"the doorway" off of times of grace, that is. argh.

I never find Rolling Metal hard to follow, except when I go away for a couple days and dudes write 713 messages about whether it's hard to follow or not.
This. I've only been offline for a few days but I feel like I'm a month behind.
So what does everyone think of the new/old Soundgarden track/video?
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 23:15 (fifteen years ago)
The "new" Soundgarden song is okay. Don't much care for the video, just 'cause it has nothing to do with Soundgarden; it might as well be a fan-made YouTube thing where the song is synched to anime footage. I'm actually thinking I might buy the 2CD/1DVD version of this compilation, as it's a very well-chosen selection of songs.
Listening to the new Opeth 3CD live thing now. I haven't listened to Blackwater Park in a while, and hearing it performed live is reminding me why. There are some really nice passages, but some real draggy parts, too, and the songs don't stick in my head at all - they're pretty much the opposite of catchy. It's more like, "Wow, that's a cool riff" while it's happening, but then as soon as it's over, it's gone.

the new cathedral is.....................kind of fascinating
― "SEX" drought, 2 wisks (zorn_bond.mp3), Thursday, 23 September 2010 07:44 (fifteen years ago)
like the parts in "funeral of dreams" where dude is sing-talking over bass licks remind me of........bloc party?
Ha ha ha! I love the Cathedral album but I can sort of see why people have a problem with the vocals... my friend compared him to your drunk Scottish uncle at a wedding getting everyone to shut up so he could do a turn...
It more reminds me of something off a slightly psychedelic, weird British horror film from the late 60s or a film starring David McCallum or Leonard Nimoy or something.
I guess that's one reason why I really like them though... they're very English without being like Skrewdriver, Blur or Chas and Dave.

Top 5 of 2010 so far: Ludicra, Cathedral, Enslaved, Wolvserpent, Agalloch.
Great year for brave and progressive metal.
― Nate Carson, Thursday, 23 September 2010 09:31 (fifteen years ago)
only heard a couple tracks from the Cathedral. Sounded odd and good. Vocals reminded me of something Canterbury or krautrock, maybe? It was something very specific and I couldn't place it: Gong? Guru Guru?
SO who has thoughts on the Blind Guardian? Haven't really loved anything past Somewhere Far Beyond, but that poem was glorious and I'd give the thing a shot if more people dug it.
And really, any other modern power metal that's interesting would be nice to hear. The more NWoBHM/Manillia Road/Cirith Ungol sounding stuff is what I'm looking for, although I like lol Lost Horizon and the first Avantasia, so I'm not completely averse to that Euro sounding stuff. Love Hammers of Misfortune, too.
― sweet asbo (CharlieS), Thursday, 23 September 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)
Power-metalwise, I think Gamma Ray are my only 2010 endorsement, but I there's a DragonForce live album, so that's like extended eligibility for whatever's on it...
― glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 23 September 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)
Going to order that Realmbuilder album tomorrow. That looks like my kinda thing. Dawnbringer, too.
I have one Gamma Ray somewhere, a space themed one. Don't recall be all that into it, maybe it'll click for me some day.

Saw Katatonia tonight. Meh.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 24 September 2010 08:03 (fifteen years ago)
they put on a great show last time I saw them
― get off my lawn (rockapads), Friday, 24 September 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

Rammstein are playing Madison Square Garden six days before my birthday. Hell yes.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Friday, 24 September 2010 18:40 (fifteen years ago)
you guys keep mentioning Enslaved so I checked out "The Watcher" on YouTube and the clean singing in the chorus is SLAYING me -- if any of their other stuff is as good as this song, man
― markers, Friday, 24 September 2010 22:04 (fifteen years ago)
also, the clean guitar parts are \(^o^)/
― markers, Friday, 24 September 2010 22:05 (fifteen years ago)
I love the clean singing parts of Enslaved, but then I really, really don't like the other bits. Which I know is my loss, but such is life.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 24 September 2010 22:16 (fifteen years ago)
Enslaved is the best band in metal. Followed by Ludicra and YOB.
As for Katatonia -- it was ok. Made me feel like I ate 3 vanilla wafers and half a glass of skim milk.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 24 September 2010 23:35 (fifteen years ago)
And speaking of Ludicra:

― Nate Carson, Friday, 24 September 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)
from what I've heard of the new Enslaved their clean-to-snarly vocal thing is a lot less jarring than it was on Vertebrae.
― get off my lawn (rockapads), Friday, 24 September 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)
I guess I've never found it jarring to start with.
― Nate Carson, Saturday, 25 September 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)
I don't find it jarring myself, just every time it switches on I think, "Why? You had a good thing going!"
― EZ Snappin, Saturday, 25 September 2010 00:15 (fifteen years ago)
No matter how prog Enslaved get, they're still too black metal for me. I keep wanting to like them, but they never quite do it for me.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Saturday, 25 September 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)
I wish I had an intern to listen to the new Dimmu Borgir for me.
I've listened to it twice, and you haven't paid me, so is that close enough?
― glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 25 September 2010 01:47 (fifteen years ago)
I guess I need to hear Enslaved and Ludicra, huh?
I heard that last YOB album and it did absolutely nothing for me, I love doom/stoner stuff but it was just a shitty imitation.

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 25 September 2010 02:09 (fifteen years ago)
I love YOB, but on a song by song basis. I can't get through a whole album.
I love Enslaved, and I find the "jarring" clean/bm vocals on their last few albums to be a huge part of their charm.
― get off my lawn (rockapads), Saturday, 25 September 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)
I have to say YOB is consistently great, I can't think of song of theirs I don't like.
― Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Saturday, 25 September 2010 05:25 (fifteen years ago)
"song"
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Saturday, 25 September 2010 05:41 (fifteen years ago)
the band has songs dude
― bear, bear, bear, Saturday, 25 September 2010 06:07 (fifteen years ago)
obviously that was I typo and I meant "a song" -- not somehow suggesting they only had one song.
― Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Saturday, 25 September 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)
I am also in the dont get the big deal camp re: yob
― the great aussie ballkicking vids (jjjusten), Saturday, 25 September 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)
I really liked The Illusion of Motion, because that one had digestible songs that stuck with me, but The Unreal Never Lived didn't really grab me. Epic doom doesn't really do it for me, though -- I like the new Zoroaster Way more than their earlier, longer doom pieces.
― sounds like Dream Theater (J3ff T.), Saturday, 25 September 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)
The longer and doomier something is the more I tend to like it.
― Randolph Carter (Viceroy), Saturday, 25 September 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)
No one is putting a gun to your head to like YOB. Seeing them live could change your life though. NY Times agrees that they're one of the best bands in North America. You can refute that statement, but you can't take it away.

(See how ridiculous that argument becomes when a more obviously shitty band is substituted in?)

srsly. especially for metal bands. it's to YOB's credit that the NYT endorsement wasn't a hipster kiss of death, tbh

That Zoroaster is not bedding in for me at all.
― Duran (Doran), Sunday, 26 September 2010 22:09 (fifteen years ago)
Good album by Zoroaster, but it has a bit of a tough time matching the strength of the first track.
I've been away so long I've missed the Dimmu Borgir pre-release buzz...is it the trainwreck I've been expecting it to be?
I hope to hear the new Agalloch soon after I get back home...
― A. Begrand, Monday, 27 September 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)
really? i start the zoroaster on the second or third track and go from there
