Here's a piece I wrote for io9.com about metal bands helping to expose the reptoid menace... http://io9.com/5664162/
Awesome! Also, pre-ascension-of-Icke, you've got Axegrinder's "Rise of the Serpent Men" LP and Dream Death's "The Elder Race."

I'll have to get you guys the lyrics I wrote to 1997 Witch Mountain song "A Power Greater." It's all about our Reptilian forefathers.

If Jamie is admittimg that readers of this thread should vote for the Celeste album in EOY then I can only agree. A brilliant record.

and yes I know it means "sons of hate" but you know what else it means? HATS BARN

I have been buying hats from the Hat Barns for over 15 years or more. I live in Maryland but I buy most of my hats from the Hat Barn. I always get compliments on the hats I purchases from this shop. I probably own about 40 hats from the Hat Barn. I just purchased three more hats last week. I have received several compliments this weekend on the black hat.

First time I looked I thought it said "HATE BARN" which you gotta admit would be almost as awesome.

BARNEY HAT will hopefully be dudes name.

If you like fast, shiny goth metal, I recommend the new UnSun album, Clinic for Dolls. UnSun is Mauser from Vader, with his wife Anna singing. Big and poppy and crunchy, somewhere between Nightwish and Paramore!
I'm also pretty much on board with the new Gnaw Their Tongues.
And yes, I did just listen to those two back to back.

Now I know there is no accounting for taste——sure. But is music all so subjective that you can’t even form a coherent opinion about it without being narrow-minded? That’s what people seem to be telling me. I listen to what is considered “music” these days, and my response is almost always the same. If it has any melodic quality at all, or even any rhythmic quality, it’s usually so painfully unmemorable that I could hear the record a thousand times over in a six-month period, and on the seventh month not be able to recall even one riff. Sure, I might remember that it sounded “kinda doomy” or “kinda thrashy” due to the guitar sound, vocal style (or the label its on!!), but chances are that’s the only thing I’ll be able to recall. And why is this? Because there’s no quality control, no demand for any specific content to the music other than its possession of some rudimentary, tertiary qualities of a pre-established and almost always played-out style of music from thirty years ago. That’s our template for success. As long as it sounds like “Stoner Rock”—-or the infinitely more respectable in the underground, yet equally insipid style “Doom Metal”, i.e. it has droning guitars, a slow tempo, and the monotone wailings of some guy who’s somehow convinced his friends he’s imitating Ozzy—-or “Retro Thrash”, i.e. it has a brittle, over-saturated guitar sound and some douchebag that sounds like he’s got balls even smaller that James Hetfield’s (if that’s even possible)—-or probably the worst of them all, “True Metal”, the unoriginality and cookie-cutter-ishness of which I won’t even attempt to describe.

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
Man is that guy from Slough Feg an elitist. Complain much? Plus he never mentions any bands he likes, just the kind of stuff he hates. I dont have time for that negative bullshit.
― Zeppelin to Howlin Wolf: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)
I think his next column is supposed to be more about bands he likes
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, he comes off like a real prick. And if you listen to his own records, he's in no position to complain about other people being derivative and unmemorable at all. The cult surrounding that band is totally baffling.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)
Scalzi comes across like so many other 40+ metal fans, as if he's totally given up on seeking out good new music. For a guy fronting one of the more exciting American metal bands today, that's rather ironic, not to mention depressing.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 15 October 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)
one of the more exciting American metal bands today
Sorry, must disagree. If you own the first two Iron Maiden albums, you don't need the new Slough Feg album.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)
Haven't heard the new Slough Feg yet, but I really don't get that particular comparison.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:40 (fifteen years ago)
How can a metal fan not like Slough Feg? They've had their inconsistencies (Hardworlder lost me for a bit there), but Deadmen, Ape Uprising, and the new one are as satisfying as traditional metal gets.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 15 October 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)
But that's precisely the point. He's bitching about there being nothing new, and his own band is as not-new as it gets. And frankly, I'm listening to The Animal Spirits as I type this, and it's doing very little for me. I'm on track six and can't remember what track one sounded like, and his - maybe "piratical" is the best word - vocal style is pretty unappealing.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:47 (fifteen years ago)
I do completely understand the larger point though, about "traditionalists" bitching about no good new music, but spend their time cranking out something highly derivative themselves.

How about the point he tried to make about no women in San Francisco having a nice ass.
― Zeppelin to Howlin Wolf: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Friday, 15 October 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)
Actually, I was just in San Francisco, and the dearth of hot chicks was pretty noticeable.

not letting go of Hats Barn yet
― drawl the whine (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 15 October 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)
I watched some of that Hats Barn clip, and it was pretty good. I feel like black metal bands should store their bottles of water offstage, though. They go to all the trouble of dressing up like demons and then pause to drink water like ordinary chumps - it breaks the illusion, like when death metal bands talk to the audience between songs in normal human voices before reverting to death metal voice for the lyrics. If you're gonna do something, do it all the way. If you need a drink, vanish offstage briefly so no one can see you and the illusion of your unholiness is preserved.

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 15 October 2010 23:20 (fifteen years ago)
For comparison, I just listened to UnSun's first album, The End of Life, from 2008, which I have a feeling I'd heard before but not thought that much of. The new one is much glossier and more enticing, and although "glossy and enticing" aren't universal goods in metal, gothic metal lends itself to them pretty well. On the new album they sound more like they've picked a thing and are trying to do it as well as it can be done.
― glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 16 October 2010 00:39 (fifteen years ago)
I'll check Le Kraken out, thanks. I assumed they were from France but they're actually from Montreal. Hopefully they unleash le fury.
― A. Begrand, Saturday, 16 October 2010 01:10 (fifteen years ago)
I believe they have a few albums out. Yeah, they're from Montreal. It was an enjoyable listen.

Finally got round to hearing new Kylesa (thanks in part to Neil K) and it's reassuringly satisfying.
I don't smoke grass but if I did I would smoke a lot of it over the next few weeks while listening to Black Masses by Electric Wizard and the new Kylesa on constant repeat.
