Where does one hear Bongripper? Can one buy their MP3s online?
― Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)
I don't want to miss out like I did with Gay Witch Abortion you see.
i saw bongripper recently as an opener for someone else (like 3 someone elses really). they were pretty good but i don't remember anything about their show at all.
i really popped in here to say new agalloch SO GOOD -- i'm so proud to sort of internet-know someone who was involved with making it. if i were 16 i would be rhapso-yapping on youtube about it, but i'm not.

In preparation for my BurningAmbulance.com review of the Ghost CD, I went back and revisited The Devil's Blood's The Time of No Time Evermore. At its absolute most aggressive, that record sounds like '70s Heart. And the Ghost disc reminds me of Blue Öyster Cult.

Man, this Bongripper album is awesome. Which of their other albums are good? I see they've had plenty out.
― Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)
oh man I kinda want that Dopesick test press but no way.

yes all bongripper is great but some stuff is experimental drone (Heroin (i have that ltd set with the drug kit) but the crushing doom material is awesome.

man, I want to give ghost a chance but I kind of hate them because I keep getting tricked into thinking there's a new album by the japanese ghost every time I read about em.

I'm still not tired of the Ghost (SWE) album. I'm actually surprised it's getting so much acclaim, but I'm glad it is.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:26 (fifteen years ago)
I don't get it at all. But I didn't get the Devil's Blood at first, so give me six months.

also, if xhukx ever checks in here: check out Don Juan Matus. Peruvian psych/doom on the milder end of both sides of that slash, i.e., the guitar's overdrive but not too distorted, it's very melodic, the vocals are sung not bellowed...really, if I told you their 2010 album Mas Alla Del Sol Poniente was some excavated mid-seventies treasure, you'd wonder how they got it to sound so full & clean but you'd believe this band was from back when. Beautiful guitar work, excursions into dub...not perfect (I kinda hate the vocals, but I often have that problem with milder doom), but pretty damn good.

I haven't! I've been pretty much all death metal lately but this DJM took me by surprise.

Yeah, having that Darkthrone record but not Cathedral is kind of like criminal insanity. Some good shit on there though.
― Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Thursday, 25 November 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)
A terrible list, wrong in nearly every way.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 25 November 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)
It has The Wizard. It has The Body. It has High On Fire. It has Nachtmystium. It has Kylesa. It has Sailors With Wax Wings... it's not that bad.
― Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Thursday, 25 November 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)
man I haven't even heard a lot of that. I have become the metal fan who would rather listen to old-school death & proto-BM than know what's going on in the genre.
― aerosmith: the acid house years (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 25 November 2010 16:35 (fifteen years ago)
There are lots of good albums on the list, but almost without exception they're way lower than they should be, buried under boring unlistenable shit.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 25 November 2010 16:37 (fifteen years ago)

hey, at least Burzum didn't crack the top ten (a mistake, imo), Phil.
― hipity-hopity muzik ftw! (Ioannis), Thursday, 25 November 2010 16:43 (fifteen years ago)
Nachtmystium and Ghost should have placed much higher tho, tru.
― hipity-hopity muzik ftw! (Ioannis), Thursday, 25 November 2010 16:45 (fifteen years ago)
some excellent records on that list
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 25 November 2010 16:47 (fifteen years ago)
3. Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones4. Dawnbringer - Nucleus7. Ludicra - The Tenant12. Immolation - Majesty and Decay16. Kylesa - Spiral Shadow17. High on Fire - Snakes for the Divine20. Those are the 15 albums on the list I actually like. I wouldn't consider all of them for my own year-end list. There were some close calls - the Father Befouled is okay, but I think it's only on the Decibel list because Incantation didn't make a record this year, and frankly Incantation should be charging them with copyright infringement; and the Dillinger album seemed okay at the time but I haven't listened to it since filing my review, and that's not a good sign.

