it's probably "torn". imbruglia is so hot in that video. i like "don't speak" as well though, think it deserves a little credit

don't speak has a catchy chorus, and I've always liked the poppy sensibilities of the guitar player on the song, especially during the 'heavier' (for lack of a better word) riffs.

I don't mind the arrangement so much as I do Stefani, who sings like a retarded kid to his dot matrix printer.

Stefani's voice was always an acquired taste, but I grew to tolerate and even enjoy it a bit. Not that I was ever a No Doubt fan by any means. She was most grating on Spiderwebs.

I don't mind her voice so much on the more uptempo songs, but for me "Don't Speak" is just torture.

I still get mad thinking about Gwen getting uppity with Sanjaya when she was the mentor on American Idol, because she really had no room to talk as far a vocal skills go.

actually i'm pretty sure most of the songs on this poll did eventually chart on the hot 100, just not when they were peaking in popularity. "iris" still managed to crack the top 10, actually, b/c it was still pretty popular when the hot 100 was revised to allow airplay-only songs.

yeah despite the convincing argument, I still think Tragic Kingdom is crud.

High points on Tragic Kingdom are my favorite No Doubt songs - "Spiderwebs" and "Sunday Morning" are great. The positive-message filler is kinda iffy though. I never heard Return of Saturn, but the singles borrrrrrrrrrrrred me except for "Bathwater."

spiderwebs is okaay in the Proust's madeleine sense, but it's not what i would consider a 'good song'.

i think the rock steady singles are all pretty bad actually, never really understood why people liked them. i honestly don't like no doubt very much but i really loved "simple kind of life" from the return of saturn.

I don't have much to say about No Doubt, but there is no doubt that I would love a madeleine right now.

The funny thing about them is that even though I really didn't have much use for the singles on the last two albums, the idea of buying their singles collection is weirdly appealing to me. It just seems like it'd be a really pleasant thing to have around. Looks like it's got a re-release coming up, too.

I always had a soft spot for radio-friendly indie pop circa 1998 (Goo Goo Dolls, Semisonic, Matchbox 20), probably because I was spending too much time in bars and heard those bands' songs a million times.

Torn is great. I remember really liking it when it came out so I hunted down the Ednaswap version. One of thos2e cases of the cover being better than the original.

A strange list, in that at least five of those were physical singles here in Europe, and also sold well.

"Don't Speak" and "Men In Black" topped the Norwegian charts, and Norwegian charts are based on sales alone, with no airplay factor.

When she sings "That's what's going on," I think of it as a response to Marvin Gaye's question, 25 years later.

I really resented 'Don't Speak' at the time! the only other No Doubt song i'd heard was 'just a girl', which was fast and fun and poppy and female-sung and strong, and I was really excited about it -- and then the next song was a ballad and it was about a boy and it was just, ugh, total betrayal.
