man "stapleton" is TOTALLY operation doomsday
― S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)
haha yeah i can understand why a bunch of kids who were barely out of kindergarten when the '90s ended might want to be compared to "cool" rap, pace the interviews, but whether by accident or design this stuff is hella '90s underground. (which is why i like some of it.) (telling these guys to buckle down and make a coherent album is major league point-missing re. their whole aesthetic so i doubt i'll ever LOVE them but hey.)
― strongohulkingtonsghost, Friday, 22 October 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)
i mentioned fondle 'em records up thread, totally has that backpacker-yet-knucklehead vibe
who else? maybe j-zone
― S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:15 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i think it's totally a good thing strongo, but maybe it's just nostalgia
i just think it's kinda awesome that their assholism and ignorant shit is letting them sneak by some good old backpacker shit into the cool guy rap internet scene
also:
btw i would just encourage ppl to check out "Everything's Berri" by A.G., which is a great album even tho he is old as shit and no one gives a fuck anymore...
it's not *like* this but it's got a weird dusted vibe that ppl might appreciate and no one really seems to be paying attn

"you compared us to anti-pop consortium waaaah!" "well then stop making records that sound like anti-pop consortium with a bunch of drunk, hilarious teenagers rapping over them instead of slam poets."
― strongohulkingtonsghost, Friday, 22 October 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)
i keep meaning to dl that ag record
― straight outta furnace (The Reverend), Friday, 22 October 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)
i've only got arryhthmia but i think apc is a weak comparison. is there any evil anti-pop shit? or is it because their songs have concepts sometimes? i think pharoahe monch would be a fairer ref and it seems to me the writer only pulled that card to make a point about how more complex multisyllablic rhyming hasn't been a characteristic of ignorant cool rap for a while
― samosa gibreel, Friday, 22 October 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)
lol which of these dudes sounds like / approaches rapping in any way like pharoah
― j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Friday, 22 October 2010 19:16 (fifteen years ago)
anti pop production sounds weird a lot like this does
more complex multisyllablic rhyming hasn't been a characteristic of ignorant cool rap for a while
http://www.yorapper.com/Photos/gucci-mane-ringtone.jpg?
― straight outta furnace (The Reverend), Friday, 22 October 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)
you could make an argument for gucci being a complex multisyllabic rapper but personally i wouldn't buy it
i think using monch as a reference point communicates the fact that they actually sound cool and menacing & is less back-handed. but it's true they both make weirdo battle rap
― samosa gibreel, Friday, 22 October 2010 20:14 (fifteen years ago)
its a super-abstract argument if so
― j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Friday, 22 October 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)
All the faggot+rape stuff is a good way not to get pigeonholed as backpacker alt-rap.
― bike chain dust? (lukas), Friday, 22 October 2010 21:02 (fifteen years ago)
you guys realize that hating on pretty much all music is part of tyler's shtick? i don't think the dude has anything against anti-pop consortium specifically, but he talks all the time about only fucking w/ like brick squad, eminem, badu & justin bieber (and grizzly bear) -- being able to say "fuck this" to pretty much the rest of rap music is part of the odd future aesthetic
― J0rdan S., Friday, 22 October 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, "wake up faggot" joins "institutionalized" and DRI's "madman" as the top rank of punkass parentsjustdon'tunderstand jams.
also "buckle down and make a coherent album"??one of my favourite things about earl is that it's such an ALBUM; flows from first song to last. it's got an intro ffs. and the first cut is clearly a first cut; so fucking fierce, great way to start an album.
i think it's sometimes getting missed but this shit is so good musically.tyler's beats and song structures and whole sound are so fucking tasty.shit like in sandwitches after "triple 6 is my number you can get it off my tumblr"... ...that silence is just perfect. lots of cool details like that.
don't remember being too impressed with the APC that i heard, but if it's half as good as the golf wang, i should check it again.
this really reminds me of when grime first hit, not sonically so much, but same kind of DIY scene and teenage fury vibe. plus, dizzy gets a shout out.
― m0stlyClean, Saturday, 23 October 2010 01:07 (fifteen years ago)
artists consciously trying to make coherent albums -- when rappers hear that, they start trying to make illmatic-length snoozes like that 1st murs/9th wonder lp (the best thing u say about it is 'at least its short & has no skits!!') or they try to do a biggie-style thing where they make all these pop moves but they are not biggie or puff. most rappers are already aiming for coherent albums, but when u encourage them to do more it usually becomes this kind of epic ambitiousness instead of, like, making good music
the waka record is the most consistent & solid rap record ive heard in awhile but i hate to imagine what would happen if he thought he 'just needed to make a coherent album statement'
― j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Saturday, 23 October 2010 01:11 (fifteen years ago)
i don't think this is supposed to be a 'coherent album' -- i mean tyler's album is pretty long & domo's gets long in the tooth at the end too -- i don't know why earl's album is mostly short joints but i'm not sure if i would chalk it up to outside pressure to 'consciously make a coherent album' or w/e -- i mean it certainly 'opens' like an album in that it has a skit than the track where dude just spits w/o a hook etc but i don't think deej's classification really fits at all
― J0rdan S., Saturday, 23 October 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)
i dont generally notice signifiers of coherency when i'm listening to rap albums or tapes. unless it's really obviously incoherent w/ bad pacing, bogged down by skits, poorly sustained style or tone all that really matters is if each song is good. i generally find 'the album works as a whole' arguments super pretentious and unnecessary, and when it comes to hip hop it's like the worst stupidest bullshit someone could be thinking to themselves while listening to music

no im defending their current way of doing things!! i meant, 'critics, dont encourage them to make ~more coherent statements~ because those things are always misinterpreted'

― bike chain dust? (lukas), Saturday, 23 October 2010 07:57 (fifteen years ago)
^ yeah, what lukas said makes good sense to me. goes w:
think pharoahe monch would be a fairer ref
hear it in very much the same way. like it's indie, but working against that idea.
― naked human hands and a foam rubber head (contenderizer), Saturday, 23 October 2010 08:09 (fifteen years ago)
yeah but there's ill bill, cage, j zone, high & mighty and hell even eminem comes out of the backpacker world of the 90s, there's a ton of ignorant type shit in backpacker, or at least in the high point of that era.
― S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 23 October 2010 15:21 (fifteen years ago)
i think ilm has a distorted view of what backpacker really was, because ethan sort of set up the whole thing of having to distance yourself from anything corniee, indiee, or fucc
― S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 23 October 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, the pharoahe connection doesn't make much sense by light of day. was awful damn drunk at the time tho, and i do sometimes subscribe to the backpacker = conscious fallacy. forget that, yeah, em & pharoahe shared a soundbombing 12".
