amyway, i'm going to write some of my thoughts on these songs because it seems kind of hollow merely namechecking them.

entombed - sinners bleed (duck's ass tight rhythm section married to loose, maniacal vocals, this song is a cavalcade of frenzied riff after riff. guaranteed to melt face.)

fabrizio de andre - la cattiva strada (pretty and langid on the surface, it lulls you into a false sense of placidity, while only subliminally does the sheer gravitas of the subject matter floor you.)

the wrens - she sends kisses (evocative, poised lyrics with an eye for bleak detail (‎"hopes pinned to poses honed in men's room mirrors"). it winds slowly and deliberately, channeling resignation and catharsis in understated and rewarding fashion. that's more than enough reason to distance this band from the dreaded "emo" tag.)

nick cave and the bad seeds - stranger than kindness (everything about this song is ghostlike and graven cold - from the quavering guitar line to the trance-like, druggy vocal. it's a genuinely creepy number that does a hell of a job of sustaining a mood.)

palace music - the brute choir (the melancholic verse hook encountered here is the single most affecting detail in mr. oldham's oeuvre for mine. plus there's an unhinged, virile quality to this song and 'viva last blues' as a whole that is altogether disarming.)

kylesa - unknown awareness (it almost floats on top of you - a very uncharacteristic and sophisticated feat for sludge!)

harry nilsson - don't forget me (is it just me or have the arcade fire modelled half of their schtick on this one nilsson track?)

francoise hardy (those with a weakness for cooed female vocals sung airily in french are sitting ducks here. just impossibly pretty.)

cibo matto - beef jerky (it's like an open mic night in kichijoji gone awry. "let's eat carrots together until..." sounds more like demented insistence that an innocent suggestion.)

wipers - no fair (it's a strange and rare fusion of anthemic, larger than life grandiloquence with reverb-washed eeriness. the most sinister rally to arms i think i've ever come across. but i'm 100% on board.)

killing joke - love like blood (whereas most songs by the joke get under your skin through repetition and machine-like hook, this song sounds very human, flighty and well... kind of romantic. it's like duran duran in vampire guise.)

Pluto Shervington - Your Honour
Recently discovered this '70s Trojan singer, most well known for Ram Goat Liver and DAT. Most of his songs have an irreverant, almost gangsta-flavoured angle despite being sung very sweetly and with a real sense of melody. In "Your Honour", Shervington appears to be defending himself in court against a crime he didn't commit, but it all comes off a bit "honest guv'nor!" and I start questioning his moral intentions.

Console - A Homeless Ghost
I've been raving about the new Console album for months now. It's Martin Gretshmann of the Notwist, and it's great. This is the slow-burning disco stomper.

Spoon - I Saw The Light
I love the doomy descending piano on the extended coda for this track. Spoon have an incredible knack for playing around with time signatures and conventions, no less so than on the recent Transference album.

Shining - Fish Eye
Shining have reignited my love of art metal. This track starts hard and heavy and gets fast and furious. Love it.

Yuck - Get Away
A hazy nostalgia trip for the grunge generation. If you grew up listening to "Goo" or Dinosaur Jr, chances are you'll like this. A derivative concept that's too well executed to hate.

Jamie Woon - Night Air
Blows my mind every time. So many little subtleties in the production. Chilling in more ways than one.

Art Department - Without You
An upbeat shuffling disco beat reminiscent of "Love Story" by Layo & Bushwacka wrong-foots you, and as the lead vocal comes in, a mournful slowed down lyric about mortally missing someone, you realise this is modern house's equivalent of The Visitors.

Brian Wilson - The Like In I Love You
Brian reimagines Gershwin very sweetly indeed.

Really sounds like something that was taped off the telly in 1986.
