I listened to this numerous times in a little pub on Grand Cayman. Not having the artist or title quite right, I searched for it for years after (including a request here on ILM.) You don't get the spinning 45 on this, but still...

(Was looking for a "random old ____ you are loving" reggae counterpart. Sorry if wrong thread.)

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Friday, 8 April 2022 23:10 (four years ago)

fantastic track

incredible production by Dennis Bovell, from the same time he produced Linton Kwesi Johnson’s Forces of Victory album, which apart from everything else has the lushest percussion-drenched sound ever

oh the serendubbity! just found out a 38-track compilation of Dennis Bovell productions was released just two weeks ago! it’s called The DuBMASTER: The Essential Anthology - it appears to focus on his own dub recordings, but there’s tracks he produced for others as well (“Silly Games” and its dub version are there, and so is that Marie Pierre track, albeit in an inferior remix version)

also to the OP: the answer is Linton Kwesi Johnson’s Forces of Victory album, which apart from everything else has the lushest percussion-drenched sound ever

oops, that was for the Bovell thread!

Thank you all the same, that lead me to the Bovell thread, which lead me to an extremely solid jam.

I also gave him a shoutout in the Last.fm thread, but this DJ Muro mix is some hot schitt. All covers and some really good ones, at that:

not a 7" but one i keep listening to. Super haunting and more so once you know the backstory. Sir Collins' son was killed (murdered) in the New Cross Fire in 1981 and he made a tribue album which this is from (also recently came out on a 12").

Lady Saw - Sycamore Tree

my 12 year old, soon to be step daughter, is always singing this one

She certainly has better taste than I did at age 12.

paolo, Monday, 11 April 2022 07:42 (four years ago)

When my sister brings my one year old niece round I always stick on some dub music because she finds it calming (my niece, not my sister). I'm giving her a head start in life!

paolo, Monday, 11 April 2022 07:44 (four years ago)

Sycamore Tree is all time!

She certainly has better taste than I did at age 12.

And than I did too, although I did like Jamamican music when I was that age as there was so much of it in the top 40. Janet Kay's "Silly Games" was the one that opened the gates for me.

i do think children often seem to be drawn to it.

I’ve been revisiting this early 90s dancehall favourite of mine, I have mused over the years whether Steely‘a piano on this is supposed to touch an Italo House kind of feeling. Chaka Demus is good, I think, but a bit one paced and so best in small doses. Spanner Banner is Pliers’s brother.

a couple years on and i'm ready to declare the "dancehall version" of marie pierre's "can't go through with life" the superior, based solely on the embarrassingly entertaing rap she drops:

not old, but a jam.

in my ongoing unhealthy obsession with the isaac hayes composition "bumpy's lament" ―from the shaft ost, but later the source for "bag lady", "xxxplosive", etc.― i've found a vampy groove dub cover by a richie phoe (no clue who that is, web searches reveal another catalogue artist who has slipped past me, sigh). anyway, the song:

richie phoe ― "bumpy's lament" (2012)

much better than i would have guessed and one that's been in rotation for weeks by now, with no signs of slowing down.

been trying to stay as positive as possible these days and the 2020 album by ラブワンダーランド (love wonderland) helps massively:

track two "ラズベリーサン" ("raspberry sun") begins at 4.36, and is modern lovers rock perfection.

sounds very nice! who is... love wonderland?

corrs unplugged, Tuesday, 23 September 2025 08:52 (eight months ago)

It's fitting that I copped this from Stirmonster (via the Crate of Jamaica tape, that I've only just gotten around to listening to). An absolute monster from Sugar Minott, the rhythm track for which is some of the greatest Wackies filth I've ever heard.
