dunno, thinking that i'd want to stay under the $300 range? I have no idea how much this stuff costs nowadays. xpost

I like packaging/artwork/sleeve notes/posters/hidden surprises
it sounds great
sometimes (especially in the case of old stuff) it's WAY cheaper
tons of stuff that is either unavailable digitally and/or very expensive/hard to find is much easier to get on vinyl (thinking primarily of country, jazz, reggae, obscure rock/psych stuff, etc.)

i can't find the seller's id i dealt with, who was completely brilliant, but ebay, for vintage (1970's) pioneer, technics, and also nice yamaha turntables won't cost you half of that. picked up a 1970's yamaha a few years ago, still goin' strong
― KC & the sunshine banned (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:30 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i should just start trawling ebay i guess?
― tylerw, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link
my advice:
as far as new turntables...the pro-ject debut III and rega P1 are both $400 and great....
under that, i would probably just scour craigslist and find a good old used turntable and maybe use some of the extra money to buy a good cartridge for it...

rega P1
IMO

yeah, i gotta get speakers/amplifier etc too. the record player i have now is like a step above a fisher price toy player. used to have a much better set up but it was destroyed. long story.

i recently picked up a great dual cs 505-1 on craigslist for $60 recently...usually if you see the model number do a google search and you'll find discussion on audiophile boards about it
a good quality used one from the 80s will be light years beyond a cheapie

hey daniel what record player did you get. i am thinking about upgrading from my horrible record player. i like vinyl mainly cuz it is cheap. or at least some of it is.
i like vinyl mainly cuz it is cheap. or at least some of it is.
i'll circle back later to say what brand/model i bought, when i get home. but i didn't buy it based on any research. i just decided i wanted one ASAP and went to the first place i knew (a) carried them and (b) was still open at 9PM. that's why i worry if i overspent for a bad model.
as far as price, the place i bought my record-player (spec's music in coral gables) has a small vinyl section. but everything is expensive! it's all, like, $25.00 a record. you say vinyl is cheap?
― Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 20 October 2010 19:29 (thirteen years ago) link
well, used vinyl. new vinyl can be crazy expensive.
― tylerw, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 19:32 (thirteen years ago) link
used vinyl online? 'cause i know of no brick-and-mortar stores around here, at least, that have any decent selection of used vinyl.

used vinyl online--ebay, discogs.

The crappy chain store in my town (owned by FYE) seems to have no clue about which titles or how many to buy (there are like 4 copies each of four different Cannibal Corpse records). And they price the new vinyl ridiculously (except Numero Group stuff, oddly). But the used stuff is all between 2 and 5 dollars. I check it out once a month or so.They have an ad up in their window looking for a new store manager who "knows vinyls" lol.

To me, everything about vinyl is just more fun-- the shopping, the artwork, the playing. I like that it connects me to a time when listening to records was more likely to be something you did as an end in itself. I like flipping through records. I like looking for good deals. The fact that good sound can come from a vibrating piece of material in a groove seems like a miracle to me, somehow even more so than a laser reading 1s and 0s. I like how records sound, but I can't really say if they sound better than CDs to me, because there are so many other parts of the experience that make it better, I am sure that colors how I hear too. I like that I am listening to albums from the 60s, 70s, and 80s in the format for which they were designed. I like that it slows me down and that it isn't easy to switch to something else. I will say that the shopping aspect of vinyl is a big part of for me, finding good deals and going into stores not knowing what I will find in the New Arrivals used bin. I like collecting but I don't pay a lot of $ for things. Most things I find and like are between $4 and $10 or so, and they need to be in good condition.

as a kid w/ limited funds, discovering used vinyl shops back in the day was a fucking godsend -- for the price of one new CD you could get, you know, four or five classic records. not necessarily rare stuff or anything but coming home with, say, five rolling stones records i'd never heard was an intense experience.
― tylerw, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link
^^^yeah this was a big deal to me. Why spend $25 on some dubious indie band when I could buy half a dozen classic Cheap Trick records for the same amount?
