mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:20 (nineteen years ago) link

i could probably live with U2 if they were an instrumental band

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe/baby is overused, but I like it anyway. x to fact cuz: I'm kind of tempted to write a song only using famously unusual rhymes from other folks' songs.

Heidy-Ho (Heidy-Ho), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 01:52 (nineteen years ago) link

i never hear this much any more, but I used to hate hearing that fucking "world end/girlfriend" rhyme. it was all the rage for about a year.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 01:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I know a girl called elsa
She’s into alka seltzer
She sniffs it through a cane on a supersonic train

these are the some of the best lyrics in 90s rock.

also: love/ thinking of should be banned

I think there was a thread like this already. But I can't remember what it was called.

girl/whirl/curl

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 04:12 (nineteen years ago) link

'table' and 'able'. Never want to hear it again ever.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 04:35 (nineteen years ago) link

x-post: it was called fire/desire i think

Why must RAIN always fall on s songwriters' window PANE? Nobody else ever talks about a window pane except when it breaks and you need to ask for a replacement at a hardware store.

assseenontv (j22433), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 05:14 (nineteen years ago) link

morning/warning

just kidding, that one's awesome! especially if "warning" is preceded by "without" and "morning" is preceded by "boy have I got a boner this"

Huk-L, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 06:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Why must RAIN always fall on s songwriters' window PANE?

I'd be more impressed if they were talking about their window pain (i.e. "A loved one fell out of 2nd story window and died, I AM STILL HURT, MANG").

LOTION.

I submit that never in the history of music has anyone actually had anything to say about any kind of lotion. It is invariably just a cheap, lazy choice of rhyme.
Cool J gets a free pass on this one, but Lou Reed can go grow another mullet.

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Friday, 25 March 2005 02:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Ultra-clever rhymes are awful as well, especially when strain is showing - when it's clear that the whole verse was motivated by the rhyme scheme. i just got a promo kit from some indie fuxxor whose publicists are all "OMG [the kid] is so smart, check out this awesomely literate rhyme: 'I am young and I am lost / You respond to my riposte.'" Into the garbage the kit went, needless to say.

...young apprentice, scylla and charybidis
...knowledge, college
...flesh to alabaster, servant is your master
that motherfucker really pissed me off.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Friday, 25 March 2005 05:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Reason and season! Maybe not as overused as fire/desire, but almost invariably bad whenever it is used.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 25 March 2005 05:32 (nineteen years ago) link

sorrow / tomorrow.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 25 March 2005 05:34 (nineteen years ago) link

College/Knowledge, OTM.

Soy Latte/Double Shote
Pilates/Hotties/Bodies

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 25 March 2005 08:08 (nineteen years ago) link

PARTY / BACARDI TO THREAD

This is super classic for "The Jumpoff" alone!

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Friday, 25 March 2005 08:28 (nineteen years ago) link

"Baby, good love and protection,
Make me your selection".

Ga! Everytime this song comes up on the radio I get as far as the chorus only to change it just before this awful, awful line comes up.

lana, Friday, 25 March 2005 17:11 (nineteen years ago) link

It's gonna take an ocean/Of calamine lotion seems good to me.

Apricot/gavotte, obviously.

M People had some song that went:
"as a matter of fact/at the drop of a hat"

still makes me want to pull my teeth out.

Neil FC (Neil FC), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:56 (nineteen years ago) link

head/dead
friend/again
why/try/die/cry/sigh
true/blue/you
heart/apart/start
chimbley sweep/anything
