And the new one is really cool, but I feel like the production is a little less clear than the last one. Kinda worried their next album will be their equivalent of Atheist's "Elements," though.

Listened to the new Hail of Bullets on my tram ride to work this morning. I still like them. Easy-listening death metal.

Nate Carson, Friday, 1 October 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

I heard something Adrien & Smithy might like today.

I told ya!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 3 October 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

should probably listen to this Enslaved record the whole way through, but I just keep playing the last track again and again and again

I like the record cover/logo/whatever that is

markers, Monday, 4 October 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

the logo looks like ass, if you lopped that off you'd have a pretty OK sleeve imho

Not sure if they've been mentioned in this thread yet but there's a new Place Of Skulls (Victor Griffin, ex-Pentagram) out just now and oh mayyyne... you know how before they were a Christian band who rocked, as opposed to a Christian rock band? This is actually a Christian rock record. I mean nothing with Victor Griffin playing guitar is going to be irredeemable but I think they're making an active play for the CCM crowd :(

hoxton whores ahoy (DJ Mencap), Monday, 4 October 2010 21:36 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno, the lyrics were always a bit like that.

Would also like to hear about this. What's on the DVD? Or is one of those pointless 'audio only' DVDs?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Monday, 4 October 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

xp yeah no I mean the actual songs, to be fair there are some bangers here but a bunch of this sounds like radio rock of the Creed kind, it's not pretty

hoxton whores ahoy (DJ Mencap), Monday, 4 October 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

ahh, ugh

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 07:04 (fifteen years ago)

So what are people thinking, end-of-year-list-wise? Here's what I have so far:

Nachtmystium - Black Mettle Part 2: Addicts
Yakuza - Of Seismic Consequence
Jucifer - Throned in Blood
Arsis - Starve for the Devil
The Sword - Warp Riders
Watain - Lawless Darkness
High on Fire - Snakes for the Divine
Zoroaster - Matador
Cathedral - the Guessing Game
Landmine Marathon - Sovereign Descent
Rotting Christ - AEALO

sounds like Dream Theater (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

Four or five of those have a shot a being on mine (Nachtmystium, Yakuza, Watain, High On Fire, and maaaaaybe Zoroaster). Didn't really feel the Arsis or The Sword that much, although the latter is growing on me a bit (I think I just had too high of expectations given the early buzz and the lovely cover art). The Cathedral is... well, interesting. LOVE about 3/5ths of it, can't stand another fifth, and waver back and forth on the rest.

The Landmine Marathon was also okay, but I haven't listened to it again since I heard the promo. Maybe I should remedy that. Haven't heard the others.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

Alpha order:

Black Bombaim - Saturdays and Space Travels
Cathedral - The Guessing Game
Christian Mistress - Agony & Opium
The Flight of Sleipnir - Lore
Ihsahn - After
Kvelertak - Kvelertak
Samsara Blues Experiment - Long Distance Trip
The Sword - Warp Riders
Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones
UFOmammut - Eve

I have yet to hear Gnaw Their Tongues and Kylesa, but wouldn't be surprised if either made my list.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah Triptykon would probably be on my list and I'm super excited to hear the Kylesa. Off the top of my head the Ihsahn record would probably make my list.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

I can't remember everything that came out, but off the top of my head I would put: Iron Maiden, Yakuza, Enslaved, Drudkh, Ov Hell, Sorgeldom, Twilight, 1349, Ludicra, and The Howling Wind on my list, and maybe Celestiial, and I have a feeling this Wolvserpent is gonna make it too. Oh yeah, and I bet Kylesa will, but I haven't heard it.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

I have a gift certificate, so I'm going to make a run to Best Buy and pick up a couple things I never got around to checking out (if they have them), including Ludicra because I suspect I'm going to love that one. Honestly, the Enslaved is good, but I'm not as blown away by it as everyone else here seems to be.

sounds like Dream Theater (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

Man your Best Buy must be a whole lot better than the ones around here if you can find Ludicra there. The only metal albums I was able to find this year were the Maiden, the High On Fire, and Ov Hell.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

My list of candidates is fuckin' LONG. Here 'tis:

The Absence, Enemy Unbound
Armored Saint, La Raza
Bison B.C., Dark Ages
Brain Drill, Quantum Catastrophe
Danzig, Deth Red Sabaoth
Decrepit Birth, Polarity
Defeatist, Sixth Extinction
Deftones, Diamond Eyes
Embryonic Devourment, Vivid Interpretations of the Void
Enforcer, Diamonds
Flesh Consumed, Ecliptic Dimensions of Suffering
High On Fire, Snakes for the Divine
Ihsahn, After
In This Moment, A Star-Crossed Wasteland
Inherit Disease, Visceral Transcendence
Iron Maiden, The Final Frontier
Kill the Client, Set for Extinction (just got the promo today, but it's awesome)
Knut, Wonder
Kylesa, Spiral Shadow
Ludicra, The Tenant
Misery Index, Heirs to Thievery
Ratt, Infestation
Shining, Blackjazz
The Showdown, Blood in the Gears
Steelwing, Lord of the Wasteland
The Sword, Warp Riders
Violator, Annihilation Process EP
Waking the Cadaver, Beyond Cops, Beyond God
Whourkr, Concrete (digi-grind)
Xasthur, Portal of Sorrow
Yakuza, Of Seismic Consequence
Rob Zombie, Hellbilly Deluxe 2

