i remember ethan linked to an esham record a couple years ago, a new one at the time...anyway it's really good, at least as good as oddfuture. i was pretty surprised by how waved out it was.

xp says the "if they weren't on x label and hyped by y people no one would care!" guy -- you should take all of your insightful and fresh points to the xx thread
― thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)
anyway i think oddfuture is pretty cool i just hope ppl check out esham...the album was sacrificial lambz
though all the debate stuff about oddfuture's content is kinda weird cuz it's like...well we could have had this debate about geto boys 20 years ago, or eminem 10 years ago, or like gravediggaz, or whatever
― i got two wax cylinders and a speaking trumpet (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 15 November 2010 21:11 (fifteen years ago)
though i guess there is a certain sorta disaffected cali stoner thing going on that more skatepunk to me...i mentioned "last caress" by misfits, this stuff reminds me of hardcore in a way i can't quite put my finger on...like they don't quite have the patience to even halfway pretend that they are being serious about it....

well, tbf, lots of people did have those discussions (and a few doubtless still do, somewhere). it's not like content is a triviality. but yeah, geto boys & misfits are good comparisons. combo of horror, comedy and the obvious desire to say outrageous shit for its own sake effectively neutralizes any real ability to offend.

On Radical the Wolf Haley track "Leather Head"
Just wondering if anyone knows what song it samples.. It sounds like Liars or something.. although he mentions Joy Division in the song like 3 times I'm doubting that's where it was taken from.

while obv there's a continuity w geto boys gravediggaz eminem this shit to me is really a product of their (& my) generation of hyper-vulgar schoolyard bullshitting, & if anything that's the novelty of it, and maybe also its source of innocence and moral vindication for p4k writers & whiney who are having moral crises over this stuff.
i can only imagine the same thing was going on in la, but i think we rly raised the bar wrt cussing each other out. more south park/the internet/violent video games than rap

wrt to the "moral crises" can we please just call a spade a spade? it's so fucking obvious
The reason these writers wrap their "coverage" of OF in moral crisis is becaus they are desperate to jump on the content pig pile while the subject is in its gestation frenzy and they have nohing else to speak to in regards to actual music; in other words, and this goes for everyone who's written about them at p4rk and village voice, their only insight is cultural, they can't talk about the rapping or the musicianship because they don't know the first thing about it. Desperate for a cultural peg, they invent one. It's called blogging and it's basically a big joke. Fuck the Internet.

oooor people just get freaked out by rape jokes. not all of us are shakey mo.

of course there is.
― hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)
dude if you get freaked out by rape jokes you probably dont listen to or have a strong background in rap or punk or metal so why bother commenting on this particular group unless you're desperate to force yourself into the conversation for page hits or to seem like you have a novel POV on the subject du jour.
― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)
yes i obviously don't have a strong rap background. i dunno, there is something about tyler's flow that creeps me out when it comes to rape jokes. like em obviously was too busy trying to not to giggle; tyler sounds like its a pedestrian act that kinda bores him.
― hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)
yeah there's a "river's edge" thing going on that's kinda creepy...the whole vibe is so 1980s to me for some reason...
...i dunno about eminem being entirely comic though....he seemed to be genuinely angry and really invested in it, esp the kim stuff...
em's relapse stuff was way worse than this, and more sickening to me, cuz it seemed like a really warped adult not a dumb kid making dumb "jokes"
― townes van halen (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)
can not even remember my one half listen of relapse but that makes sense with earl being a fan. i was thinking more guilty conscience type stuff - ofgwkta are obviously too young to have fucked up marriages.
