I made it through once, I don't know if I have the willpower to go through it again.

i gotta admire the "shitted on em" song with massive farty synths -- if you're gonna do it, just go all the way -- altho it still pales in comparison to the gorilla zoe song

― big smang theory (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, November 17, 2010 1:53 AM (3 days ago)

haha yes that zoe track is amazing

Yeah I'd much rather listen to the dope dope dope (but same-y?) Pilot Talk 2. YOUNG SPITTA!

yeah agree with it re: minaj, though i haven't heard - and will not go out of my way to hear - the ke$ha

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Thursday, 25 November 2010 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

though i'm not really disappointed as such with pink friday - i think maybe cuz my expectations dipped and fluctuated so much ahead of it, i'd definitely abandoned any hope of my dream minaj album that showcased everything i love about her happening, so i think i'm more relieved than anything that it's half-decent. what with the bonus trax there's definitely an acceptable album in here if you prune the more pointless songs, which is more than can be said for eg kanye west (and if we're talking about what an "interesting" "character" he is despite his album's flaws, how much more can that be said of nicki).

LOL at the NYT suggestion that we should consider Ke$ha a rapper now because she's no longer singing. Like she was singing before!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 November 2010 14:20 (fifteen years ago)

Good album. Nice balance between Nicki's pop side and her rapper side. (Like I'm an expert on that! OK, I like the balance between the two. If it had been all one or all the other, it could have been a bit of a chore to listen to the whole record in one go.) Superb use of samples too. I think I got more joy from the first listen to this than from any other 2010 pop album I've heard so far.

No bonus tracks on the copy I bought :(

The SBurbs (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 05:34 (fifteen years ago)

how does it rectify the gender politics with the fact that the music is creatively bankrupt horsecrap

jagger reupholstered my pussy (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 05:35 (fifteen years ago)

didn't suggest that it made me LIKE the album more than i do - i think it's still largely disappointing given the level of raw talent and potential nicki has, although there are four-ish tracks i like ok on this, and adding in massive attack and one or two of the bonus tracks it makes for a decent EP.

The SBurbs (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 05:40 (fifteen years ago)

lyrically she spends way too long talking about the gender politics and not enough time actually doing them. aside from the production, she doesn't even break out the voices on two-thirds of the album, and she never switches up mid-song. which...what is the point of that?

still maintain it's not a bad album for what it is - there are enough bloody tracks that piecing together a decent mini-album from them is easy. fuck the record buying public for making "massive attack" a flop and "your love" a hit though.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 09:41 (fifteen years ago)

I will trust you if you tell me to get it but is there anything even remotely as good as "keys under palm trees"???

Tim F, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:00 (fifteen years ago)

depends how you intend to get it, it only becomes worth getting when you take the 6 bonus trax into account (two of which - the best two! - are only available to non-americans like us if downloaded illegally anyway)

"keys under palm trees" is maybe the most underrated nicki song, soooo vibes

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:03 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah that's the one I always go back to, I always get surprised by how emotional the ending makes me.

Tim F, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:06 (fifteen years ago)

it always surprises me how blasé nicki is on record about doing coke - like even on "girls fall like dominoes" on pink friday, when she describes her ideal woman one of her qualities is "she can sniff up a ton"

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:09 (fifteen years ago)

like it's par for the course for rappers to rap about doing weed and e on record, and about dealing coke obv, but how many actually go there re: doing coke? (and on a couple of lines that i assume are just nicki BSing, heroin too o_0 )

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:11 (fifteen years ago)

seems sore common lately although i can't think of examples atm

The Reverend, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:56 (fifteen years ago)

coke is so expensive!

Spinspin Sugah, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 11:26 (fifteen years ago)

(and on a couple of lines that i assume are just nicki BSing, heroin too o_0 )

why would you assume this?

i look at the interior of my sack and feel sad (ilxor), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

probably just because heroin isn't the kind of drug one can use casually without it noticeably effecting a professional life that involves writing and recording on a daily basis and constant public appearances with wig/outfit changes?

Prince SBanBan (some dude), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

o_0 at having to ask that ilxor

also the line i was thinking of is "got some heroin, wanna go dancing?" and while i cop to a certain lack of expertise re: smack, i've never heard of it being used as a dancing drug

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

hahaha okay now that IS bizarre!

The bonus tracks are way better than most of the album. She should just stick to pitched-up dancehall samples, rave synths and air raid sirens and ignore all other production styles ever.

Khia gives the album a review, to hilarious results

three weeks pass...

this album is really fucking boring

those balls look like a butt (San Te), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

i got the version with the bonus tracks and of course those are some of the best tracks on the album, but all of the boring cookie cutter emo pop tracks are stacked on top of each other so I have to skip 7 tracks to get to another decent one.

I don't mind her going more pop for her debut but at least it could ahve been interesting. faux-poignant pop with cliche lyrics, meh

those balls look like a butt (San Te), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 04:23 (fifteen years ago)

the "Moment 4 Life" beat is so dope but ugh her singing

washa flocka brain (some dude), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 04:27 (fifteen years ago)

yea way prefer her mixtapes

those balls look like a butt (San Te), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 04:28 (fifteen years ago)

My sister has been playing "Right Thru Me" pretty much 24/7 since she moved back here. :(

tears of a self-clowning oven (The Reverend), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 05:45 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't listened to this yet but my roommate did & apparently it's all inspirational "i made it u can 2" music for teenage girls -- is it true? & lol if so

flopson, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 05:54 (fifteen years ago)

yes

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 5 January 2011 05:55 (fifteen years ago)

that angle kinda redeems it!

a lot of this album has grown on me - once you ignore the really egregious shit there's a lot of stuff i genuinely enjoy listening to. even "moment 4 life"!

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 08:45 (fifteen years ago)

^i agree with this. and 'super bass' has slowly become one of my favorites from her
