If you go to that place tonight, our friend Junior will be there along with his dad.

Don't know why I bother, but here's another invitation for you, Hurting. Come out one Monday to my neck of the woods and see my neighbor do his thing. He always has good players with him and the next two weeks he has an especially good bass player: http://www.jimhershman.com/gigs.html

Not to be a dick but I don't really think I'm going to come out to Queens to see jazz guitar, which I don't like, when I'm working the next morning.
― buju_stanton (Hurting 2), Monday, 11 October 2010 03:09 (fifteen years ago)
I mean the guy is good but it's very jazz-guitary jazz guitar.
I do like some of Russell Malone's work however.
― buju_stanton (Hurting 2), Monday, 11 October 2010 03:11 (fifteen years ago)
Russell himself himself has made the long, lonely trip out to Queens where he hung out and played at that very gig and then still had time to go back into the city to catch Ron Affif at the Zinc Bar. But then again he likes jazz guitar and probably didn't have to get up in the morning.
― roast rage against the hoosteen (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 11 October 2010 05:14 (fifteen years ago)
I used to dislike most jazz guitar as well, and I still don't always like to listen to recordings of it that much, but I figured that I live in a big city where there are lots of good players playing gigs in bars and restaurants with no cover, sometimes with bass and drums or singers and often even conveniently located in Manhattan so I figured I'd go out and check some of it out. If you can see Bucky Pizzarelli for the price of a beer, why not? Especially since he might bring his son John along or some other guitar player like Howard Alden is at the bar waiting to sit in. How do you know what the guitar tone of one of these guys is really like or how it fits in with a band until you have seen them live?

(Psst. If there is anybody reading this thread interested in actually seeing a real live Jazz GUITARist, instead of wondering why they all are so bad and hated, Gene Bertoncini will be playing tomorrow as part of the Jazz Brunch at the North Square off Washington Square Park, where they always seem to have good guitarists, and at Smalls on Monday.
You could also go this or any Sunday evening to Walker's to see Peter Leitch play as part of a duet, usually with a top of the line bass player.
Or you could wait until Tuesday and go to Jack Wilkins's regular gig that I mentioned upthread or you could stay home and... ah, never mind)

i was a big jazz guitar nerd in high school and i still will defend pat metheny's playing. ignoring everything that is PMG, i put on some of his albums i love recently (80/81, the holland/haynes trio, even the 2o00-era Trio stuff like the Trio Live album) and every single phrase came right back to me. so distincive

Really curious about this new record with the robo-orchestra. Sounded cool from what I heard in the EPK video.
I generally like some of his playing but he tends toward a sort of 'irrational exuberance' or something.

I enjoy Orchestrion. The title track is the most ambitious musically but it's all good if you like Metheny's style. My gf thinks much of it sounds like lounge music fwiw. I think the compositional craft and attention to orchestration distinguish it though.

Saw a picture of your guitar teacher in the Jimmy Heath autobio which I think I'm going to need to read. Although I probably will read Scott LaFaro bio first.

Too bad you missed it.
Looking through the Jimmy Heath book and I see that he briefly mentions Ted D as somebody he knew from Jazzmobile. He also appears in "Appendix A: Unique Names," which is an incredibly long list of nicknames assigned by the Heath Brothers to other musicians, as "Texas Ted."

I forgot that two people actually voted for Freddie Green. That's a great challops but in a way sort of right opinion to have.

Yeah, there's challops and then there's challops. I like reading the various articles on Freddie Green's comping style where they debate how many notes he actually played in a chord.

Ha, I think he still used virtually the same list when I was there. I kind of found it tedious, tbh. Also Freedom Jazz Dance is a real bitch to finger on guitar and I never quite found a good way.

― Everything You POLL Is RONG (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 03:05 (fourteen years ago)
I actually never quite understood his recommended practice routines. I mean "practicing" all of those tunes every day alone would take a few hours if you really did it. Then he'd have like three other books for you to practice out of, and you were supposed to do each thing in every key in every position on the fretboard, and it seemed like it would take 8 hours of FOCUSED practice to get through all that plus whatever was assigned for combos and improv classes and such. And I just did not have that kind of focus.
― the prurient pinterest (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 03:06 (fourteen years ago)
I know what you mean. Obviously you've gotta practice a lot and practice stuff on a regular basis, but to give people a giant list of stuff and say you've gotta practice this giant list every single day seems like it would be demoralizing to everybody but the most fanatical student. Which some might say is the point but still. Actually I saw the other guy for a few seconds this evening but didn't really talk to him. Next time I will ask whether he practiced all of that every single day.
― Everything You POLL Is RONG (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 03:18 (fourteen years ago)
Yes I would really like to know that. I think that was actually a big contributing factor in never getting further along in music was that demoralization.
