WHOA that shit was mod edited? fuck me sideways
anyway. back on topic. J0rdan OTM, deej is not rly outta line in this thread at all, i havent heard any of the mixtapes but deej's energy is kinda infectious & makes me want to hear em. love pilot talk 1 & waiting on 2 to arrive.
also: feeling rly left out b/c apparently rap in 2010 = mixtapes, blogs, youtube and here i am just buying CDs as usual ;_;

i personally am kind of an albums guy and am not that big on picking through individual songs on blogs, youtube, etc. but mixtapes really are basically albums now and it's basically as easy to follow which big/good mixtapes are out as w/ official albums now, the whole thing is that it's not this dense inaccessible hardcore fan only scene it used to be.

sorry for overusing "basically"
― the pussy re-upholstery gang (some dude), Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:46 (thirteen years ago) link
"The mixtapes were better" is also pretty much a truism now, right?
Like, would it even make sense to consider the careers - even the commercial success - of Lil' Wayne, Gucci Mane, Nikki Minaj (to name three examples that to me seem particularly prominent) based just on their official studio albums?
Okay need to hear this now.
― Tim F, Thursday, 25 November 2010 04:01 (thirteen years ago) link
no, of course not -- it would be like judging a piece of art only by the frame

i love tha carter ii & iii and the state vs. radric davis, haven't heard more than a handful of tracks from dedication 2 or da drought 3 or burrprint 3d, which i'll check out on youtube if i am pointed in that direction but otherwise don't really seek out. too much music out there for me to NEED to hear every "good" mixtape track that wayne's ever done; i'm satisfied with a couple statements that he feels justified putting out to the wider public.
sad? maybe, but it works alright for me

You don't NEED to hear anything, but given the mixtapes you listed there are all widely considered to be better* than their attendant studio albums, the fact that you'd bother to check the studio albums but not the mixtapes seems pretty arbitrary.
Like, I get not automatically checking every mixtape an artist puts out, but when some of them are in effect studio albums which possibly even the artist would admit are better than the album that just happens to get officially pushed by a major label, then disregarding them seems obstinate, the equivalent of thinking that, say, 3d animation is for kids.
* as always, insert caveat for Lil Wayne w/r/t carter II, shifts in style etc.
― Tim F, Thursday, 25 November 2010 04:31 (thirteen years ago) link
the equivalent of thinking that, say, 3d animation is for kids.
wouldn't say it's this kinda thing. more like, i've never bothered with any file-sharing or downloading, i tend to like artifacts, things i can curate and put on a shelf and then pull out at various times to reevaluate and hear again. so i've heard tracks here and there from the mixtapes. but once i leave youtube, i don't make an effort to download the full things and store 'em on my hard drive. not really the sins of the artist, more like i pay more attention to what's on physical format because it's what i've always done. maybe i'm old fashioned.

Yes, it's hilarious that Curren$y turns Michael Knight into a catchphrase, but it's really no different than Swizzy yelling "Oh you fancy huh?" a dozen times in a row. And I'm randomly breaking out into MICHAEL KNIGHT! MICHAEL KNIGHT! all the time. And Raekwon kills the remix.

The only bad song is "Silence" wtf is that shit. McKenzie Eddy is the worst. And the beat is jarring too after all that smooth shit.

went crazy and dl'd a bunch of these mixtapes over the holiday (Higher Than 30K, Smokee Robinson, and How Fly). good stuff.
what's the beat with the piano and hard snaps on "Lemon Kush" from Smokee Robinson? (also used for "Orange Juice" on OFWGKTA's Radical)
I should probably know it but can't come up with it

I thought he said grocery bag, too, at first listen. I was disappointed when it was just garbage bag; I was totally going to talk about the line in my review if it was in fact garbage bag.
