saying "Don't Speak" is better than, say, "Take a Bow" is unfunny challops.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think anyone did that.

The Reverend, Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:22 (fifteen years ago)

Stating it for the record. You all know where I live.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

it's probably "torn". imbruglia is so hot in that video. i like "don't speak" as well though, think it deserves a little credit

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

omg why does everyone like "don't speak" i feel like i'm taking crazy pills!

^^^^^^

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

don't speak has a catchy chorus, and I've always liked the poppy sensibilities of the guitar player on the song, especially during the 'heavier' (for lack of a better word) riffs.

u r no man, take the balls (San Te), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

I don't mind the arrangement so much as I do Stefani, who sings like a retarded kid to his dot matrix printer.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

Stefani's voice was always an acquired taste, but I grew to tolerate and even enjoy it a bit. Not that I was ever a No Doubt fan by any means. She was most grating on Spiderwebs.

u r no man, take the balls (San Te), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

I don't mind her voice so much on the more uptempo songs, but for me "Don't Speak" is just torture.

(¬_¬) (Nicole), Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

I still get mad thinking about Gwen getting uppity with Sanjaya when she was the mentor on American Idol, because she really had no room to talk as far a vocal skills go.

(¬_¬) (Nicole), Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

Don't Beak sucks but I prefer it to the friends theme & "Fly"

all the songs on this list are pretty weak imo

dayquil babies (crüt), Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

lol Don't Beak

dayquil babies (crüt), Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

I don't have any problem with her singing on "Don't Speak". ¯\(°_o)/¯

The Reverend, Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

me neither

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

lol Don't Beak

Power ballad at the end of that owl movie obv.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

yea Gwen's way more OTT on other No Doubt songs

u r no man, take the balls (San Te), Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

i really can't hear this gwen retardation you speak of either but anyway, the song's got a spanish guitar solo and that counts for something

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, I just realized "Lovefool" doesn't technically qualify for this poll, but I'm glad it's here.

The Reverend, Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

actually i'm pretty sure most of the songs on this poll did eventually chart on the hot 100, just not when they were peaking in popularity. "iris" still managed to crack the top 10, actually, b/c it was still pretty popular when the hot 100 was revised to allow airplay-only songs.

teledyldonix, Saturday, 25 September 2010 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

Lovefool over Torn.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Saturday, 25 September 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

loooooool don't beak

horseshoe, Saturday, 25 September 2010 22:35 (fifteen years ago)

The live version of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" got massive airplay the summer of '98.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 26 September 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

"fly," "love fool," "iris" ... then everything else.

hard to believe that anyone would have any love for "men in black" at all.

Ed Kranepool borrow Chico Escuela's soap and never give it back (Eisbaer), Sunday, 26 September 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

what's the song that men in black bites? i always heard it played over the p.a. at the gas station i used to work third shift at but i never figured out what it was...i suppose i could just wiki it

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 26 September 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Not."

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 26 September 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

*nots

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 26 September 2010 15:00 (fifteen years ago)

also does anyone else think that No Doubt pretty much sucks until Rock Steady? Maybe Return of Saturn is okay but the singles weren't all that great. Their best song imo is the Talk Talk cover (though I like Hella Good and Underneath It All a lot)

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 26 September 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

"Hella Good" is the only ND song I've ever chosen to listen to.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 26 September 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

Lots of people think this but they are kind of wrong

Monkeys? Um, no. (HI DERE), Sunday, 26 September 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

OTM OTM

Ed Kranepool borrow Chico Escuela's soap and never give it back (Eisbaer), Sunday, 26 September 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

yeah despite the convincing argument, I still think Tragic Kingdom is crud.

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 26 September 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

High points on Tragic Kingdom are my favorite No Doubt songs - "Spiderwebs" and "Sunday Morning" are great. The positive-message filler is kinda iffy though. I never heard Return of Saturn, but the singles borrrrrrrrrrrrred me except for "Bathwater."

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 26 September 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

spiderwebs is okaay in the Proust's madeleine sense, but it's not what i would consider a 'good song'.

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 26 September 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

i think the rock steady singles are all pretty bad actually, never really understood why people liked them. i honestly don't like no doubt very much but i really loved "simple kind of life" from the return of saturn.

teledyldonix, Sunday, 26 September 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

I don't have much to say about No Doubt, but there is no doubt that I would love a madeleine right now.

Euler, Sunday, 26 September 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

The funny thing about them is that even though I really didn't have much use for the singles on the last two albums, the idea of buying their singles collection is weirdly appealing to me. It just seems like it'd be a really pleasant thing to have around. Looks like it's got a re-release coming up, too.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 26 September 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

but anyway, the song's got a spanish guitar solo and that counts for something

did this really count for something in the 90s?

▲ just some triangles ▲ (crüt), Sunday, 26 September 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

There was a lot of flamenco-y sounds in late 90s R&B.

dociah t. azzahole (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 26 September 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

Fastball's 'The Way'
Fly had that forementioned Spanish guitar flourish that goes off the rails...

demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 26 September 2010 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

i cant vote for fly in good conscience b/c my sister was a sugar ray superfan all thru her hi school years and i had to listen to them effectively 24/7 (a fandom which culminated in a photo being mailed to her of mark mcgrath on a date with soleil moon frye???). "torn" wins out for me, im such a sucker for shirt-rending bummer-pop

gorf, Sunday, 26 September 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

love Hey Baby, like Hella Good, don't really care for any other No Doubt joints but don't mind most of them

also love Let Me Blow Ya Mind

had never even heard of Fly until this thread

Lovefool >>>>> Torn >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Don't Speak >>>>>>>> Men In Black >> Fly >>>>>>>> I'll Be There For You >>> Iris

Underground - Parking (2010) (sic), Monday, 27 September 2010 09:41 (fifteen years ago)

Torn >>>>> Iris > (don't need to hear the rest of them ever again but as long as we're all ranking them) > Don't Speak > Lovefool > Fly > Men In Black > Friends theme

I always had a soft spot for radio-friendly indie pop circa 1998 (Goo Goo Dolls, Semisonic, Matchbox 20), probably because I was spending too much time in bars and heard those bands' songs a million times.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 27 September 2010 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

Torn is great. I remember really liking it when it came out so I hunted down the Ednaswap version. One of thos2e cases of the cover being better than the original.

kkvgz, Monday, 27 September 2010 11:02 (fifteen years ago)

Don't Speak > Torn > Men In Black > Lovefool >>>>>>>>> Iris > I'll Be There For You. Don't think I've heard the Sugar Ray song.

Matt DC, Monday, 27 September 2010 11:34 (fifteen years ago)

A strange list, in that at least five of those were physical singles here in Europe, and also sold well.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 27 September 2010 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

"Don't Speak" and "Men In Black" topped the Norwegian charts, and Norwegian charts are based on sales alone, with no airplay factor.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 27 September 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

When she sings "That's what's going on," I think of it as a response to Marvin Gaye's question, 25 years later.

Excluding Skits and Such (Eazy), Monday, 27 September 2010 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

lol

▲ just some triangles ▲ (crüt), Monday, 27 September 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)

I really resented 'Don't Speak' at the time! the only other No Doubt song i'd heard was 'just a girl', which was fast and fun and poppy and female-sung and strong, and I was really excited about it -- and then the next song was a ballad and it was about a boy and it was just, ugh, total betrayal.