I'm not sure about the Triptykon disc yet (or the EP that's coming out soonish). I'm going to see them, 1349 and Yakuza tomorrow night, though. That may inspire me to revisit the studio recordings.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

They have it on the website, probably doesn't translate to having it in store though.

sounds like Dream Theater (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

I was not impressed by the Rob zombie at all. I really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't very good.

sounds like Dream Theater (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 03:04 (fifteen years ago)

I keep forgetting theres a new Brain Drill out! I need to check that one out, I loved first one.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 03:04 (fifteen years ago)

I totally forgot the Ludicra! Another to add to the list. Liked the Ratt a great deal and should probably revisit it.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 03:45 (fifteen years ago)

I think for me the top ten of it is going to be Maiden, Electric Wizard, Cathedral, The Body, Gnaw Their Tongues, High On Fire, Cephalic Carnage, Kylesa, UFOmammut, Celeste.

Duran (Doran), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

Electric Wizard

Wait, what?!?!?? Had no idea they had a new one coming out this year!

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

Waking the Cadaver, Beyond Cops, Beyond God

trollin?

my picks:
cathedral, the guessing game
immolation, majesty and decay
ihsahn, after
thou, summit
christian mistress, agony & opium
overkill, ironbound
iron maiden, the final fronteir
bastard noise / endless blockade, the red list (split)

like the new ones from arsis, decrepit birth, high on fire, and the bastard noise full-length as well. no doubt I'm forgetting some others.

tons of stuff I haven't checked out yet too. ludicra, defeatist, kill the client, and triptykon are near the top of that list.

original bgm, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a fair-weather metal fan and haven't heard a lot, but I have enjoyed Nachtmystium, High on Fire, Deftones, maybe a couple others... Boris? Maybe the BXI thing, or that Variations one.

I'm gonna mention ilxor in everyone of my posts until I get dn'd (ilxor), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck... I was trying not to go on about it... but it fucking rules. The last track's like a massive thunderstorm. And that's all I'm saying about it until ten days before release date...

Duran (Doran), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

You just upped my excitement level by like 10000000%.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

new electric wizard is always a good thing.

oh yeah, new agalloch should be out pretty soon!

original bgm, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

Forgot about the Thou, that one is pretty high up on my list. I haven't given my list much thought though, since I'm not writing for any outlets right now I'm not on the same October deadline as most of you guys.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:05 (fifteen years ago)

i'm expecting to enjoy a good amount of stuff that hasn't been released yet, but my only real keepers from the year so far are cathedral and ludicra, and to an extent i respect those more than i like them.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

Electric Wizard and Agalloch are high on my "excited for" list and will probably make it if they're anywhere near the last records from each band. Ended up being quite a year!

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:20 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously, it really did!

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

Oh wow. Where did you get those photos from?

Duran (Doran), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

Waking the Cadaver, Beyond Cops, Beyond God

trollin?

Nope. I wasn't expecting anything at all from it, 'cause they were seriously one of the most inept bands I'd ever heard. But somehow they got whipped into shape and while they're not pathbreaking or anything, it's a solid death/grind record.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

Seeing Triptykon here in Cambridge Thursday night. Looking forward!

2010 frontrunners for me, currently:

Cathedral
Celestiial
Dark Fortress
Diabulus in Musica
Ea
Eluveitie
Enslaved
HIM
Ihsahn
Immolation
Imperium Dekadenz
Iron Maiden
Kvelertak
Lacrimas Profundere
Ludicra
Mandrake
Nechochwen
Negura Bunget
Nevermore
Poisonblack
Rotting Christ
Sahg
Sister Sin
Triptykon
Valborg
Xasthur

And I'm still not ruling out Alcest, Blood of the Black Owl, Blut aus Nord, Dark Tranquillity, Decrepit Birth, Dimmu Borgir, Equilibrium, Gamma Ray, Grand Magus, Kathaarsys, Mortemia, Overkill, Tarja or 1349. And I haven't heard the new Cradle of Filth or Agalloch yet.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

Nope. I wasn't expecting anything at all from it, 'cause they were seriously one of the most inept bands I'd ever heard. But somehow they got whipped into shape and while they're not pathbreaking or anything, it's a solid death/grind record.

hmm. actually haven't heard it myself. just the older material, and yeah, inept is right.

in any case, the phrase "beyond cops, beyond god" is seriously funny to me for reasons I'm having trouble articulating.

original bgm, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

didn't even know there was a new blut aus nord record this year! memoria vetusta ii was my fave of 2009, so I have to hear that one.

original bgm, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

Enslaved and Agalloch will place very high on my 2010 list. Christian Mistress has crept up and up since June to the point where it's an easy top ten for me. The new ones by Weapon and the Crown are fantastic as well, a couple of potential late additions.

There's been a wealth of good metal records this year...

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

Dont forget Dawnbringer
