored because it is rubbish.
― djh, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:32 (thirteen years ago) link
It's a decent album. Better than Junior. The third best album by Royksopp.
― brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:33 (thirteen years ago) link
but more importantly, why do you think it's a lost classic? make your case.
― brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:34 (thirteen years ago) link
I haven't heard it - it was a question.
― djh, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link
bld feel free to make yr case for it being better than Junior. i've kinda ignored this because tho it is by no means terrible it is kinda dull and neither as lush nor as busy as i was hoping they could make it.
― modrić in paradise (blueski), Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link
Curious way to go about asking if you should check it out but ok. I think it's worth hearing. It's got some good tracks, a few tracks that are just ok and no real stinkers. Nothing incredible either.
― brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link
My case for it being better than Junior = fewer vocals on Senior. Senior is more of a listening album, Junior is more of a 'let's make party tracks with guest vocalists'.
― brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 9 December 2010 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link
i was v keen on a good listening album from them but this wasn't quite it and i think they really are better at pop songs tbh

Finally getting around to hearing Senior (HMV, £3.00). Had forgotten that I'd posted on this thread.

despite not having had any interest in this lot before, i have been really enjoying senior a lot this week.
something to do with the need to have a calm groove in the heat ...

oooh .. budpest by blimp by thomas dolby is one of my all time fave tracks ...
tis the final crowd section - a genuine shivers up the spine moment
good choice.

really enjoying that album, have absolutely no time for the story at the end.
it seems so out of place and is joined on at the end.
Solid steel put a Ray Bradbury short story in the middle of a compilation in 2001 and this feels like an outdated extension of that.

Every instalment of Late Night Tales since the beginning has had a short story at the end.

How the hell can you have the luxury of 1. saving a voice like Susanne Sundfør's until the second half of your track and then 2. not even selecting it for your album!?

Listened to Senior tonight for the first time in years and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I'd kind of forgotten about it.

I have this memory of driving home in a blizzard listening to Melody AM it was getting toward late afternoon and the sun was fading, in Southern Minnesota where once the ditches are full of snow it just blows across the road so you can barely tell where the road ends and the ditch begins but Roksopp felt appropriate

the first 10 of the 15 lost tape tracks have been released on physical media but fans would have already bought them (and the other 5) online + this has nothing exclusive, I don't know who they think is going to buy this?
― StanM, Saturday, 18 September 2021 07:02 (two years ago) link
Did they ever top Melody AM? I've tried two or three of their other records, a few good tunes but none came close as an album.
― chap, Saturday, 18 September 2021 11:20 (two years ago) link
I have no issues with Junior as an album but otherwise - lots of great tracks everywhere, yes
― StanM, Saturday, 18 September 2021 11:36 (two years ago) link
They've never released a 'best of' compilation have they? Seems unusual

not yet, no

None of their albums are as good as Melody AM (esp the 2CD version) but a sixty minute playlist of the best songs of the other albums is.

yeah after Melody AM they were a top-flight singles band for me.

If they would just properly repress/collect their early singles and Melody AM album, I would be happy.
Just listened to the snippets on the website and it sounds pretty interesting, which kind of surprised me. I'm curious if this is going to be an 'ambient, standard, remix' approach or something different for the 3 releases.

New one's out there now. Hearing it's quite the return to form. Two new Susanne Sundfor tracks too. I see the Sundfor thread was bumped but there's more on the record than those tracks - new Alison Goldfrapp collab too.

Susanne Sundfør2 days agoIt’s always fun to work with the mushrooms, and I think this song and the rest is the best material we’ve ever created together 🍄🍄

Some of this stuff (eg the tracks with Beki Mari & Astrid S) seems pretty generic - not bad, I just wouldn't have identified it as Royksopp.

the mushrooms?

"Røyksopp is the Norwegian word for the class of mushrooms known as puffballs, but the band's name substitutes ö for the second letter (in place of ø)."
