Anyone watch that JD video? Not very exciting , but it has lolBono singing the chorus to it and fucking it up.

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I bet you like Paul Young's version then? xp

It's a bit too slow, I think the tune needs a higher tempo. And Paul Young isn't a particularly good singer either. I wish someone would do a good uptempo synth pop version of Love Will... and redeem it.

Tuomas, Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

dear god i love maggot brain! proud as hell to have voted for it, and thrilled to see it show. could listen to it for days, my favorite single piece of rock guitar music ever. does throw off my mixtape though. maybe i can end with it...

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I could do that for you tuomas, if you raise the funds for me to go into the studio

BTW, my Maggot Brain comment was supposed to be a gag, in case you didn't get it. It's a good tune, but extended guitar solos have never been my thing. Granted, in that category it must be the best example I've ever heard.

Tuomas, Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah for everyone who voted for 'teenage kicks' I don't think I'll ever get bored of that song, I've been hearing it for seven years now and I still get the same rush everytime.

useless trivia: I originally thought it was a woman singing, not a man. I was very confused when I first saw a youtube of them recording the song.

i got the news today...

With or Without You was really high up my ballot, but SPOILER it does remain Bono-free.

my fave beatles song

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:58 (thirteen years ago) link

"A Day In The Life" is a great song (probably the best off of Sgt Pepper)

These 3 songs were nominated:

U2 — New Year's Day
U2 — Pride (In the Name of Love)
U2 — With or Without You

I think there's a good chance none of them will make it but you never know.

Have you heard of Bis? They did a synth version of it a few years ago but the vocals are a bit more computerised.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

those are three bomb-ass U2 songs btw

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

was "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)" nominated?

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:00 (thirteen years ago) link

'Day in the Life' seemed to me like the most 'important' of the Beatles songs nominated. Is this the higher they will go?

Moka, Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Since JF has already spoiled, this was the top U2 song:

677 U2 - With or Without You 449 4 0

seandalai, Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Good to see "A Day In The Life" in there. Hopefully there is still "Strawberry Fields Forever" to come (and if "Tomorrow Never Knows" or "Rain" is also up there, The Beatles may well be the one act with four entries in the list - even with this being ILM)

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not really appreciating the top 50 at all
The results are all feeling like 'ILXors of a Certain Age' (and certain mentality to boot)

ZOUNDS! (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh dear god Tuomas do you have no concept of personality within music?

Sure, but my hatred of rock music has also made me highly allergic of rock guitars and especially rock guitar solos. "Maggot Brain" is one of the few examples where I've managed to mostly get over that allergy to appreciate the tune for what it is.

Tuomas, Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:02 (thirteen years ago) link

its 1 billion times better than penny lane.
djp there's only 2 great songs on sgt peppers though!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:02 (thirteen years ago) link

The vocal is louder in the Peel session version of LWTUA and also in the alternate version on the single. I didn't vote for it, but I'm pleased that it's here.

"Maggot Brain" always blows my mind. It sounded particularly good here today.

Kent Burt, Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:02 (thirteen years ago) link

why do you hate rock music, Tuomas?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Keep in mind, I said the most appearances by a single artist is four. I didn't say that only applies to one artist.

XXX-Post Virtually everything The Beatles did in 1967 was great.

YES to 'Maggot Brain', glad I voted for that one; 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' I'm not so keen on anymore; 'A Day in the Life' never gets old - didn't vote for it but it deserves to be up here.

Fuck me - "A Day In The Life?!?!" It's no "Totally Wired." Etc.

Kent Burt, Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:04 (thirteen years ago) link

'Maggot Brain' made such a huge impression the first time I heard it - I bought the album never hearing a note and there was no way I was expecting THAT.

I was actually referring to your comments on 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'. I love some Funkadelic but cut them from my list in the end.

That album is weird in that I think it justifies its canonical status as a body of work, but most of the individual songs are weak.

well, "strawberry fields forever", of course. that hasn't shown up yet, has it?

i didn't give much love to the beatles, voting only for "and your bird can sing" and "she said she said", neither of which i expect to see make the cut. odd thing is that they aren't really my favorite beatles songs, but i've heard my favorites so very many times by now. anyway, i'm really glad that "a day in the life" did so well, blew my mind out when i was a kid (not necessarily in a car).

"love will tear us apart" is devoid of personality, consisting only of affect and intensity (albeit an easy mistake to make)

Moka, Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

I've never really had a clear favourite Beatles song but in the last few months I've really come around to 'You Never Give Me Your Money', so I voted for that. It's like a mini-Abbey Road medley.

Gavin in Leeds, Thursday, 2 December 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

If I had to vote for any of the Beatles songs nominated I think I'd go for any of those two, coincidentally. I've never been an active hater/lover of the Beatles but 'Revolver' and 'Rubber Soul' are the ones that I appreciate the most. Maybe I'd even place 'Magical mystery tour' as top 3 of their recordings for me.

I'd have no problems seeing "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" or "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" winning this poll.
