wrt to the "moral crises" can we please just call a spade a spade? it's so fucking obvious
The reason these writers wrap their "coverage" of OF in moral crisis is becaus they are desperate to jump on the content pig pile while the subject is in its gestation frenzy and they have nohing else to speak to in regards to actual music; in other words, and this goes for everyone who's written about them at p4rk and village voice, their only insight is cultural, they can't talk about the rapping or the musicianship because they don't know the first thing about it. Desperate for a cultural peg, they invent one. It's called blogging and it's basically a big joke. Fuck the Internet.

oooor people just get freaked out by rape jokes. not all of us are shakey mo.
― hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:36 (fifteen years ago)
there is a lot of truth in what surfboards is saying tho...
― townes van halen (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:38 (fifteen years ago)
of course there is.
― hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)
dude if you get freaked out by rape jokes you probably dont listen to or have a strong background in rap or punk or metal so why bother commenting on this particular group unless you're desperate to force yourself into the conversation for page hits or to seem like you have a novel POV on the subject du jour.
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)
yes i obviously don't have a strong rap background. i dunno, there is something about tyler's flow that creeps me out when it comes to rape jokes. like em obviously was too busy trying to not to giggle; tyler sounds like its a pedestrian act that kinda bores him.
― hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)
yeah there's a "river's edge" thing going on that's kinda creepy...the whole vibe is so 1980s to me for some reason...
...i dunno about eminem being entirely comic though....he seemed to be genuinely angry and really invested in it, esp the kim stuff...
em's relapse stuff was way worse than this, and more sickening to me, cuz it seemed like a really warped adult not a dumb kid making dumb "jokes"
― townes van halen (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)
can not even remember my one half listen of relapse but that makes sense with earl being a fan. i was thinking more guilty conscience type stuff - ofgwkta are obviously too young to have fucked up marriages.
― hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)
AND IT WAS THE BIGGEST ALBUM OF 09
in other words, mothers in Kansas bought relapse at best buy for their middle schoolers but you get up in arms about 9 completely innocuous goofballs fuckig around on their tumblr. this is such a waste of time
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)
biggest album of 09 - free from criticism. i remember the day relapse ousted sgt. peppers and blonde on blonde and kind of blue as the untouchable pop canon record.
― hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah dude, because MUSIC CRITICISM is what's really going on around OF. Nice attempt, now gtfo of the OF thread until you rate the music for what it is and not what you think will fill a word count
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)
i don't even have a fucking blog dude, calm.
― hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)
yeah like honestly a hoy hoy is good peeps and let's not fight over these goofball kids.
like the whole vibe of it is just goofy stoners to me, i think this is good but not important in the least.

odd future are dope bcuz they arent entirely one way or another, really
not sure of how 'fruitful' a technical discussion of the rapping on the mellowhype album wld be (e.g.) but surfboards p much otm anyway
― .gif of the magi (Lamp), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)
whatever. you = all the people pushing this narrative that OF is some drastic break from the culture when eminem is the most mainstream rapper int he world. they're controlling the conversation and it's wrong and transparent
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)
how bout those keys on "Loco"???? gorgeous
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

― a strapping 40-year-old caorni rapper at a party (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)
i've talked about these guys A LOT the past six months and rape joeks have only been about 20% of it, much like of themselves. But carry on pushing this narrative.
― hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)
wolf with a t-rex cockless talkwhile i invest stockin wet rockbig bitched bumpin' bed rocksub in the trunk bumpin' up against the dead cops
^^one thing that isn't being talked about enough wrt earl is that this is the first time in like...forever...that i can really think of dudes getting alot of critical mass using more old-school east coast rhyme patterns and cadences like this particular line i just posted
the classic "two word" rhyming thing, invest stock/wet rock is sooo classically 90s NYC...i suppose that is old school for those kids...
it's just funny how this is being played as some sort of weird/strange/disturbing new aesthetic (and i DO think they have a unique vibe), but to me the real interesting part is that a lot of is is explicitly a throwback to older stuff, esp. compared to the current southern-dominated rap market...
― a strapping 40-year-old caorni rapper at a party (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)
I bet if you threw "earl" right in the middle of an ICP album you'd never know the diff

― hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)
yeah they are totally stone's throw
― a strapping 40-year-old caorni rapper at a party (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)
they seem more in the lineage of lyrical west coast dudes (maybe i'm thinking of earl specifically) than nyc throwbacks, as opposed to say, when lil b does something like "age of information" or "i killed hip hop"
― dark side of the goon (The Reverend), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)
yeah yr right, i misspoke (kinda), i guess heiro etc would be a good starting point, tho they aren't as explicitly lyrical as say a freestyle fellowship....
but those lines in partic i was talking abt seem real nyc to me, the cadence of it.

eh, i've got a "strong background" in 2 out of those 3, and listen to a lot of rap. to note that extended, repeated rape jokes make one uncomfortable isn't necessarily some bullshit failure to engage with the music. people's comfort levels wr2 that kind of shit vary greatly, and earl is deliberately and vigorously pushing buttons. it's intentionally and grossly offensive, so to act all butthurt when people actually get offended seems a bit ridiculous. lots of people were offended by em, too, remember? personally, i don't have a serious problem with "epar", and often go around singing "a dead one in the front, a dead cop in the back, and two live bitches screaming 'odd future is back'" to myself. that said, it does make me second-guess myself, and i can totally see why other reasonable, music-literate people might simply draw the line:
next thing you know we're on earl's burgundy carpetand she's kicking and screaming for me to fucking stop it (scream)"look, you know it's not rape if you like it, bitchso sit down like a pretty ho and don't fight the shit"
i mean, come on...

― bork bork dudes get swagged out, literally (tpp), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)
rape jokes aren't really ever that funny or cool regardless of how much rap-a-lot you've listened to or whatever
― bork bork dudes get swagged out, literally (tpp), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)
uh i don't think surfboards is denying ppl's right to get offended by whatever they want--he is making an (imo) reasonable complaint that "offensiveness" is weirdly dominant in the discourse i've read about oddfuture
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)
i mean i would rather they didn't rap about rape too but it's so far down the list of things i think about when i think about their music
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)
yeah. like its fine (good, even) to be o_O about their rapey lyrics, but as a critical angle to their ~sound~ its a nonstarter.
― BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)
yah - i think the 'moral objections' are rarely raised as a principled stand or w/e theyre just a hook or a way of talking abt odd future
also tbh i think the brashness & terribleness of some of the lyrics helps make the vulnerable and nostalgic moments seem that much more 'emotionally honest'. dont really want to argue that rape scenarios are 'necessary' but they do serve a function beyond shock
― .gif of the magi (Lamp), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)
i like that angle
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
i think it's more that the shock lyrics help background the vulnerable and nostalgic moments, making it harder to box OFWGFTA in as corny indie backpacker shit. without the o_O moments (rape aside, for the moment), the whole thing would be a lot less distinctive.
― naked human hands and a foam rubber head (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)
the brashness & terribleness of some of the lyrics helps make the vulnerable and nostalgic moments seem that much more 'emotionally honest'.
wasn't trying to be dismissive. i do like that idea, lamp, but i don't think it works that way for me. it's more that i like the textural variety and personality on display.
― naked human hands and a foam rubber head (contenderizer), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)
Isn't that kind of what he's saying?
― dark side of the goon (The Reverend), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 20:54 (fifteen years ago)
maybe. or, the more i think about it, yeah. i was thinking that the violence wasn't really adding depth the soulful stuff, just contrasting with it. but okay, the net effect is exactly the same. rather than the conventions of a genre, i hear a set of human personalities at a specific point in life. so i take it back: lamp OTM.

― smangs of new york (deej), Thursday, 18 November 2010 06:12 (fifteen years ago)
"weird!! people arent just looking the other day when they joke about raping!"
all the people pushing this narrative that OF is some drastic break from the culture
Think the conversation is entirely about how this isn't some drastic break from the culture, and how much that sucks.
surfboards offtm forever.
― Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:13 (fifteen years ago)
i do think it's weird, because i don't think o.f. are doing anything different from what a lot of acts have done
it's also possible to acknowledge it and even discuss it without taking it to the level of "the thing about oddfuture is that they are really offensive"

substantiating my point completely. weak and stale cultural insights is all you have to talk about, so run away from any real musical evaluation and just write little think pieces about your version of the culture, the one you see through your screen at the coffee shop.

im not using this as a 'convenient out' -- im still trying to get into this stuff. ive admitted the rape-y ish puts me off just bcuz lol im getting old. but im not using it as a reason to damn this stuff or something. i just think that u can defend this stuff musically w/out resorting to 'rape jokes arent a big deal'
