Oh and I may be the last to know this, but "Hallow's Victim" and "The Walking Dead" by Saint Vitus is available on CD again. And on vinyl, I think. Hooray!
I didn't know either! Man, Greg Ginn doesn't really want anyone to know SST is still a going concern, does he?

I think he only represses stuff when he needs more money for weed and/or to press copies of his boring vanity project jam bands.

Saw Monarch last night. Good set; one long piece, "Sabbat Noir" (which is also their new CD, which I bought).

glenn macdonald in the house!
― scott seward, Saturday, 13 November 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)
The "house" in question here being Scott's excellent record store and Lincoln Log construction studio in Greenfield, MA, where I dropped by with my daughter for a brief visit while her mother and uncle were at a nearby rock show (in this case rock as in geology) on Saturday. Always strange and cool to finally meet somebody in person after years online. And it gave me an opportunity to show off my parenting skills, by which I mean having successfully taught a 3yo to hold the horns high and even wave them a little bit. Admittedly her waving doesn't have a lot of really dark menace to it yet, but give her time.

This review of Electric Wizard's Black Masses claims it's a complete disappointment compared to Bongripper's Satan Worshipping Doom. Say it ain't so! I'll choose to believe Freeman's review and prepare to be pleased when I finally hear it.
― Fastnbulbous, Monday, 15 November 2010 19:40 (fifteen years ago)
Both albums are fantastic. Black Masses is on a par with Witchcult Today. The CD sounds ever so much better than the rips going round on 320bitrate mp3s btw

the last 5 or 6 mins of Black Lake Nidstång are amazing, esp when the scream comes in with a couple of mins left. Awesome track (luckily Nate didn't ruin it ;) )

Sorry but I will never listen to a band called Bongripper so EW wins by default.

Man, I love the new Wolvhammer. I don't think I was that impressed with the demos they weregiving away, but the new full length is great.
The new Weapon is one of my favorites for the year, too.Are you reviewing it, Adrien?I think you're the only one who's mentioned it so far.
Also, has there been any mention of Sigh's Scenes from Hell on this thread?I think it's the most fully realized album of the 'new sound' they've been toying with.I thought it was a great album at first listen, but now I'm not so sure. Additionallistens brought diminishing returns, but I really should go back to it and see whatI think now. It's been many months since I've put it on.
― serenchwilen, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)
Have there ever been any successful, full-blown fusions of metal with salsa or other Latin musics?
I'd love to hear some kind of metal take on the classic New York salsa sound -- Colon and Lavoe, etc.
― serenchwilen, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 02:35 (fifteen years ago)
dang, that i have never heardi love salsa but salsa and metal?! that could be crazy talk.

Yeah, Puya springs immediately to mind. I'm sure there are others; I'll look into it.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 03:51 (fifteen years ago)
Seriously, though, that first Puya record, Fundamental, was actually pretty decent. I believe I even wrote about it for Phil -- Here we go:
PUYAFundamentalMCA, 1999Out of all the bozos that chunky-riffed their way to success in the late 90s, it stands to reason that one of the few bands that did something interesting with the sound would fall to the wayside. Puya had the key distinction of being from Puerto Rico, not the suburbs, and they brought their Latin sense of style and melody to Fundamental. There's still plenty of crunch, don't get me wrong, but the band wasn't afraid to break into funky salsa jams on songs like the title track and "Montate." A melting pot in the best way, this illustrates just how much unrealized potential nu-metal had.
I like to think I've improved as a writer since then. But probably not.

I...obtained the new Crystal Viper album purely because of the awesomeness of its cover (scythe-wielding werewolf on horseback in front of a scary castle), but the music is pretty awesome. They're a female-fronted power metal act from Poland, and this is their third studio album. If you like Iron Maiden (and/or Slough Feg) and Doro, you'll like this.

I love Decibel's resurrection of the flexidisc. Best idea they've had in a long time.
Oh, and serenchwilen, I did review the new weapon, it should be in next month's dB. But I'll spoil the surprise and say it's the best Canadian metal album of the year. Easily.

Man, now I REALLY need a record player.
Also: already posted that album cover, Phil. Come on, there are enough hilarious pieces of metal cover art out there, no need to repeat. Although I will grant you, it is so awesome that it's worth a second viewing.

I remember how geeked my buds & I were in 1984 when that Grim Reaper album came out...that cover was too awesome for words. Still looks great! Too bad the actual record was a bit on the average side.
Meanwhile, the new Cauldron album is ace, but it's been beeped so obnoxiously it doesn't deserve media coverage. I'll just have to download the inevitable leak, I guess.
― A. Begrand, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)
I'm pressuring Earache's PR dude for a non-beeped promo; if he gives me one (he's done it in the past, for higher-profile releases than friggin' Cauldron), I'll let you know so you can pester him yourself.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 03:14 (fifteen years ago)
Thanks. Cos this album is really, really good. Cauldron always reminds me of those obscure but killer Canadian metal bands that came out on the Moose Molten Metal series back in the day.

I love HIMYM's Canada jokes.
Yes!!! I believe White Wolf was on the flipside of that. RCA was touting both bands at the same time.
― A. Begrand, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 03:21 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I was really psyched to hear the new Cauldron until I saw that it was beeped. I know, cry me a river. Anyway, as far as Crystal Viper go -- I didn't realize that it was a woman! But then again, Sinergy's Kim Goss sounds a whole lot like Bruce Dickinson on a few tracks on Suicide by My Side, so that may just be a function of the genre. AFM sure are dependable for putting out totally derivative but totally enjoyable Euro metal.
― Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 03:37 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I was really psyched to hear the new Cauldron until I saw that it was beeped. I know, cry me a river.
Yeah, it seems trite, but holy crap are these beeps on the Cauldron ever loud and shrill.

Danzig was the best I've seen him since '92 tonight. He finally has a great band again. And the support (Withered, Toxic Holocaust, Marduk, Possessed/Sadistic Intent) was great.
I can firmly recommend the Blackest of the Black tour this year.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 09:58 (fifteen years ago)
Aldo, I can put you on the guest list for the YOB show... Write me.

Sadistic Intent!? Wow!
― you're not là-bas of me (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 17 November 2010 10:05 (fifteen years ago)
Well it was the singer of Possessed (wheelchair-bound) with Sadistic Intent as the back-up band. It was fucking awesome. Made me much more curious about Sadistic Intent than recent Possessed though. They really killed it and would have stolen the show except that Danzig's set list was really impeccable.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 17 November 2010 10:48 (fifteen years ago)
Danzig should really learn how to sing INTO the mic though. He was constantly either inaudible or feeding back. Then he'd get mad at the sound crew when most of it was his mistake for trying to jump around and hold the mic in these "cool/metal" angles that having nothing to do with being a professional vocalist.
