"wow" is my main thought - read a big breakdown on this band in Snakepit not long ago. extremely interested in the ongoing history-work getting done about this era of metal -- I'll be buying that when it's ready.

Anyone heard the new Intronaut?

I have. I'm not a fan, but others seem to like it.

I think I'm just really over harsh/death vocals in music that doesn't require it. Intronaut's music is Tool-ish enough that they could offer clean vocals, and I think if they did, their music would be improved immeasurably. (I also like Mastodon more when they try to really sing.)

I actually can't really argue with your point, though -- I mean, if the song is better served by clean singing than growling, there should be clean singing. I feel like a lot of bands are afraid of the cred police, or accusations that they've moved away from their style or gone "mainstream."

I actually agree with you Phil, I feel like cleaner vocals would really help them and I was kind of hoping to hear more of it on the new one. They really impressed me live though.

Anybody here a fan of Japanese death metal band Defiled? I've never heard of them and they're hitting me up about booking. Curious if there's anything special about them that I should know.

the good metalcore is like the stuff from the 90s when it was called metallic hardcore - I guess some folks would say that it's essentially a different thing but there are standout branches on the subgenre family tree, eg Overcast turned into Shadows Fall and Killswitch

I am big fan of the crossover thrash and thrashcore stuff more-so than standard metalcore. Like D.R.I., What Happens Next, Vorhees, etc. I don't know if His Hero is Gone fits in with that or what you'd call them but they're pretty great IMO.

I have a big special place in my heart for Biohazard, though, mainly cause of adolescent nostalgia. I think people tend to categorize them as early nu-metal but I think they are pretty solidly metalcore, at least in pedigree.

I really liked Deadguy and Bloodlet. Those were seminal metalcore bands for me that predated Converge. I guess I like my metalcore to still have an artistic edge.

i saw bongripper recently as an opener for someone else (like 3 someone elses really). they were pretty good but i don't remember anything about their show at all.

i really popped in here to say new agalloch SO GOOD -- i'm so proud to sort of internet-know someone who was involved with making it. if i were 16 i would be rhapso-yapping on youtube about it, but i'm not.

In preparation for my BurningAmbulance.com review of the Ghost CD, I went back and revisited The Devil's Blood's The Time of No Time Evermore. At its absolute most aggressive, that record sounds like '70s Heart. And the Ghost disc reminds me of Blue Öyster Cult.

Man, this Bongripper album is awesome. Which of their other albums are good? I see they've had plenty out.

yes all bongripper is great but some stuff is experimental drone (Heroin (i have that ltd set with the drug kit) but the crushing doom material is awesome.

man, I want to give ghost a chance but I kind of hate them because I keep getting tricked into thinking there's a new album by the japanese ghost every time I read about em.

I'm still not tired of the Ghost (SWE) album. I'm actually surprised it's getting so much acclaim, but I'm glad it is.

I don't get it at all. But I didn't get the Devil's Blood at first, so give me six months.

also, if xhukx ever checks in here: check out Don Juan Matus. Peruvian psych/doom on the milder end of both sides of that slash, i.e., the guitar's overdrive but not too distorted, it's very melodic, the vocals are sung not bellowed...really, if I told you their 2010 album Mas Alla Del Sol Poniente was some excavated mid-seventies treasure, you'd wonder how they got it to sound so full & clean but you'd believe this band was from back when. Beautiful guitar work, excursions into dub...not perfect (I kinda hate the vocals, but I often have that problem with milder doom), but pretty damn good.

It has The Wizard. It has The Body. It has High On Fire. It has Nachtmystium. It has Kylesa. It has Sailors With Wax Wings... it's not that bad.

man I haven't even heard a lot of that. I have become the metal fan who would rather listen to old-school death & proto-BM than know what's going on in the genre.

There are lots of good albums on the list, but almost without exception they're way lower than they should be, buried under boring unlistenable shit.

Those are the 15 albums on the list I actually like. I wouldn't consider all of them for my own year-end list. There were some close calls - the Father Befouled is okay, but I think it's only on the Decibel list because Incantation didn't make a record this year, and frankly Incantation should be charging them with copyright infringement; and the Dillinger album seemed okay at the time but I haven't listened to it since filing my review, and that's not a good sign.

in 2011 news the music on the new Owen Hart is kicking my ass

the vocals are fucking boring. have said this before. a whole generation of decent metal bands are fucking up by thinking that singing like the dude from Brokencyde is somehow intense or brutal or w/e. I would rather listen to the most generic death gurgle in the world than another fuckin note of BLEEEOWWW BLEOWWWW! oh yes dude you are feelin it I totally believe you! fucking whatever. you guys learn to play this awesome and then can't come up with a more original vocal look than this, it's a crying fucking shame. because this is an outstanding band fully knocked down to "ok & you'll forget you like them by this time next week" because of this.
