he's been harsh there imo but i need to think about it some more

r|t|c, Monday, 4 October 2010 17:47 (thirteen years ago) link

one play through and not much is sticking but then again first one took a few listens. shultz brought it on a few tracks tho

k3vin k., Tuesday, 5 October 2010 04:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Damn, I have been avoiding this thread for so long, but I had figured that jeremih birthday sex was some indie band.

kkvgz, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 09:23 (thirteen years ago) link

nothing relaly jumped out at me on first listen - no 'make up to break up' or 'birthday sex'. feels more like a long, really well produced EP than an album. kind of reminds me of lloyd's like me the young goldie in terms of just being a solid collection of songs where the production really suits the singer and vice versa.

wanted to turn it off when the 50 track came on though

the fact that terius inspires such great knock-offs kind of cements his awesomeness imo

The second half of that is O_O.

Terius should totally steal that trick from Jeremih.

wow what just happened? "waiter" was just kinda decent for me but "the 5 senses" is stunningly beautiful

i have to listen to this again

wakafledia (k3vin k.), Sunday, 31 October 2010 15:35 (thirteen years ago) link

alright loving this now, what was i listening to the first time i heard "take off" "waiter" and "love don't change"?

actually i remember digging the "take off" beat

"broken down" is like, hey ceelo this is how you do retro with some panache without being so damn obvious about it

wakafledia (k3vin k.), Sunday, 31 October 2010 19:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Album is GREAT. I agree with "like me" similarities in that he's going with what suits him the best throughout, gorgeous melodies, no stupid tricks that ruin the flow.

abcfsk, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 00:17 (thirteen years ago) link

god 'my sunshine' is just the most devastating song. you'd think his youthfulness would work against him on a song of such import, but actually it's what makes it: you just wouldn't want to ever wish this level of heartbreak on someone so young.

whiney trollins vs. hipsters (dayo), Sunday, 7 November 2010 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

nicely put, love that song

the new album is very good btw! R&b cru sleeping on this one

gotta really listen to this a bit and get into it; initial impression is that it's spectacular

this is a really nice album -- trey & ne-yo take Ls imo

"dawn on me" should be a hit, damn

i lol'd at "let's take 9 shots/ just call it 50"

thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 08:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess that would be "down on money" - more classic tagging

thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 08:57 (thirteen years ago) link

"take off" sounds like jesse mccartney to me, in a good way

thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 08:58 (thirteen years ago) link

"holding on" is really the only one i'm not fucking w/ cuz it's mad tedder

thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 09:15 (thirteen years ago) link

i love how he affects a real deep almost dancehall voice on "down on me"

thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 09:21 (thirteen years ago) link

"down on me" -> "waiter/5 senses" is a pretty much perfect stretch of r&b

more or less see this album as sorta like the awkward self-conscious teenage growing pained older brother to the exuberant little bubbleworld of the first. (by that i'm not saying the earlier record wasn't derivative, just that it was derivative in its own way; it's the difference between 'birthday sex' and 'sleepers', the stronger suggestion of jeremih speaking through other ppl's voices and seeing the stuff he does through other ppl's eyes.)

like i mentioned on the rolling thread though i'm not really into being overly critical of this album cos even on its least successful cuts i still think there's always something earcatching to enjoy, either on the production or vocal side, and yeah basically i remain fully supportive of these talented & (especially so in a barren r&b year like this) unusual dudes.

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:22 (thirteen years ago) link

by the by a couple of cuts on this (mainly the two after '5 senses', but in small doses elsewhere too) totally make me think jeremih should probably have a career on stage or in glee or something.

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:28 (thirteen years ago) link

agree the new thread is unnecessary btw, if it wasn't already clear.

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i think this compares pretty badly to the first album, actually - seems a lot of the arrangements are stripped further back, which makes jeremih's reedy voice stick out a lot more - it gets kinda one-note over the course of an album. and there aren't any standouts on the same level as "birthday sex"/"imma star"/"raindrops".

anyone heard this? nothing special or anything but a link for completist stans

sorta bummes at the lack of talk about his new one, which i thought was prety strong actually. he's someone for whom i'd check all his new shit

"All About You" is such a good album. The production is great and Jeremih himself seems to have a really likeable personality - romantic, sweet and sexual without seeming too sleazy or overly macho.

I had no idea his name was pronounced the way it is

it's with a long "I", right? he says it in a few of his songs and on his twitter he writes "my" as "mih"

i'm guessing most of you slept on this album