in 2011 news the music on the new Owen Hart is kicking my ass
the vocals are fucking boring. have said this before. a whole generation of decent metal bands are fucking up by thinking that singing like the dude from Brokencyde is somehow intense or brutal or w/e. I would rather listen to the most generic death gurgle in the world than another fuckin note of BLEEEOWWW BLEOWWWW! oh yes dude you are feelin it I totally believe you! fucking whatever. you guys learn to play this awesome and then can't come up with a more original vocal look than this, it's a crying fucking shame. because this is an outstanding band fully knocked down to "ok & you'll forget you like them by this time next week" because of this.
― aerosmith: the acid house years (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 25 November 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)
These are the one's on that list I like:
1. Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit3. Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones7. Ludicra - The Tenant16. Kylesa - Spiral Shadow20. Electric Wizard - Black Masses22. Kvelertak - Kvelertak29. Christian Mistress - Agony & Opium33. The Body - All the Waters of the Earth Turn to Blood39. Lantlos - .Neon
Though I think the Cathedral record is better than all of them.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 25 November 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)
100% with aero on the vocals thing. He doesn't have to review as many screamo/metalcore albums as I do, I don't think, so I'm probably even sicker of the current "extreem" vocal sound than he is. No wonder I listen to so much power/trad metal in my spare time these days.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 25 November 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)
Weirdly, I wrote that & then found myself listening to the new Graf Orlock EP. It's screaming for sure, but it's dynamic, plus the actual hardcore link is audible & clear...so it works for me! (it doesn't hurt that Graf Orlock is basically a freestanding awesome riff factory & play like they're starving to fucking death.) but with SO much of the screaming metalcore style, there are ZERO dynamics. there's two levels of scream, and both of them sound like children who didn't get what they wanted for their birthday. which is why I am dubbing that style Bad Birthdaycore.

Only 11 albums I voted for made the dB list...there's not a lot here I agree with. Watain's far too high, Thou is overrated, and what the hell's a Pivixki???
The most heinous exclusion has to be Maiden. And Alcest. Overall it's a pretty disheartening list in my opinion.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 25 November 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
Maiden and Cathedral are grievous omissions, but so's Negura Bunget IMO.
By the way, the new Motörhead disc is up on loadown.org. Just FYI.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 25 November 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)
no maiden on a TOP 40 year end list is mind boggling!
no cathedral is less surprising. love it personally but it's a bit divisive, no?

even cathedral fans are split on it. It's certainly nowhere as good as some people think on here.
xp
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 25 November 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)
I still really enjoy the Cathedral album. It didn't crack my top 20 unfortunately...I had to leave out a LOT of great albums this year.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 25 November 2010 19:25 (fifteen years ago)
I think the cathedral album is pretty stellar myself. really jam-packed with ideas and I just love the SOUND of it.
have played it for a few folks IRL and the folks who already liked cathedral were way into it but I couldn't sell it to people who weren't already familiar.
― original bgm, Thursday, 25 November 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)
watain sux imo
what's the new graf orlock? a little gimmicky but it is a good gimmick and I'm a sucker for a well-executed grind/hardcore hybrid. like those guys.
― original bgm, Thursday, 25 November 2010 19:34 (fifteen years ago)
it's called DOOMBOX. a little less chaotic than that crazy one with the cardboard bug housing, but to me that's a plus -- I'm pretty through with as-crazy-as-we-can-get stuff. the riffs on this one are fucking AWESOME and yeah the hardcore pedigree is shining through. fuckin exellent release, due in January I guess.
― aerosmith: the acid house years (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 25 November 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)
Well, that does explain why I was only assigned blurbs for two records this year... they were the only ones outside of the top 10 that I voted for (and I only voted for 4 out of there).

Nachtmystium - Addicts: Black Meddle Part II32. Father Befouled - Morbid Destitution of Covenant37. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis
I will rep for all of these, Nachtmystium is way low though. And, as much as I love the Torche, that one is a bit too high.
― "I am a fairly respected poster." (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 25 November 2010 21:02 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, the Torche us merely a good stopgap EP and nothing more. Certainly not in the same league as the two albums.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 25 November 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)
I thought that Nachtmystium was way too low, but then, it was my album of the year -- so really, any position outside of the top 10 would have been too low.
