Seeing 'em again tonight (first time through was opening for Depeche at Staples Center, tonight is the Detroit Bar -- a rather smaller affair).

...and that was a pretty good set, a bit static but the highs were highs. Also, nice job covering both Sonic Youth's "100%" and the Gun Club's "Sex Beat," I'd say!

I loved Whip It On, but I never exactly fell in love with the second one. I really should check out the third one after reading this thread. Is there a new one on the way or something?

There's some new songs on their MySpace page. Going to see them tonight at the Echo.

Opening act Midnight Movies is pretty good too -- their set started as basic Velvet/Can worship (no complaints, but that's all it was) but as things went on they kept bringing all sorts of other stuff to bear, and ended on a fine high note.

They've been steadily posting about it on their MySpace page + playing some of the new songs at their shows this year.

Gut reaction: it's not hitting me as immediate as Pretty In Black did, but I'm liking it a lot.

Really, I completely missed out on Pretty In Black after I was told it pretty much sucks ass. But I only ever loved Whip It On. Lust is filthy.

The opening track on this is pretty amazing.

This is really really good. First indie album I've heard in a long time that I've liked.

They remind me a bit of Black Tambourine.

The new disc -- Lust Lust Lust -- appeared on eMusic today. I'm very curious based on the review, which says it's better than 'Psychocandy'.

Probably so, but the favorable comparison still speaks well of the disc. Others upthread seem to like it, too. Is it just a JAMC knockoff?

I am happy with the recent JAMC-type indie releases - Raveonettes, A Place To Bury Strangers, Magnetic Fields, etc. It's a very welcome return of sonic depth to iPod-quality indiepop.

Man that APTBS disc is good. The way a record oughta be.

I'll probably be crucified for saying it, but Lust Lust Lust is exactly what I was hoping to get from the disappointing Magnetic Fields album.

The Black Tamborine comment is very astute ... it has a strong Aislers Set feel to it. It sounds like it belongs on Slumberland, not Vice. Extremely strong album, but will it be remembered at the end of the year?

lust lust lust is pretty great. obv. the JAMC references are huge on the record, but it works cuz the songs are good....also i was suprised by a few moments (like aly walk w.me) that go into actual hellish noise not just "indie noisy-ish guitars".....

in a way they are sort of doing the same thing times new viking is doing for a different set of historical references (JAMC/Kitchens of Distinction vs. GBV/Stiltbreeze shit)

New album is fantastic, lots of variety for a Raveonettes album, the mood is lighter and more fun, the feedback from Lust is scaled back in favor of bigger harmonies and hooks. And they're great live, too!

The new album has been getting mediocre reviews overall (the last one did too).

I'm always surprised by critical reaction to this band. They sound like their influences (but update that sound, and they don't become pastiche). And they suffer critically for it, unlike a lot of other acts that do the same, e.g., Interpol; Vivian Girls; Crystal Stilts; A Place To Bury Strangers; The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (I like-to-love all these bands, BTW).

Anyway, classic.

The Raveonettes are better and more consistent than any of the acts Daniel just listed. Anyone digging that cloying Pains album would do themselves a big favor to check out this new Raveonettes one. It's in the same vein (generally) but a much better listen.

Good but weird Raveonettes show last night in Austin. Three songs in, "It's too hot to play drums in Texas!" Next 5-6 songs were all drumless, giving them a more freeform, bubblegum-psych vibe. Each of them did a song mid-set completely solo, while the other just stood there. Three guys from the Black Angels joined them for the last two songs -- "Lust" and "Aly" -- which with two guitars, two drum sets and a fuzzed-out bass sounded thick and powerful. Encore break... then they covered "100%" (Sonic Youth) and called it a night.

Anyway... they headlined the first night of Austin Psych Fest, so pretty sure the focus on noise/freeform structure was intentional. They didn't play anything too "poppy," e.g., no "Last Dance," "Dead Sound," "Candy" or any of their other super-upbeat tunes.

Some of the songs worked really well without drums, by the way. Others fell flat -- "Break Up Girls" for example, which lost all of its momentum when slowed in pace and played with just guitar and bass.

"Love in a Trashcan" was great.

"Ghost Riders" was great.

"Heart of Stone" (this one was done with drums, early in the set) was fantastic.

Raveonettes cover I Wanna Be Adored. It's for some sort of silly Doc Martens anniversary comp, but the cover is great and worth the hassle to download.

neat. their last album is probably my favourite since their proper debut

i think Observator is a bit thin on proper songs, not to mention i like 'em better in full-on shoegaze mode, or full-on pop mode, than this moody, in-between land of minor key songs with fewer hooks and less guitar noise... opening track is a dagger, tho.

observator is amazing, it's true.... but so is lust lust lust. and so is pe-ahi. i feel like this band is underrated. burying lush melodies under mountains of fuzz and laying ehtereal, sometimes cryptic vocals on top of it all is seen as an easy, tried and true formula. i'm not sure it is though. the raveonettes aren't my bloody valentine, but still there aren't many other bands who do what they do as well.

I was lukewarm on Observator, but their set at Austin Psych Fest last year was a big highlight and last night's show upped even that. I hadn't really given Pe-ahi a chance yet - but the new songs sound great live. I'll just go ahead and say it - they aren't MBV, but Curve 1993. Their sound is just that unstoppable. Do not miss.
