Haha I said almost these exact words to Steve Braiden on the radio.

Like it feels like British dance music is approaching some kind of Wild Bunch style tipping point but not getting there due to a) lack of vocalists, b) lack of record labels to put the good stuff out (WHY are there no dedicated funky record labels?) and c) a residual hangover from dubstep that values bass over beats and hooks. It's getting there though.

the vocalists closer to this scene that spring to mind - ahu, fatima - tend to veer towards off-kilter/abstract/skewed hip-hop stuff themselves rather than club bangers

i have said to girl unit that what i really want to see, maybe in about a year's time, is for the "wut" ep to be scored for orchestra

Scoring dance music for orchestra never really works, it either sounds like remedial classical music or loses something else in translation. Unless they're going to somehow orchestrate for an airhorn and pitched up vocals it would just ruin it.

mosca - like this, it's colourful and ~classy~ and vaguely minatory

lil silva - like the ardkore stylings, it's the sort of thing hacks would describe as 'dayglo' had the klaxons never existed

girl unit (bok bok rmx) - oh no, dubstep

kingdom - the part where the vocal gradually materializes through the distortion abt two minutes in is rather impressive, otherwise less so

l-vis 1990 - synthy ardkore peaks nice, rest a bit thin for five minutes

jam city - clear standout, gazing with cold dead eyes upon the night slug lessers like a hungry kestrel on a telegraph pole

I really dig (Baby I Don't Know) What You Want by Jacques something.
