deej has a point about his unexpected popularity though: two editors at the student paper (one of whom is a white Colombian kid lol) were shocked that I knew about Curren$y. They'd loved his mixtapes for months.

You're a music critic, Al, that's hardly representative of the average rap fan. And they're writers of the student paper, thus much more likely to know this kind of stuff, too.

I should have said: these guys do not really follow music at all except for hip-hop. The Colombian dude is -- heh -- recording an EP over the break.

what are u basing it on? i agree after bny that wiz pulled ahead (& the numbers bear this out obv)

i still think curren$y is about as popular as one can possibly get while still being 'underground'

i think his national appeal should also not be underestimated -- hes decidedly not a regional artist

& finally, any crowd that jumped on wiz for 'say yeah' has to be minute at best -- he doesnt even play that at his shows now, and when he says "im about to take it back!!!" he still performs songs that came out after "say yeah"

i'm basing it on how much i hear about Wiz from rap guys i know IRL or on twitter, how often he does big sold out shows in the area, other stuff like Wiz being on the official remix to a huge Trey Songz single even before "Black & Yellow" was even out. Wiz & Curren$y are definitely both pretty popular together and individually but it feels very clear whose mainstream profile is higher.

i dunno i think this debate has actually fleshed out a better idea of how popular these dudes are, i feel 'more informed' having participated

i wonder why curren$y isn't touring -- obvi if wiz keeps up a consistent tour schedule thats going to affect things too

Yes, entirely. This is a big part of his appeal vs Curren$y. Doesn't make him a better rapper, but it counts for a lot.

but yeah, wiz has been touring like crazy

the wiz/curren$y mix was my favorite of the curren$y mixtapes but I tried Kush & OJ and couldn't get with a whole mix of just wiz. it was alright just ... too much I guess. their styles go good together imo.
