All these dudes need to stop fannying around with samples and instrumentals and start working with some actual vocalists a bit more.
Haha I said almost these exact words to Steve Braiden on the radio.

Like it feels like British dance music is approaching some kind of Wild Bunch style tipping point but not getting there due to a) lack of vocalists, b) lack of record labels to put the good stuff out (WHY are there no dedicated funky record labels?) and c) a residual hangover from dubstep that values bass over beats and hooks. It's getting there though.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)
the vocalists closer to this scene that spring to mind - ahu, fatima - tend to veer towards off-kilter/abstract/skewed hip-hop stuff themselves rather than club bangers

i have said to girl unit that what i really want to see, maybe in about a year's time, is for the "wut" ep to be scored for orchestra
― lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:51 (fifteen years ago)
Scoring dance music for orchestra never really works, it either sounds like remedial classical music or loses something else in translation. Unless they're going to somehow orchestrate for an airhorn and pitched up vocals it would just ruin it.

i was listening to the night slugs comp today and my itunes jumped from Jacques Green to the Jonzun Crew, which was kind of mind blowing

Umm... On "Booty Slammer" by Velour, is the sample saying "Inside of Me" or "Sodomy"?
― Evil Eau (dog latin), Monday, 2 May 2011 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

It's definitely saying "inside of me". Isn't it...?
― Number None, Monday, 2 May 2011 15:17 (fifteen years ago)
Just got the Egyptrixx album, pretty great upon first listen. Also, lots of excellent mixes are available on the night slugs web site.

Probably not that many songs mentioning sodomy they could have sampled it from

^^^ The 1994 mediocre Premiership goalkeepers jersey is surely one of the most unnoticed fashion influences of our time.
Pretty sure there's an actual dubstep record sleeve with that exact pattern on it.

on reflection matt might be right and mia might even have designed that shirt herself ...in 92 she'd have been what... 35?

mosca - like this, it's colourful and ~classy~ and vaguely minatory
― no xmas for jonchaies (nakhchivan), Monday, 9 May 2011 23:52 (fifteen years ago)
lil silva - like the ardkore stylings, it's the sort of thing hacks would describe as 'dayglo' had the klaxons never existed
― no xmas for jonchaies (nakhchivan), Monday, 9 May 2011 23:54 (fifteen years ago)
girl unit (bok bok rmx) - oh no, dubstep
― no xmas for jonchaies (nakhchivan), Monday, 9 May 2011 23:55 (fifteen years ago)
kingdom - the part where the vocal gradually materializes through the distortion abt two minutes in is rather impressive, otherwise less so
― no xmas for jonchaies (nakhchivan), Monday, 9 May 2011 23:59 (fifteen years ago)
l-vis 1990 - synthy ardkore peaks nice, rest a bit thin for five minutes
― no xmas for jonchaies (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 00:05 (fifteen years ago)
jam city - clear standout, gazing with cold dead eyes upon the night slug lessers like a hungry kestrel on a telegraph pole
― no xmas for jonchaies (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 00:10 (fifteen years ago)
