super confusing that hes calling himself SL Jones though ... thats the name of a grind time rap gang dude!!

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Saturday, 16 October 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

also like fiend a lot and this is dope

Brick Frog! (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 16 October 2010 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

haha i was watching the BET thing last night but didn't see j0rdan's liveblog til just now. the funniest thing was their whole cutoff point was people who haven't been dropping albums earlier than '99, clearly engineered specifically to include Em and Wayne but not Jay or any other older cats.

someone explain to me why Wiz is better than Wale, to me they sound pretty similar and are annoying for a lot of the same reasons

underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

well wiz def raps in a less try hard manner & that laid back cool stoner vibe is maybe why he connects w/ a lot of younger folks

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

see he doesn't sound like that to me, he sounds like he's straining and pushing the words out and forcing dumb rhymes the same way as Wale. i mean are any of his euphemisms for getting high even clever or funny or is it all "oooh i'm high i'm in a plane get it get it"

underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

they dont rap alike at all??

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

wale sounds like hes trying really hard to be intricate & is way more bland, wiz's vocals are chill & laid back and distinctive if not particularly lyrically interesting. wiz also has consistent taste in beats & doesnt glom on to any sound or style that floats his way. and he has consistent subject matter that amounts to getting high, having money, sleeping with you girlfriend. also, saw him live, electric performer.

i mean, you dont need to ask us -- ask the actual-fanbase wiz has. obviously hes doing something wale isnt

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah Al, go ask wiz's cultural fanbase, members of which you clearly know and interact with everyday. Why would you even bother asking us?

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

'cultural fanbase'??

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

god forbid a music journalist do some music journalism (i know al was just asking in an armchair rhetorical way but obv i wasnt actually saying he needed to ask wiz's fanbase but that wiz's fanbase itself suggests maybe there is a major difference, as wale's entire career has been about struggling for a fanbase, but j0rdan is just being trolly iirc fwiw imo)

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

"hey kid, you like wiz khalifa? come over here"

S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

That said, I agree with deej. I think wiz has a personality that is very easyy to connect to -- he's affable and his subject matter fits the "character" -- I agree that wale is more bland, also his strengths -- I guess stuff like the Seinfeld tape -- is something that is highly likely to be fetishized by journalists than and not really something That I think is going to build a significant fanbase. I think wale was "born into" press coverage, whereas wiz, largely, forced it

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

Deej what the fuck are you talking about? I was mocking you for implying that shipley should go hunt down some wiz fans and pick their brains instead of posing the question to us, which is, you know, sort of the whole point of the board

anyways, in an effort to stop this before it gets flamier; here's a site that drops a shitton of mixed bag promo and leaked tracks on a daily basis. It's kind of like getting on thirty mailing lists except it's zipped, there's a bunch of popupads and it's quasilegal at best.

yeah see this is kinda what I was getting at to begin with -- Wale and Wiz have completely different images and fanbases and to a certain set of rap fan, including a lot of the people here, one is cool and one is totally lame, but to me they sound very similar and are mediocre in a lot of the same ways. but I guess instead of puncturing the conventional wisdom and questioning whether the lame Mark Ronsonite skinny jeans blog rapper and the tattooed weed smoking rapper are actually that different on an actual musical level yeah we can just circle back to oh the kids have spoken, 400 thousand twitter followers can't be wrong.

underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

part of it might be that they're both from places without a strong 'regional rap identity' and both imo have these kind of annoying flat accents that sound awkward compared to NYC or southern rappers -- it's not a problem with all rappers from this part of the country, Philly rappers have their own sound and accent, nobody besides me really listens to Baltimore rappers but the good ones have their own sound, but to me D.C. doesn't and I guess maybe Pittsburgh doesn't either.

underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

i ... dont think they have the same weaknesses? at all? are you really on some 'oooh skinny jeans' beanie sigel

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

'tattooed weed smoking rapper' -- wale, just like gucci mane & waka flocka flame!

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

on an actual musical level, the differences are really obvious? also wiz has made a handful of good songs & wale hasnt

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

musically, hes just more charismatic, which is the biggest difference imo. & makes up for wiz's biggest difficulties is that a bunch of his songs are really boring/bad/have lame beats & he doesnt have say currensy's lyrical depth to justify 1000 songs about how hes sleeping with & smoking up your girlfriend

but thats what makes a handful of his songs worthwhile ... as long as yr not bumping wiz long players its all good

j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 22:11 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, i dont think hes a bad or boring rapper on a song-by-song basis -- like that track w/ killa kyleon off 'kush & oj' is just good, his rapping is good, fits the beat, good song altogether -- not 'in spite' of his rapping, but his rap style just works there

wale just always sounds adrift and personality-free

i don't understand these 2 posts, can you at least phrase your lame zings in a way that isn't totally confusing? i was just saying the knock against Wale's image is that he's a typical 'skinny jeans' hipster rapper, where Wiz has a cooler or harder to mock image of just being a laid back weed smoker with tattoos.

underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Thursday, 21 October 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

I guess I'm questioning the "charismatic" thing -- I don't hear it, he sounds as blank and devoid of swag as Wale to me, they both just kinda talk their shit without saying anything funny or memorable imo.

underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Thursday, 21 October 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

like do Wiz fans like "Black And Yellow" or just kind of tolerate it? that shit is garbage.
