for me it's torn >>>> don't speak >>>> iris = lovefool > men in black = fly >> what the hell is this other one
― dayo, Saturday, 25 September 2010 01:37 (fifteen years ago)
Gwen always sounds like a farm animal being slaughtered when she tries to do ballads. Torn and Lovefool are both great though.
Thank god someone shares my opinion on this! Her singing in "Don't Speak" has always sound hella whiny and irritating to me, I basically can't stand the song, but no one else I know seems to feel the same way. I like her upbeat songs just fine.

i remember seeing an interview w/the sugar ray guy on tv when this song came out. he said something like, "yeah we've been wanting to work with supercat for a long time." I mean, I also want to work with supercat.

^^^ agreed, i think about this every time i hear the song
― Doctor Casino, Saturday, 25 September 2010 03:04 (fifteen years ago)
The two best things about Fly, besides working with Supercat:
1) the way each chorus goes from the kind of drunken, tuneless "dudes who can't sing trying to sing" of the first "Iiiiiiii" to the really pretty, open, lovely "Iiiiiii"s that follow - I don't know if anybody put any thought into this at the time but it's neat, adds a lot of interest.
2) that last "ALL AROUND THE WOOOORLD" buried in the final choruses - - - this is my favorite hook in the song and it doesn't come around 'til the very end, so you always have something to look forward to.
The song takes me back to the Summer of '97, and by that I mean when I hear it, I imagine myself linking FortuneCities jpegs to the picture frames in my dojo on Active Worlds, a weird kinda graphical IRC thing that I'm amazed to find is still online. I wonder if my dojo is still there!
― Doctor Casino, Saturday, 25 September 2010 03:10 (fifteen years ago)
^^^yes!
also my other favorite thing is the funk-metal supercat bridge that would be super-overbearing if they did it the whole song but turns into this awesome tense, almost kinda heavy moment when you place it in the middle of a laidback song that sounds like margaritas
― The Reverend, Saturday, 25 September 2010 06:20 (fifteen years ago)
and the way it comes out of that is so unexpected! first with that filter supercat flemenco dissolve, then with that whisk and the live drums mixed to sound like to like a sampled breakbeat (is there any production that screams "90s!" more than this one? think not)
― The Reverend, Saturday, 25 September 2010 06:26 (fifteen years ago)
i almost want to poll supercat's interjections

the guitar hook is the most underrated thing about the song imo
― The Reverend, Saturday, 25 September 2010 06:29 (fifteen years ago)
^right, thoguh I'm not sure how Prince-ish it is, unless you're just talking about the guitar the dude is playing in the video maybe??? (you know what I am talking about?)
― demons a. real (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 25 September 2010 06:45 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, dude plays a http://www.edroman.com/guitars/other-images/cloudguitar.jpgin the video. nothin to do with the sound
― The Reverend, Saturday, 25 September 2010 06:51 (fifteen years ago)
btw, I love that basically every thread that even mentions "Fly" turns into me and the Reverend alternately going on about what a great song it is. OTM about the breezy return from the Supercat section, it's like a whole new song is starting up and it turns out to be a perfect one-minute pop song.
I really think there's a market for a thread that's just a tribute to 90s production flourishes, I started to suggest this on my "50 memorable songs of the late 90s" thread, I think when I was talking about "Hooch." Also on my Bicycle tribute thread that nobody else responded to. I think your simulated breakbeat might be edged out by "corny use of telephone filter on vocals."

I kinda like all these songs, but the only ones I love are "lovefool" and "iris". Voted "iris" because I don't want the world to see me cuz I don't think that they'd understand.

'don't speak' was a better madonna ballad than anything madonna was actually managing at the time

it came out like a year after "Take A Bow"!
― J@den S. (some dude), Saturday, 25 September 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)
I thought that was an actual J0rdan post for a second and got realllllly confused to see him suddenly taking the authoritative Madonna expert stance.
In the same moment I also felt great kinship for J0rdan because my real response was "Wait, the Rihanna song?!"

ugh, I don't know that I like most of these songs. I vote "Don't Speak" because that one I do like.
― Remedial Thug Motivation (San Te), Saturday, 25 September 2010 16:52 (fifteen years ago)
Iris should be destroyed. the most overwrought and un-Goo Goo Dolls moment in their history...
― Remedial Thug Motivation (San Te), Saturday, 25 September 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)
"don't speak" pretty much IS madonna's "you'll see" (which is a v.g. madonna ballad that was out at the same time)
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 25 September 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

oh shit! I'm confusing "Iris" with "Name"...
hahahahahahaha
really do love Name at any rate. altrock power ballad goodness.

OTM. Name was much better, contained Goo Goo Doll's signature quality songwriting, and an ear catching acoustic riff.
"Iris" should be damned not only for not sounding anything like GGD (at least, at THAT point), but helping to bring in the short-lived era of 'alternapop acts playing mediocre songs with unnecessary OTT patched-in strings'.
― Remedial Thug Motivation (San Te), Saturday, 25 September 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)
more like forged signature quality songwriting

― (¬_¬) (Nicole), Saturday, 25 September 2010 17:30 (fifteen years ago)
I think "Don't Speak" is actually a pretty okay song but it's just hard for me to hear it objectively after it being played in the "once every forty-five minutes" range for something like six months, during a time when I basically spent four hours a day listening to the radio while building Duke Nukem 3D levels or otherwise dicking around on the computer.
― Doctor Casino, Saturday, 25 September 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)
seriously
xp don't speak is actually a pretty dumb song
― horseshoe, Saturday, 25 September 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)
"torn" is pretty amazing. i didn't really think so at the time maybe because it was played so often, but now when i hear it i inexplicably get chills at that last "OHHH" right before it launches into the ending cathartic guitar line. and i now realize how much of an all-time classic it is.
― teledyldonix, Saturday, 25 September 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)
saying "Don't Speak" is better than, say, "Take a Bow" is unfunny challops.

it's probably "torn". imbruglia is so hot in that video. i like "don't speak" as well though, think it deserves a little credit

― raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)
don't speak has a catchy chorus, and I've always liked the poppy sensibilities of the guitar player on the song, especially during the 'heavier' (for lack of a better word) riffs.
― u r no man, take the balls (San Te), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)
I don't mind the arrangement so much as I do Stefani, who sings like a retarded kid to his dot matrix printer.
― raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)
Stefani's voice was always an acquired taste, but I grew to tolerate and even enjoy it a bit. Not that I was ever a No Doubt fan by any means. She was most grating on Spiderwebs.
― u r no man, take the balls (San Te), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:53 (fifteen years ago)
I don't mind her voice so much on the more uptempo songs, but for me "Don't Speak" is just torture.
― (¬_¬) (Nicole), Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)
I still get mad thinking about Gwen getting uppity with Sanjaya when she was the mentor on American Idol, because she really had no room to talk as far a vocal skills go.
